playoffs do reward teams that get hot/healthy at the right time - but, it's understandably natural to want the season to end with a climactic showdown as opposed to a foregone conclusion, right? the team with the best record could literally rest their final few games and still be that.

Oh yeah totally, I'm not trying to say it doesn't make sense, it does from an entertainment standpoint. It's just not what I prefer is all.

Nobody wants the best team to win, they want THEIR team to win.

Exactly. Everyone wants to believe their team has a chance.

And I don't care that much about "fair" with playoffs. I'm fine if the best regular season team doesn't win.

Winning your division should definitely earn you HFA in the playoffs. If the 12-4 Seahawks can't beat the 8-8 Eagles because the game's in Philly, then the 12-4 Seahawks aren't really the better team.

Sports are far too fluky to definitively say that a team is definitely better/worse than another based on the results of one game.

But the fact that anything can happen in a single game is part of what makes sports great

Sure, I'm not disagreeing with that

This is what I'm disagreeing with.

Playoffs reward the team who is healthiest and in the best form at the end of the season rather than rewarding the team who has been the best for the entire season. Every game should matter and with playoff systems that frequently isn't the case

I mean even if you go by regular season standings it still rewards who was healthiest

If Giannis got hurt for a month or two the Bucks would be toast, whereas with a playoff system they'd still have a chance to run through the bracket if he got back in time.

the team that's healthiest over a whole season is better though

giannis getting hurt in april or may would be a travesty, like last year's finals

I mean, it's not arbitrary. It's not like it's decided by random number generator. That's just how parity works. Sports don't operate by the X-Stats.

why even care about sports if you're worried about it being arbitrary? you're not playing, just watching other men do arbitrary things.

I felt like football had the perfect schedule before Thursday night football fwiw. Now its a little too much and having one team get a bye and home field isnt what I would want

So is the CBA that players are complaining about wrapped up with this playoff change?

Exactly. As it stands, as long as Giannis isn't hurt for the playoffs, the Bucks have a shot. With the other system, if he misses a month at any point they're basically out of it. There's more potential for an entire season to be lost.

Also with basketball you have to beat a team 4 times which removes a lot of the flukiness, like the '14 Hawks for example.

I mean Sefolosha was pretty good for them

regardless the fluky part is that LeBron no longer cared about the regular season at that point in his career so the Hawks having the best record in the East didn't matter

(also he hated David Blatt and actively tried to get him fired)

He wasn't bad but he was like their 7th best player

Lebron also missed two weeks or so with injury that season iirc
