How did an 11-5 team miss the playoffs? I remember that year the Dolphins had the tiebreaker, but were there really two other 11-5 or better teams that didn't win the division?

Oh, I doubt you'll ever have to worry about Wild Cards making the playoffs with losing records.

7-9 playoff teams only ever happen with garbage divisions and their winners.

Sure. It just doesn't quite feel right intuitively that the first team out has never been 7-9 since the Texans were added, even if it makes sense at a deeper look.

Playoff teams with losing Records are 2-2 IIRC since then too.

Seattle went 1-1, Carolina went 1-1 (Granted it took Arizona being on their like 4th QB.)

(1)Titans 13-3
(2)Steelers 12-4
(3)Dolphins 11-5
(4)Chargers 8-8
(5)Colts 11-5
(6)Ravens 11-5

Yep. Ravens and Colts went 11-5 but didn't win their divisions. That year also had the hilarious then 5-8 Chargers winning the division over the then 8-5 Broncos.

BOO to adding more mediocrity to what should be the most exclusive playoffs, and double BOO to adding a 17th game to the regular season! 4 games on Wild Card Weekend is perfect as is.

Really not understanding how a 17 game season would work. How would the 17th game work? Worst team in the division plays the best team from a division from previous season or just some sort of random draw?

Maybe I'm missing something here

A guaranteed playoff spot is already enough no reason to give the 8-8 eagles a home game while the 12 win seahawks or whatever have to go on the road because their division opponent has the 2nd best record in the entire league

(Although home field low key matters less than ever in the NFL)

Or it could be the consequence of not winning enough games.

And a home game would be the reward for winning more games than the other teams.

To me that makes more sense as something to be rewarded for.

I'm more or less ambivalent. We used to have 12 playoff teams in 28 so this more or less goes back in that direction.

Baseball's proposed changes were hideous and out of the blue. These were more along the realm of expected.

It already is the consequence of not winning enough games.

I guess I just don't have sympathy for a team finishing 2nd or 3rd.

Yeah Playoffs are for entertainment and money making purposes rather than crowning the best team. In the NFL it makes sense because of how it is scheduled. In other sports where it would be entirely possible for everyone to have equal schedules, it makes less sense.

Playoffs reward the team who is healthiest and in the best form at the end of the season rather than rewarding the team who has been the best for the entire season. Every game should matter and with playoff systems that frequently isn't the case

Yeah, you've got the right of it. As shattered said it makes more sense for sports like football or, say, college sports, where you can't play every team, but even so, playoffs' purpose isn't for finding the best team, and I'm into sports for the competitive aspect of it. To see which team is the best. I totally do get why playoffs are exciting and I do get excited for them, and I understand that sports are entertainment, but it still isn't my ideal world.
