Pre-cautions can help though, it's 100% ridiculous to defy all pre-cautions because you may or may not die. This is like refusing to wear a seat belt because even with a seat belt you may die.

Just don't drive terribly while avoiding terrible drivers and you'll never need a seatbelt.

You hear it here first a smart driver could avoid every accident. Tell that to people I know that have had people come out of nowhere at high speeds and ram their car.

Unless that terrible driver has teleport abilities, or it's a blind curve accident, you should be tracking every car in a 500m radius. If you can't see 500m away clearly, you shouldn't be driving.

My GP practice has closed to all routine in-person appointments as of yesterday, and they're handing prescriptions out of the window rather than let people come into the waiting room because it's such a confined space that keeping a metre apart couldn't happen.

Given I'm high-risk, I'm more concerned at this point than I have been to date, but not panicking, yet. Nor am I panic-buying. I'm hacked off with people who are doing all their grocery shopping online who don't yet need to, though, I had nearly a 3-day wait for my usually-next-day-delivery shop because I couldn't get a free slot until really late on the 2nd day after my order. Grr. Nearly ran out of dog food! (Not that I think many of the healthy people starting to worry in all this are giving a thought to those of us who already have health-limited ability to leave our homes...)

1 of the 2 gigs I was meant to be going to over the next 2 weeks has been postponed (the artist is Italian), and I'm waiting to see if the other will be (she's Finnish, but has had to postpone the Barcelona date of her tour so far). I'm meant to be doing a meet-and-greet at that one, too...

we have a vaccine for the flu and the flu generally doesnt have nearly as high of a death rate for older people or the immunocompromised

the flu also spreads very rapidly among young children but so far this virus strangely hasnt been infecting many children at all

I don't know if it's actually that deadly or what, but they shut down anything with more thee 250 people in my area (WA seattle/tacoma/olympia etc).

That includes churches, all events and concerts etc. Nothing with more then 250 people allowed.

Not something I have ever seen in the past.

It seems this is stronger than the flu, and the concern is that it could bog down the hospital system.

yeah because people without insurance dont know what to do so they go to urgent care centers or an ER because they dont have a provider to call and the entire care team that takes care of them ends up getting quarantined. The shit is gonna start hitting the fan quick if we start running out of nurses and techs to work in hospitals

If ever there was a clear example of why we need to finally pull up our damn pants and start providing health care as a human right like the rest of the civilized world, our stupid handling of this virus is it

Dude, check out what is happening in Italy (probably in china, they just didn't let us know, as well). It's not hysteria.

People die because they can't get seen/care in a normal flu season (my wife did in fact cause the hospital was full and she couldn't get dialysis), but this is much worse, affects more people, and is much more likely to kill them if they are not treated/under care (and still has a chance to kill them if they are (especially if elderly).

We all better hope we don't hit the numbers like Italy in the US because we are not prepared for it, ALOT of people will die if we do.
