Flight to Bangkok booked. Already booked a hotel near the airport. Now it's just to get the flight booked to Canada. Looking at the 12th or 14th right now. Have to go to Bangkok tomorrow though because it's the last possible flight. They are closing the airport in my city after tomorrow.

Not trying to complain. Just acknowledging the reality of the situation. Certainly, I am in a better situation than many and I am thankful for that.

I need to joke around a bit while following news that is awful. I've been trying to distract myself and not follow the news (and these topics) so closely, but it is a difficult battle to fight.

It's best to ignore fake news anyways, it's been proven to cause cancer.

A Detroit hospital has been so overwhelmed by the influx of Covid-19 patients that at least 2 people have died in its emergency room hallways before help can arrive, health care workers there told CNN.

Patients at Sinai-Grace aren't just two-to-a-room -- they have been lining many of the hallways in the emergency room, according to the four health care workers. Two workers said critically ill patients, including ventilated patients, have been at times kept in the hallways.

At least two patients in the ER have died in hallway beds, according to a physician at the facility. Health care workers at the hospital, including the physician, spoke to CNN on the condition of anonymity out of concern for their jobs.

"We've had patients die in hallway beds because the nurse didn't find they didn't have a pulse until it was too late," the physician said. "Each nurse has so many patients that by the time they come to check on their next one, there is a chance that patient may not have a pulse anymore."

Another patient's breathing tube disconnected from the ventilator, and the patient died before staff could respond, two ER workers told CNN.

Workers at Sinai-Grace, though, said that with the increase in patients, the hospital at times hasn't had enough of the cardiac monitors that sound an alarm when a patient's vital signs change, according to three of the health care workers.

Staff members have also had to make hard decisions about who even gets monitors.
"We've done our best with monitors," one ER worker said. "But we have patients that we know are going to pass so we take them off a monitor and give [it] to someone else that needs [it]."

According to that worker, one patient without a monitor died in the ER hallway. The patient was showing signs of rigor mortis by the time staff members were aware that the patient had died.

Even if a patient is on a monitor and alarms begin to go off, staff isn't always able to respond in time, two ER employees said.

In at least two instances, even though monitor alarms had gone off, the hospital was so busy that by the time nurses were able to get there, the patients had died, the ER employees said.

"(The nurses) walked up to them and they had no pulses," one ER worker said. "They were on the monitor, but it was too much to watch everyone safely."

For patients, specifically elderly ones with high risk factors for Covid-19, two ER workers told CNN that staff at Sinai-Grace are calling the families of elderly patients and, "encouraging them to make patient DNR (do-not-resuscitate)/DNI (do-not-intubate)."

"Walking through is an eerie feeling," the EMT said. "Nurses, physicians and respiratory therapists running around, everyone is on a vent, every vent is beeping, patients are on multiple IV drips. You would've thought it was a military hospital in a war zone."

Is Michigan in such bad shape because the governor's supplies were preempted by the federal government? Or is there some other reason?

Yes the decision to discipline the night shift was a bad call but would it have come to this so soon if Michigan got its supplies as ordered? Michigan may only be third in number of cases but Michigan is overwhelmed, long since overwhelmed. Maybe Michigan should apply to WHO for help?

There is a lot I want to argue about in the page linked to above. Let me keep it simple. China is in the process of easing lockdowns. Let's wait until we see easing the lockdowns working before we do it? Correct me if I am wrong but paying everyone to stay home costs less than repairing the damage of easing the restrictions. The difference between the two courses of actions is that paying everyone to stay home gives the money to small fry and repairing the damage caused by easing restrictions gives the money to the big players.

So say everyone listens and we quarantine for 2 months, social distancing etc everything works. Everyone either gets the virus and goes through it whatever the outcome or just doesn't get it. Either way, virus is out of hosts. So we open back up and resume business as usual.

Why is there concern about multiple waves? Can the virus 'hibernate' and go without hosts? Seems to me that once it's gone, it's gone. Are we concerned with whatever animal gave it in the first place re-releasing it?

I'm just trying to grasp the logic behind the idea of the virus going away and coming back again. I'm clearly missing something here.

We'll be done with the Wuhan flu in a couple weeks. Excellent.

Scientist are still learning about this. This article from a couple days ago explains why we might need a vaccine for things to return to normal. The new study, published in the Emerging Infectious Diseases journal, shifts the R0 for COVID-19 from about 2.2 to about 5.7. With the lower number, only 55% of a population needs to be immune from COVID-19 to stop its spread through herd immunity. Herd immunity refers to enough of a population being immune to a disease that the disease cannot travel through it.
