What would you do if the coronavirus was as dangerous as the media wants you to think it is?

I'd be extremely impressed, and be much more curious about how this situation would pan out. I'd also be all the more interested in this two day old bug I've got.

267 cases in Wa State, 25 deaths, not 33%, but almost 10%.

Rush out and buy all the toilet paper and hand wash I can then self isolate while constantly checking the news 24/7 but still catch it and die.

Its current reported mortality rate is 1% (down from 2%).

This still makes it the 2nd deadliest flu (by mortality), and possibly the 1st deadliest if you adjust for quality of medicine (since the most deadly was like 100+ years ago)

...

Even then, 1%, for metric - that's 5x as deadly as the regular flu. So, if you are afraid of regular flu you should be 5x as vigilant with this one.

But its not a flu

It's not influenza, if that's what we mean, but the symptoms are described as flu-like... not, say, flesh-eating escarotic pneumophagia or something

If it suddenly jumped up, it could lose its transmission most likely. If you notice, the more deadly the virus, the harder it is for it to spread.

Ya, that's why I included the caveat about the quality of medicine. Have no way of knowing if Spanish flu would have been as deadly if it occurred for the first time now

Also its spread was being swept under the rug cause of WWI. Neither side wanted to appear weakened during the war, so reporting on it was rare. Only country to really reported on it was Spain.

This is going to be a very uneasy allergy season... Bad enough that the crazy warm non-winter means it will start like a month early (will it end early, though? 'course not!)
But now I'll have trouble knowing if I have the virus when the symptoms basically overlap, and not touching my eyes/face is impossible during allergy season.

Not just swept under the rug, but the trenches were a terribly effective breeding ground to spread it. And then they'd send the sick incapacitated troops home, spreading it far and wide.

I'd win zillions in the lottery, because the laws of probability have changed and multimillion-to-one shots are suddenly coming true.

I'd park my cars, though, and not drive, because the chances of being in a car accident are thousands of times higher than the chances of Wuhan flu.

Probably die, because I'm surrounded by stupid fucks. My sister has been coughing for the last few days and still coughs all over everything without making any effort to cover her fucking mouth. Walked past her earlier, she coughed on me, walls and other stuff. It is like she is hoping to kill as many as possible if she has it.

I'm torn between Guinness, a cerveza with a wedge of lime (maybe Corona), or a Blonde Ale. Maybe even a Porter. Decisions, decisions!

It's almost St. Paddy's Day, Guinness it is! Or, with a pale ale, a Black & Tan if I can pour it right.

That would be pretty devastating.
In Italy for example:
2313 new cases, 196 deaths.
8% of people getting it are dying.
That's insane.

Iran: 958/63 = 6%
Spain: 527/18 = 3%

This. The reason diseases like Ebola or Hantavirus never really get past the initial outbreak is that it incapacitates or kills the carrier so fast they'd practically have to catch it on the ride to the airport to spread it to another continent.
