Have you ever gone "dumpster diving" before?

30 y/o Stephanie Cox's remains were found in a horrific discovery in a GARBAGE CONTAINER as it appeared she went "dumpster diving" in a LANDFILL looking for valuable junk that may have been tossed out!!

The North Carolina woman climbed over a dumpster behind Alamance Crossing Shopping Centre in Burlington as police located her remains at Uwharrie Environmental Landfill

Her family members say it wasn't uncommon for her to collect items at local dumpsters as she would always rummage around garbage areas looking for stuff thrown away that she could keep and re-use

Her family reported her missing on January 30 as cops found an unattended vehicle before the strip mall and determined it was hers and not stolen

Surveillance Footage shows her climbing over one of the dumpsters behind Boot Barn and Five Below, a teen oriented retain chain as she did not emergefrom the dumpster as a garbage truck arrived and serviced the dumpster at 1:47am tipping the contents into a compactor

Police launched a searchat the landfill as her remains were presumed to be there...until it was eventually found in the truck

The case brings to light the dangers of dumpster diving and police are warning it is not safe to do

A Gofundme was launched to help for expenses.

Have you ever gone "dumpster diving"?

Cans are not a quick source of money, they are a slow un economic way to make money. You average something like 1.5 cents per can. unless your time is worthless, almost any other endeavor will make you more money per hour.

Not sure where you're pulling that average from, but redemption rates are 5-10 per can/bottle in most US states.

When I lived on Nantucket some 16 years ago or so, there was a couple who spent their whole day hoarding bottles and cans for redemption. Long days, I'm sure, but it's unskilled work and you have no boss to report to. They worked the beaches in the summer tourist season and had a flat bed truck that was always filled with huge bags of cans and bottles.

Nantucket was an expensive place to live back then, and my uncle who still lives on the island says those people are still kicking around. So it's definitely a viable form of income, but it takes a lot of work and I'm sure they're not wealthy but not everyone feels the need to accumulate wealth. As far as I know, they're happy with what they're doing for income.

Now that I think of it, I don't think they have to claim that income, or at least it's probably difficult income for the gov't to track. It's highly likely they're collecting from welfare on top of the cans and bottles, so maybe you can't live solely off of it, but still...

That's a lot! In my city, it's based on weight. At a scrap yard, at least. AFAIK, that's the only place you can make any money (though, you can use certain ones for Six Flags). But by weight, the prices are pretty low, IIRC. One guy does it, but he takes other things that are worth more. And just take the cans with him, as well...

Depends. The type and amount depends on where the trash can is and when it was last dumped... Like one of the ones at my job was always just filled with bags of shredded paper. Anything spilling out was no big deal. The one at my other jobs had more random things. That being said, it was big. And if they collected it in the morning, there would be much at night. Just standing in it won't cause you to be dirty or anything. I would eat off it, but I wouldn't eat off a lot of things. And most things are in bag. If someone is throwing out a bunch of new things, they will be in bags inside of bags. Maybe even inside another bag... I would definitely say there's a difference between a dumpster behind a retail store. And a dumpster behind a restaurant...

Apartments where I live, I went to take the trash out one day last year and I looked inside the dumpster I picked (we have those cube ones with the sliding doors). There was TONS of manga, I mean really old stuff from the 80s and 90s. I'm a comic collector, so I was able to estimate this was at least ten longboxes full of stuff. But it was all really badly water damaged. I guess someone had a pipe break or something. :(

That definitely sucks. It probably why they threw them out. If they were mine, and I was just a reader, I'd probably keep them if I liked to reread them. For a collector, though. It's very different...

I used to go dumpster diving with my sister at her private university at the end of each semester. It was amazing the sorts of things people there would throw away, we'd often find designer clothing and accessories with the tags still attached. My most cherished gain was a collection of PS1 and PS2 games.

It certainly wasn't the compactor that got her. Even if she fell asleep in the dumpster (lol) the initial bang of the truck hitting the dumpster would have woke her up. Not only that everyone would have heard the screams. She was likely dead before getting dumped.

She might've got trapped somehow. As for the screaming, the pic looks like the back section with not many travelers. There's also the fact that garbage trucks are loud as fuck, and the driver most likely had the windows closed, possibly listening to the radio.
