And most Americans either are working from home or getting unemployment. So we are in fact paying quite a few people to stay home and not work right now. Seems a hell of a lot better than slavery.

Don't simplify it quite like this. The government needs a plan for those of us in employment limbo. We technically have jobs but have no hourly work to report to.

They just approved a trillion dollars in aid. And the restrictions on unemployment have been temporarily changed by most states, so many of those people are eligible now. It's not perfect, but this is an unprecedentedly deadly disease that the current administration hampered our capability to respond to. That doesn't mean the answer is to do nothing.

This is a weird topic for me to be in because my argument isn't "corona virus is prb fine" its more "corona virus will be a huge devestation but not as big as losing an entire economy over night"

As it stands, America is chopping off its head to save it's dick. Its a tough choice for sure, and its hard to stomach either, but one is clearly better than the other

pretty much, from what i can tell. bars and restaurants are closed and everyone is working from home.

But yeah I think people in other countries or from middle class backgrounds in America often don't realize how thin the social safety net is in America. People think people are stupid for borrowing money at 500% interest. No, they aren't stupid. It's a choice between paying exorbitant interest or literally starving.

Humans are generally ok with trading other human lives for convenience as long as they aren't reminded about it. If this were not the case, all sorts of everyday things would be banned.

The virus has something like a 1% mortality rate with treatment, and probably more like 3-5% without treatment (which would be the relevant number for the vast majority of people if most of the country got it because we'd overwhelm the hospital system, which would also pretty much doom whoever else needed life saving treatment it in the meantime).

There's still a decent amount of uncertainty in the exact number. Wuhan had a 5.8% death rate (where the hospitals were certainly overwhelmed). Last I checked South Korea (where they're doing a great job in testing) was under 1%, but it's been climbing since it takes people a while to die. But there's also the fact that 10-20% of people need to be hospitalized, and of those even the ones who survive might end up with long term health damage (they've apparently seen considerably reduced lung capacity among critical cases that fully recovered; it's unknown of course if they'll regain full capacity over time).

The mortality rate in the US will be anywhere from 3-5% due to our terrible medical infrastructure, and the fact 40% of the country ignored the call to social distance.

This exactly. Guaranteed the true mortality rate in a developed nation is far under 1%. Undiagnosed people aren't dying and aren't accounted for in the overall mortality rates. This is the most misreported fact about the entire thing.
