The 360 is the console of its gen I ended up getting the most out of, but it's not nearly as clearcut as many other generations.

The Wii had the highest sales figures, even if places like GameFAQs probably wouldn't rank it #1... still, it has to be in the conversation.

The 360 had a clear upper hand on the PS3 early in terms of both sales and exclusives (even in things like JRPGs which you wouldn't expect Microsoft to compete in), but the PS3 definitely stormed back late (e.g. The Last of Us), so when the dust settled I'm not sure you'd consider the winner to be clear.

Honestly, I'm tempted to award the 360, Wii, and PS3 a real three-way tie for that generation, and that speaks volumes to all three. The 360 started things off with a bang, recovering from some early problems and bad publicity, and had a massive library with unforgettable online and was arguably the "default" option for multiplatform games. The Wii's sales were insane (I don't think anybody who tried to get one in 2007 or 2008 will ever forget that madness, I know I won't), and it had an incredibly broad appeal. The PS3 made one of the biggest comebacks ever, going from being a joke in dead-last to becoming a legitimate contender with a long life (systems were still being made and sold well into the PS4's lifetime) and arguably the best exclusive line-up of the bunch.

This was the only generation ever that between my brother and I, we had all three major systems (I had a Wii and a PS3, and my brother had a 360).

360 dominated early on when Sony did its whole "only 500 buckaroonies!" and "Riiiiiiiidge Racer" shtick and basically did what Microsoft would do in the current-gen with XBO. Xbox Live and the UI of the console were also trillions of miles ahead of the PS3 interface for a long time (and with the UI I would still consider it ahead of PS3). But Microsoft started losing its (console)-exclusives like BioShock and the Mass Effect series and like someone else said, started losing JP support (and Blue Dragon and Lost Odyssey weren't that amazing to begin with anyway).

It slowly but surely started to have the same problems the One has now.

The Wii, PS3 and DS all outsold it worldwide. In the US, the DS outsold it. IIRC the only major territory the 360 is the outright winner of (meaning not measuring total revenue of units sold or separating handhelds) is the UK.

Xbox 360 unfortunately finished last in the generation. It ushered in the fall with the Xbox One by cementing bad ideas. The loss of Bungie, closing of studios, failed acquisitions (Bioware), the all-in on Kinect, and the giving up in the foreign markets (nameably Japan).

While it did beat out PS3 for basically of the generation and the Wii was a short lived fad, it unfortunately was the middle ground that ended up short in the end. I would give it a pass, but again, this generation is what lead to the Xbox One decisions and company direction which left Xbox One in a bad position.

360 won the early part of the gen which is the part which will linger in people's mind long term. It had a ton of good will going for it that they all pissed away with the Xbox One

360 won its generation by nature of review copies sent out by publishers were generally 360 copies, which means publishers saw it as the leading platform.

I'd say PS3 came out of that generation the best riding off of PS3's awesome exclusives and end-generation momentum.

You could make an argument that any of the three consoles won the generation.

Gears of War
Gears of War 2
Gears of War 3
Gears of War: Judgment
Halo 3
Halo: Reach
Ninja Gaiden II
Saints Row
Fable II
Banjo Kazooie: Nuts & Bolts
Lost Odyssey

And then these that eventually got PC ports only:
Alan Wake
Left 4 Dead
Left 4 Dead 2

That's rather unimpressive compared to the Wii and PS3 exclusives (not counting releases on newer consoles).

I got 15 hours into Lost Odyssey the first time back in the day. I have tried and failed to get past the first 2 hours after 4 separate attempts since then. I have determined that that's a game people really wish was good because of how cool it seems, to the point where they are convinced it must have been.

The truth nobody is willing to admit. Having that at the outset makes the PS3 a deal at launch, lol.

I got to Disc 4 in Lost Odyssey only to be victim to a common problem in Disc 4 being unreadable. After like six or so years, Microsoft offered the digital version for free. I downloaded it, and reloaded my save. I had no idea what my objective was or where to go, and I didn't have the desire to start over.

It wasn't anything special anyway. The best part was the dream short stories, which of course is not something you want to say about a video game.

I'd be willing to try a Lost Odyssey remaster/port with no load times again. IIRC, my problem was that I wasn't too into the main cast. The memory things were super cool though.

I feel like you missed a Fable and Forza somewhere in there, probably quite a few others. However, yeah, Halo 2 being probably the peak of Xbox video games does sting a little.

360's xbox live was great, compared to nintendo and sony.
360 controller was the best of its gen. Made cod and nhl games feel so smooth.

Also arcade and indie games were good. Avatar golf was incredible. Shame nothing has been like that since

Netflix was neat too... watching movies with your friends was a fun feature
1v100 was awesome but short lived.

360 was a really good time.

Ninja Gaiden II got ported to PS3 later as Sigma 2, and the bottom three games were not great. Also lacking Forza

also I like how PS3 and 360 are still on the GameFAQs header when Wii U dropped off it long ago. I think PSP even outlasted the Wii U on the header, but at least Vita's still up there (also from predating the Wii U)

I guess PS360 will go when PS5/Xbox X are added....... though I'm not sure when that's decided, I remember there being a Revolution board pretty fast

Oh yeah, if the DS is included it's the obvious winner. But the innate differences between portables and consoles, combined with the fact that the portable and console generations don't always line up well made me assume that the topic was just discussing the consoles.
