Linear is good, but anything outside of shooting people in the streets, worldwide, won't stop this before a vaccine...

Well there is one thing that will "stop" it before a vaccine, and that's mutation into a less lethal form like what most likely ended the Spanish flu. Whether that happens or not is to be seen but it's definitely not out of the question. And it's just one more point of importance in "flattening the curve"

Restaurants, bars, and clubs will never close in Nevada. If anything, doorbusters will be getting announced soon.

Well the Wynn and Encore just announced they will be closing down on Tuesday, and the MGM properties have closed their buffets. So not even Vegas is immune.

Damn you're right. Consider me wrong and surprised. Wynn is the smallest of the major players, but it's still a major player. It really will be a post-apocalyptic Vegas story if MGM, Caesars, and Sands follow suit.

Well, if you push it below linear it becomes exponential decay!

Though you also have to be careful because you could be importing cases from other countries that don't have it under control. Apparently this has happened to Singapore (they had it basically totally under control and now it's slowly climbing again).

At what point are the containment efforts more detrimental than the virus itself? Lack of food and toiletries, disruption of education and employment, financial disruptions, etc. Seems to me that as a society we need to carry on and not worsen things. Worst case scenario, everyone continues their daily routines and gets sick, in which case theyd be missing school/work anyway but the rest of society wouldnt be hindered. No mass panicking for food and supplies, no missed schooling and work, etc.

Can't speak for any American cities/states, but the Canadian city I live in has 4 access points where you can go to get tested, if you have symptoms. All covered. Only major issue here is the same as most other places: toilet paper, hand sanitizer, and kleenex being out. Thankfully, I had a bunch anyway, and I'm sure there will be new shipments shortly (and less people panic buying, as a lot of it has happened already).

I mean, as long as I'm not paying for it doesn't make a difference to me either way. Of course, you're referring to people who maybe don't have insurance and so forth. I imagine that maybe people were being billed initially for COVID-related care, but it sure seems like the US is leaning towards unilaterally making Covid-related care free.

My sister is in London, where they have universal health care. It's really great to get care at no cost over there, but the wait times and limitations on selection are a legitimate thing. Also, my sister had a baby over there. It's her second. She had her first in the US. In the US, you get your own private room, a lot more flexibility with scheduling, and more time in the hospital if needed. In the UK, she had to share a room, scheduling was made for her, and they kicked her out earlier than what I wouldve liked (which led the tear in her c-section scar to break open from all the additional movement).

Bottom line is that its great that universal healthcare makes healthcare affordable to all, but we need to understand in America, that if that happens, the way we experience healthcare will decline to what we are used to experiencing now as far as service, availability, and selection goes.

Completely not true if funded correctly. Pre-austerity wait times were much lower, and they still often are if outside of London. In fact, public care actually outperforms private care because it doesnt need to turn a profit. And having a private room definitely doesnt make it right that having a baby costs $10k+ in the US!

I was born and raised in the UK then moved to Ireland which has a much more limited system. The differences are night and day. Any theoretical improvement in care does not make up for the imposed cost (which is heavily capped - nothing like the US) of the Irish system. To the point where people are less healthy because they actively avoid care due to the costs. And the care isnt even better! It is no accident that Ireland is regularly ranked near the bottom of Europe in terms of healthcare.

Also: you can still get private healthcare in the UK. So it is not even a correct comparison at all.

The positive side effects of this are definitely being understated and I feel it needs to be remembered as many of these practices should continue.

People are wanting to bring back manufacturing.
Borders suddenly matter.
People are focusing on health.
People are more conscious of unwanted touchings.
Employers are focused on health, well being, and what their actions could do.
Literally ISIS is scaling back operations to avoid Corona virus.

If you're right wing, the list goes even bigger - decrease in abortions, guns and the matter of personal safety becoming a lot more popular - but frankly this is pretty amazing.

(Lefties are happy too with the business reforms happening and the focus on healthcare.)

There's also likely to be a big increase in the use of working from home resulting in it being properly embedded into most white collar institutions, and better air quality due to reduced car travel in big cities (this has apparently been extremely noticeable in China over the past few weeks).

The Jakarta government put severe limitations around public transport, like cutting the number of train cars, cutting bus routes, and prolonging duration between departures.
They hope it would promote companies to take work-from-home measures and dissuade people from going around. But since companies be companies, it only made terrible bottlenecks around the transport hubs.

I was just reading up on the vaccine development... I didn't realize that the 1-1.5 timeline involves cutting a ton of corners (e.g. doing animal testing simultaneously with human testing rather than sequentially) and that the method is pretty experimental. The normal vaccine timeline is apparently more like 15-20 years, and this faster way is not guaranteed to work.

Ughhhhhhh.
