Board 8 > Why does this community get so butthurt when LOZ/FF7 doesn t win?

The purpose of these contests is to drive new traffic to GFAQs. This is how the prizes are funded: more traffic = more ad clicks = more money for prizes, and the admins obviously hope some of these visitors stay & become long term members. Every contest rules page even explicitly states that outside groups may influence the outcome.

Yet every time when an outsider rally produces a winner that is not associated with LOZ or FF7, this community freaks out and punishes that winner in the next contest, in the most petty way possible. Draven and Undertale I could understand, but even L-Block, from an uncontroversial megahit game, lost to pikachu in the following contest.

What exactly is the fun of having LOZ and FF7 win every single contest? Everyone already knows this site has massive fanatical obsessions with those two IPs, and simply reaffirming that every single year wont change the opinions of the gaming majority outside this echo chamber. Theres a reason only one Nintendo game has won any substantial share of GOTY awards in the last 15+ years (gotypicks.blogspot.com).

L block wasn't hated, it didnt win again because it was a joke. a non character in a character battle, for all intents and purposes it shouldn't be allowed. so it was funny to people

jokes lose their luster after they're told once.(to the same crowd).

also according to your "gaming majority", Zelda IS the best game of the decade anyways. metacritic recently compiled best of decade lists made across all gaming media and Breath of the wild won by a landslide.

It's not that we WANT LoZ/FF7 to win. It's WHY they lose. It's happening not because of what Gamefaqs, or even gamers (not really) think is the best but because some tumblr/reddit forum decided to mess with things to get a FotM game/character to win.

Like, imagine you decided to poll your local area as to what the 'best game' of all time was. You might think game X is the best, but game Y has some serious pros and cons. Games A, B, and C were also popular but you don't think they really stand a chance. So you set up your polling booth and wait. Times goes by and people come by to vote. As expected X and Y are in the lead with A, B, and C trailing. Then, suddenly, game D pops up. Game D only came out a few weeks ago and, while it has its merits, it's got problems and issues to and is simply REALLY new. Okay. No surprise people would vote for a new game that's good, right? Except people keep voting for game D. More and more until it wins.

This leaves you baffled. You do some research and find out that game D has a local fanclub who decided to go down to the supermarket and pay people a buck to vote for D as well as reach out to their various groups to rally votes. While they technically didn't cheat their meddling means that, instead of getting an opinion of what gamers and the common man think is the best game, you just got THEIR opinion.

And it shows. Because next year you do the poll again. X and Y are in the lead again with A, B, and C following and D isn't even freaking mentioned. Because after it's fifteen minutes of fame were up no one cared anymore. But then you notice game E starting to rise up and it's the exact same story. The exact club may be different, but they're doing the exact same thing. Maybe a different market, maybe it's brownies instead of money, but it's the same story in the end. Game E wins and you just KNOW that, next year, game F will win and E won't even be a memory if you don't do something to stop this meddling.

Of course, when you finally DO develop a solution, games X and Y dominate because, shockingly, they were good games people remembered and kept playing well after they were 'new' because they were high quality and memorable while D, E, and F, while decent, were simply flash-in-the-pan titles if even that.

The correct concensus opinion on GameFAQs is that the gaming world peaked c.1998, with a strong tail into the early 2000s. We would prefer that nothing changed since then, and reaffirm that preference through contests.

The last time anything related to Final Fantasy won in a contest was in 2005. Its sad really.

Gee, we sure are angry that FF7 isn't going to be able to win game of the decade and all. Maybe in 2030 after the remake is released, though.
