I don't play anything other than paper magic (and only commander) so this has been a weird time.

My commander group has been playing over webcam. We quickly learned that playing theft decks was a bad idea.

It was pretty hilarious when someone realized the Praetor's Grasp he drew was impossible to use over webcam.

If you buy a booster box one should come with it as the box topper, but they don't show up in packs.

My first draft was very fun. I wasn't that interested in Ikoria for a while; the giant monsters and mutate didn't appeal to me. But I'm getting it a little more when I see it actually on Arena. But, to tell you the truth, I really just want to beat people down with aggressive Mardu decks.

I drafted a sick RW cycling deck, and I also got to use my first Companion with it, Jegantha the Wellspring. Its condition limits you to only having single mana symbols in your card, which was trivial to satisfy in my color pair, and I got a 5/5 for 5 that didn't cost a card every game. That's a really easy Companion to use if you get it.

I mean someone could just fan the deck out in front of his camera it would be a lot of work though and take some extra effort. He then has to direct the player to take the right card without looking at it by saying oh yeah grab that one right there and then maybe so no one over etc..

Obviously takes way more work than a typical face to face game though.

Just make everyone put their decks on Tappedout (or other deckbuilding site of your choice).

The Godzilla cards are alternate art versions of regular cards, you can get them by buying pack bundles with gems and/or for drafting Ikoria on Arena. Buying packs with gold does not give you them...

You can't get the regular versions of the cards in packs though, for instance Luminous Broodmoth is the normal version Mothra, Supersonic Queen is the special version.

I'm actually not sure how I feel about Ikoria because mutate is so weird in terms of interactions when mutated creatures change zones and other stuff...I feel like it creates a lot of situations in which I'm going to have to look up a ruling

It is an extremely tricky mechanic, especially in Commander pods when all sort of unexpected interactions will come about. I'm not completely confident with it myself.

On Arena the only way to get them right now is buy packs with gem bundles or buy the huge bundle of packs for actual $, or you get one right now for drafting the set.

Keep in mind they are just special versions of regular cards though even though the name is different they count as the same card. Luminous Broodmoth = Mothra, Supersonic Queen. Also you are just getting the style of the card meaning you still need the actual card to use it so if you get the Mothra style you still need Luminous Broodmoth to actually play it in a deck.

Did two drafts online last night and it was pretty fun. Super complicated set so it makes a lot of decisions quite tricky. Need to play more until I get used to it.

I know there was a Board 8 Hearthstone tournament one time, would anyone be interested in doing a Board 8 MTGA tournament?

Been on a hearthstone kick but I think I'm gonna re-download Arena and try some drafts. I haven't played much MTG at all since...I dunno, whatever that Return to Return to Ravnica was. The recent sets have all seemed sweet but Arena limited was so clunky and constructed so hard to get into that I havent kept up.

PAX is actually a pretty good place to jump into beginner events because everyone is there to have a good time and expects a lot of newcomers.

But the basics are to shuffle well and present the deck to your opponent to cut, take punctual turns and clearly communicate about what you're doing, and don't be afraid to call a judge if there's a problem.

I just had the best dumbest win in limited

Auspicious Starrix: whenever this creature mutates, exile cards from the top of your library until you exile X permanent cards, where X is the number of times this creature has mutated. Put those permanent cards into the battlefield.

Turn six I mutate one of those onto my Brushwagg, get a 2 drop creature
Turn seven, i mutate a second Starrix onto my Starrix, which gets me the top four permanents of my deck.
those four permanents included an 8/8 haste and trample creature and a 7/7 sandwurm

next turn I did like 20 damage all at once, it ruled

This is a fun set. Im still not totally sure I know what im doing, but it feels cool and different.

The Starrix is so good. I wasn't really sure about it the first time I drafted it but once I saw it in action I realized that it's so much value.

Yeah, starrix is what turns an interesting but ultimately manageable mutate opponent into something unmanageable

Mutate is inherently card disadvantage, but an engine like that fills that gap and then some

Just used a couple of free draft tokens on ikoria.

I gotta say, I might be full "vorthos" or maybe "timmy" now, because all power level concerns aside, I'm enjoying the feel of this set a lot.

I am bored to tears by "return to X" sets, and something about eldraine didn't feel very interesting to me- I guess it was because it was almost too on the nose of fantasy stereotypes.

We'll see how i feel after a while, but I haven't felt this positive since dominaria/ixalan

I suppose not an Ikoria deck, just something that would work for whatever tournament we have. Guess that'll probably depend on format though.

Frontrunner for most entertaining deck in the format: Titanoth Rex/Void Beckoner reanimator. Got the combo in my sealed.

Ive gotten a few drafts in of the set now and while I think its reasonably fun, Im of the opinion the set is a little too complex. Theres a lot of thinks to remember and I find myself forgetting what my own mutated creatures do half the time. I think Arena makes it barely manageable but I kinda think this set would be a logistical nightmare to play in paper.

I played 1 sealed and 2 drafts on arena so far and have a hard time wrapping my head around the format. My sealed deck did pkay off the strength of its bombs (the hellion that doubles damage from your odd-cmc sources is nuts) but both drafting and playing matches have been pretty awkward for me. My last round I drafted Primal Empathy and Ozalith and tried to build around it since it seemed really strong with the high density of counters in the set, but ended up pivoting into UR spells with no real payoff. My other draft ended up turning into a singleton Companion build with the otter, and that was fun! Got 4 or 5 wins with that.

Green seems really strong but everyone is playing it so it's kind of a trap. The fixing is kind of awkward too (making G more attractive) and I guess you're just supposed to play a bunch of cycling?

Primal Empathy looks quite strong, but I haven't seen the Ozolith be that good. I suppose if you had a bunch of Fertilids and Ivy Elementals?

I'm actually a bit lower on green than the other colors, but I still need some time for things to sink in. Everything seems very balanced though so it's probably just a matter of perspective.

Primal Empathy is very strong, Ive drafted the UG mutate deck a few times and had Empathy in most of them. Its been impressive.

The two times I went 7 wins in Draft so far have been with blue, green, black, with green being the primary colour. Once you get that mutate ball rolling it's hard to stop.

Also, for the tournament. How does a standard tournament with a Bo3 format sound? We'll just direct challenge our opponents and play for fun. If people are interested they can post their IDs and I'll throw together a bracket when we have enough players.
