-There are now over a 1.5 million cases worldwide with 88k deaths. About 30k deaths since the last topic was created on 4/3/2020 9:59:29 PM EST. Again about 35% of all deaths so far.
-The US now has over 425k cases with over 14.5k deaths. NY State now has about 150k with over 6.2k deaths. NYC alone has over 72k cases with around 3.2k deaths. New York State now has the most cases compared to any single country in the entire world.
-UK Prime Minister, Boris Johnson, ended up being admitted to the ICU because of the virus. Currently, it is said he has not been intubated and doesn't need a ventilator and is doing good.
-A CDC report stated that African Americans are "disproportionately affected" by the Coronavirus due to poor health conditions and comorbidity along with other poor minorities.
-The White House through Dr. Deborah Birx warned that the next two weeks were extremely crucial and to avoid going to grocery stores and pharmacies. She said This is the moment to not be going to the grocery store, not going to the pharmacy, but doing everything you can to keep your family and your friends safe.

-On an unrelated note, one of the last remaining Democratic nominees for the president, Bernie Sanders, dropped out of the race, leaving the 2020 US presidential election to Joe Biden vs Donald Trump. Very big loss imo.

I wrote off the Covid 19 at first like so many. The reports that the symptoms can be minor, similar to a bad cold or flu. I like so many thought it was no big deal. But a few things about it bothered me in the back of my mind and I remember telling my wife about it because its human nature to downplay things to avoid panic.

1: its new. Yes its new, and we didnt know what it was doing to the body besides symptoms.

2: Theres no cure. And I remember when I mentioned this point early on people would counter with well the common cold and flu do not have cures either.

Now what we do know is frightening.

3: It attacks the lungs and once it does there aint no turning back. I feel like once you get the Coronavirus your body either fights it off or your fucked. Its the luck of the draw. If you get put on a ventilator your chances of coming off of it are slim. This is scary.

4: Its highly contagious.

I have a history of asthma as a child, I know what bronchitis feels like and if there were no antibiotics to cure me I shudder to think what would happen to me at that time. So I think to myself that Covid 19 is like bronchitis without the ability to be cured with antibiotics and that is a scary as fuck thought. It makes me want to stay underground isolated for years until there is a proven vaccine

edit: seems oregon is closing down all schools for the rest of the year due to corona. seniors with passing grades will graduate. no word yet on a graduation celebration (depends how the outbreak continues).

She also extended the ban on eating in restaurants. 4th of July fireworks in Vancouver has been cancelled as wel.

Oregon with 1,239 cases and 38 deaths and scheduled to peak by the 21st. Not as bad as they first projected. Only thing that can screw it up is warm weather and that's what we have the next couple of days.

Vancouver is also a city in Washington state

Canada approved the visa for my wife (in less than 48 hours). They are now organizing flights for us. There is a flight to Bangkok tomorrow around noon. We will go there and the embassy will put us up in a hotel for 1 or 2 nights. Once they get us a flight we will be on our way home.

Detroit hospital workers say people are dying in the ER hallways before help can arrive

A Detroit hospital has been so overwhelmed by the influx of Covid-19 patients that at least 2 people have died in its emergency room hallways before help can arrive, health care workers there told CNN.

Patients at Sinai-Grace aren't just two-to-a-room -- they have been lining many of the hallways in the emergency room, according to the four health care workers. Two workers said critically ill patients, including ventilated patients, have been at times kept in the hallways.

At least two patients in the ER have died in hallway beds, according to a physician at the facility. Health care workers at the hospital, including the physician, spoke to CNN on the condition of anonymity out of concern for their jobs.

"We've had patients die in hallway beds because the nurse didn't find they didn't have a pulse until it was too late," the physician said. "Each nurse has so many patients that by the time they come to check on their next one, there is a chance that patient may not have a pulse anymore."

Another patient's breathing tube disconnected from the ventilator, and the patient died before staff could respond, two ER workers told CNN.

Workers at Sinai-Grace, though, said that with the increase in patients, the hospital at times hasn't had enough of the cardiac monitors that sound an alarm when a patient's vital signs change, according to three of the health care workers.

Staff members have also had to make hard decisions about who even gets monitors.
"We've done our best with monitors," one ER worker said. "But we have patients that we know are going to pass so we take them off a monitor and give [it] to someone else that needs [it]."

According to that worker, one patient without a monitor died in the ER hallway. The patient was showing signs of rigor mortis by the time staff members were aware that the patient had died.

Even if a patient is on a monitor and alarms begin to go off, staff isn't always able to respond in time, two ER employees said.

In at least two instances, even though monitor alarms had gone off, the hospital was so busy that by the time nurses were able to get there, the patients had died, the ER employees said.

"(The nurses) walked up to them and they had no pulses," one ER worker said. "They were on the monitor, but it was too much to watch everyone safely."

For patients, specifically elderly ones with high risk factors for Covid-19, two ER workers told CNN that staff at Sinai-Grace are calling the families of elderly patients and, "encouraging them to make patient DNR (do-not-resuscitate)/DNI (do-not-intubate)."

"Walking through is an eerie feeling," the EMT said. "Nurses, physicians and respiratory therapists running around, everyone is on a vent, every vent is beeping, patients are on multiple IV drips. You would've thought it was a military hospital in a war zone."

Not trying to complain. Just acknowledging the reality of the situation. Certainly, I am in a better situation than many and I am thankful for that.

I need to joke around a bit while following news that is awful. I've been trying to distract myself and not follow the news (and these topics) so closely, but it is a difficult battle to fight.
