Situations like this COVID-19 fiasco is the main reason why the Democrats in the 1930s created SOCIAL SAFETY NET PROGRAMS known back then as the New Deal because they had witnessed the devastation of the effects of the Great Depression on working-class Americans who did not have loads of money to hold them until things got better and most of them lost their jobs, their homes and their farms.

In the past 50 plus years or so, a certain political party has demonized those very programs as either being "Entitlements" or as being taken advantage of by "Freeloaders."

I'm willing to bet those people who'll receive a stimulus check are thankful that they at least have a cushion to soften the financial blow during this time.

They literally are and always have been entitlements and the fact that a lot of people receive benefits without ever working has been a point of contention since the first day it happened. And a lot of people ARE freeloaders, also not a point of contention.

It doesn't matter about being a 1% or not when you are living in a 1mil home driving a bens asking for more money from the poor to finance you looking out for them. This always drives me crazy. They've turned "entitlements" into a bad word. You've paid into the system, so you are ENTITLED to receive the benefits. Why is this now a bad thing?

...for starters, many people don't pay a damn dime into the system and, for closers, most people receive more from the system than they put in. One of the earliest social security recipient got a thousand times what she paid in. Most people who hit it big in Vegas don't even have that kind of a return.

So stop with your #fakenews narrative.

You would basically need a complete and total peice of shit like Rand Paul to be president for this to not get done, even with a sack of shit like him it would probably get veto overridden because of how necessary it is.

I cant speak for the politicians themselves but regular people I know that are republican dont care these safety nets exist they just hate people abusing it. They tend to use a saying "they are called safety nets not safety hammocks"

That's US Taxpayer money not Trump's and if you pay taxes the Government should help people until this COVID-19 situation is under control and we can get back to work.

Most working-class hourly paid people in America are one catastrophic event away from losing everything they have which is why FDR back in the 1930s created the New Deal safety net programs in case of economic downturns. Americans were suffering during the Great Depression economically and people were losing their jobs, homes, farms etc because they had nowhere to turn for assistance and FDR witnessed that and decided upon becoming president that he would create programs using tax dollars to bridge the gap.

For the past 60 or so years, the GOP has done everything in their power with great success I might add, to cripple those programs that sustain the Middle Class by attacking people as freeloaders and lazy if they applied for Unemployment Benefits during job loss etc through no fault of their own and this country fell in line and embraced that GOP ideology and now with the COVID-19 situation, people at least have a piece of mind knowing those stimulus checks are coming to those of us idled from work because of it and none of them are calling it a handout or freeloaders or lazy etc.

People have enough to deal with worrying about staying healthy and COVID-19 free and certainly don't need the added burden of worrying about paying their bills etc.

America has been built on socialist ideals since the mid 20th century. That's what spawned the middle class and home ownership because prior to FDR's New Deal, none of that existed because working people couldn't get loans due to high rates of default so banks just wouldn't do it until the New Deal and FHA home loans which guaranteed loans against default using tax money.

The irony here being, no one whined about social programs etc until non-Whites began accessing programs that were nowhere near as generous as ones that came before which put the opportunity to gain at some people's fingertips. if you could buy home that put wealth in your hands even if you did not come from money.

Later on the G.I. Bill made it possible for millions of Americans to attend college at a time when many lower class Americans simply didn't see college as an option for them until the G.I. Bill.

Not yet, actually. I haven't been able to apply for regular EI because I'm 120 hours shy of the required amount (need 700 in the past year, I'm only at 580 because school), and the system for applying for and dispensing the emergency fund (which I'll hopefully be eligible for, since it sounds like it's less restrictive than regular EI) isn't going to be going up until early next month. I'll hopefully be seeing it soon, but thankfully I'm in no rush because I've got enough in my account to last at least the next month or so without working.
