What the hell was happening in 2001 where this nightmare of cinema was the most acclaimed movie of the year?

I am--not exaggerating in any way--nauseous from watching the first quarter of this. There is a cut every half a second. The makeup, costumes, and set design look like vomit. And interspersing Nirvana and Material Girl for 5 seconds at a time was one of the most audibly grating things I've ever heard.

I can't finish this because I'm actually becoming sick but this is probably the worst movie I've ever seen.

I don't remember it being that well received at the time. Mostly that it was a beautiful mess.

For most people that like it it's a guilty pleasure. Even as a fan, how it was so acclaimed and won all the awards I have no idea.

It won best picture at the golden globes and is on a bunch of lists

But it's literally unwatchable

I felt the same way. I tried watching it years ago and I had to turn it off after like twenty minutes. Maybe I'll give it another shake someday but I can count with one hand the amount of times I have turned off a movie and given up on it like I did with Moulin Rouge.

Normally I'd have an open mind about stuff like this, but watching it was torture. And the music was bad!

And, like take it back. It is probably, no I can say relatively definitively (there is only really one contender I haven't seen), the best musical ever made in modern times.

It's objectively not good. Like, you guys suggested watching it, and I did, and it wasn't very good. I am sure it is good on a stage, but the movie isn't good at all.

There were bad parts of it. But as a fan of the musical I think the movie does a great job.

i mean, i haven't seen les miserables but when you have a musical and one of the main actors in it can't sing that's kinda unforgivable. seems tough to defend the stance that the "movie does a great job" when that's the case >_>

I thought it was dumb as a kid, but don't know what you're taking about with the shots making you sick

The music and art direction was clearly well executed, even though I'm not a fan of the musical or romance genres

I just sort of lumped it together with titanic as one of those theatrical events that wasn't targeted at me

The can can song was pretty catchy iirc

I would disagree with this statement. More people went to see Les Mis, to an enormous difference, and they have the same IMDb rating with the same number of votes despite a 10 year headstart by Moulin Rouge.

Moulin Rouge is alright but I hated the mash up bits. I do love Romeo and Juliet by Lubrmann though.
The Greatest Show is better than the pair.

Metacritic and RT critics do not matter to popularity. They are the antithesis of it. Critical and industrial metrics should be excluded.

I think it is safe to say that "worst movie ever seen" is definitely not an apt assessment of Moulin Rouge no matter how you may nitpick your preferences. Moulin Rouge is a great movie. Though Nelson obviously can't judge that because he didn't watch it all.

It's interesting to include RT because in the late 00s they were attached to another rating service called flixster iirc, and that service called 2/4 ratings positive. Those ratings are artifacts that I likely would take less seriously, especially when IMDb uses a rating metric rather than a pass-fail. You could make an argument that Les Mis might have a more passionate or dedicated fanbase if it has more overall detractors and yet pulls the same 10-point rating. That suggests its popularity is more tangible.

We are talking about two very successful movies though. Definitely not deserving of worst-of tags.

Also Late 90s/Early 2000's were a weird time in film imo. So many movies were rather cheesy.
