Correct me if Im wrong, but if hospitalization rates are lowering does that mean we havent hit the peak death rate yet? Dont peak deaths tend to lag after peak hospitalization rates?

I definitely think lives come first and we have to lock down as long as necessary, but I am getting pretty worried about the economy. I work in healthcare so I think I'll be ok personally (at least financially), but I'm worried about my favorite restaurants, bars, coffee shops, etc having to shut down permanantly.

The last week I've sort of ignored media and updates about Corona. It was my daughters bday and then Easter, my wife is due soon, and have stuff going on with my work coming up as I've been off a couple weeks. I've been trying to enjoy time with the family while not stressing about everything.

In a short summary, where are we with COVID-19 in general? Looking up general info it's hard to process the numbers in comparison to a couple weeks ago. Are all the shutdowns helping keep it down and cases/deaths plateauing? Is it looking like we might start to trickle off by June/July?

I know things won't get back to the way they were anytime soon, but if I'm put in a position to return to work it might make me feel a bit better if that could happen in say June without feeling like I'll be at a high risk for my newborn...or should I be looking at temporarily moving out or taking unpaid leave?

The infection, and death rates are going back and forth. Nothing is consistent long enough to give a 100% answer on, maybe except for South Korea, and that's a maybe. I'll give it till August. But we don't know if it will happen again in fall, and winter. Which is why a vaccine is needed asap.

As for your last question, wait and see. You have eyes and a brain. Look at the numbers reported, look in your area and see what's going on there, then you make that decision.

Well, it's not that I can't see what's going on and make a decision, but it's clearly not that simple. The easiest thing to do would be to take time off, of course that's what I would like to do if there is even a low risk. Unfortunately, giving up thousands is hard to do for most people supporting a family when it would be voluntary (my company is removing all PTO soon so it's either work or take leave). Just looking for perspective, and numbers are clearly misleading. In my area there have been only a few deaths with a couple hundred cases, yet a populated area not far from me has the top 5 cases in the U.S. Does that make me feel better we're keeping numbers down...I'd like to say yes, but when one person comes over from another area with it, could give it to me and I unknowingly cause harm to a family member, at that point it'd be impossible to think I made the right call. Yet, I could possibly return to work now and never get it. It's a shitty dilemma.

Well yeah, what you said last in that paragraph is exactly why you should decide on your own. If bunch of ppl online said it was ok, and you went to work, and got sick, who's to blame? Not them. It's all on you. Decide on your own. Sorry, I know you're trying to find some relief, but that's how it is.

I'm not saying I'm going to take anyone's advice in regards to what's ok or not. I was just looking for perspective on where things have gone in the last week or so in comparison to the overall expectations/timeline. Is it worse than people thought, are methods effective, or do we not really have a good way to tell? Even this topic it's hard to tell from the stats, 35% of deaths in the last week sounds terrible, but it still seems lower than sounded like the "peak" different media was talking about just a couple weeks ago and bracing for the worst. If that starts going down in the next week or two, I can picture my company treating it likes it's over with. Some of my supervisors voluntarily worked in a busy location while our location was shutdown, even though the company offered full pay and bonuses for the month of April. So of course I'm feeling that pressure and if I take a leave, I'd like to think my job would be waiting for me in a month or two, but there's no certainty.

I've been following this very closely for over a month and it is still hard to tell. There just are no clear answers.

We MAY be starting to see the curve flatten in areas hit first like NYC, but optimism there should be cautious.

I believe areas like Detroit, Philadelphia, and New Orleans are supposed to get pretty bad over the next couple weeks or so. There are other cities not far behind.

I will say that I've been on leave from work for a month now and I don't think I will feel safe returning anytime soon and I don't have a family to worry about spreading it to. I also live near a large urban area that has handled things pretty well. Probably one of the best areas of the country in terms of the outbreak.

Nobody knows. You're just hoping someone will say what you like to hear, but nobody knows how this will go, or how long it will last man. If I were in your position, I'd still goto work, but would sleep in the car to decrease the risk of spread to my new born, and my recovering wife, and do my laundry at the laundry mat. But would you, or can you do it?

In any circumstance, I cant see the country re-opening May 1st. Not until Italy opens back up at least and we see how they fair shortly after.

His announcement was that he is cooperating with the other East Coast Blue States and they're looking at the data on when to ease into loosening restrictions. He said they're not rushing to open and that the health and safety of the citizens takes priority over the economy. The Governors also called out Trump's bullshit on rushing to open and made it clear that the PotUS has no authority and the final decision is the Governors.

Yep. People claiming Cuomo talked about opening the States back up are lying/exaggerating. All he said was that they were looking at the data and that public health takes priority over the economy so no one was going to be rushing to open up. Much to fat fuck's dismay we're still looking at weeks of shutdowns.

https://www.pix11.com/news/coronavirus/task-force-to-design-plan-to-reopen-schools-business-in-ny-nj-ct-and-nearby-states
NEW YORK A multi-state task force will design a plan to reopen schools and businesses in New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Pennsylvania, Delaware and Rhode Island amid the coronavirus outbreak, Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced on Monday.

"We started this journey together, we're going to end it together," Cuomo said.

The governor made the announcement along with New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy and Connecticut Gov. Ned Lamont as well as Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Wolf, Delaware Gov. John Carney and Rhode Island Gov. Gina Raimondo.

Cuomo suggested the panel could establish a regionwide strategy and states would then be responsible for setting up and enacting individual timelines, but he added the task force will be responsible for recommending such a plan.

An uncoordinated approach to reopening states' local economies could have "inadvertent, unintended" consequences, Murphy said. "If you jam it too early, you could throw gasoline on the fire and reignite the fire."

A regionwide approach to restarting the economy made even more sense, Lamont added, given the major transportation corridors that run through each state, noting coronavirus outbreaks along the Metro-North Railroad corridor.

"It's the commuter corridor for us, but it's also the COVID corridor," he said.

Lamont called for a shared database and matching protocols, and expressed an interest in coordinating with the federal government.

The 18-person task force, which will include three representatives from each state, is expected to begin working on the plan Tuesday. Cuomo said they do not have a timeline and emphasized the governors expect a "smart plan" not a "political plan."

June 10th is an asinine date and has accellerated the economic fallout. Dozens of businesses just in my neighborhood alone which were employing people trying to ride it out have closed up shop because eating rent and wages and other expenses for 2 and a half months is just stupid. I'm talking entire stripmalls just gone in a week after he said that.
