"Goodbye"

I remember our computer froze up one day when we had family coming over and were getting off the internet, and then once our family was leaving it decided to unfreeze and say goodbye as they were walking out the door. It was really funny

Seeing it installed on computers in the computer labs at school.

The computers had not been networked at the time.
Nor did they have modems.

I used to be the manager for a computer store and people were always coming in asking for AOL disks. I would get some in the mail, so I'd give them one of those, but people were asking faster than AOL was sending them. So I called AOL and asked if they could send a few disks to the store.

A week later UPS shows up and wheels in a CRATE full of AOL CDs!

My memory is pretty vague but I recall there being a way of reinstalling AOL to reset the trial period. One of my favorite things I remember doing on AOL was going to cdnow.com, which was later bought by amazon, to find new music and listen to the song samples.

AOL itself...not many.

AOL Instant Messenger, though? damn, I loved that.... Was really sad when Verizon murdered it.

I had so many great memories with that. I ran my first ever D&D campaign in an AIM chat room...I don't even know how I managed to handle combat w/ no visual grid and just describing positions by text... But it worked.
And of course by far the greatest memory is the IMs between myself and a girl I liked that went on for over half a year before she agreed to come over to my dorm to watch anime with me. Been together ever since. :)

I was using AIM right up to the final day. It was so much better than any of the other instant messengers I tried...more features, and just used so little bandwidth....literally were times that I had "lost internet" and nothing was working...but AIM still had a freaking connection, and I used it to ask friends for help to troubleshoot my lost connection, lol

AOL Messenger and chat rooms. I used to frequent chat rooms a lot back then. DigiChat sites were great.

The new AIM design was terrible. They just copied MSN's new terrible design.

The custom chat rooms were awesome, and when AOL started offering "themes" that you could apply to the entire UI.
