Well, let's consider Maslows Hierarchy of Needs.

Most people will agree that what they want is somewhere in there. However what they don't agree on is the order. Different people will prioritize their needs differently. So when 2 people interact by looking at what needs have not been met they may disagree on which is more pressing. When people don't agree on priority it calls into question whether the other person is an asset or a hindrance to meeting their needs.

Another thing that separates people is methodology for meeting needs. To what extent is it acceptable to pursue ones own need if it means depriving another of what they need? How do you balance individual pursuit with collective cooperation? How large is a collective? Who is part of the collective and who is not?

We can scale up this problem further. Suppose 2 collective are at odds yet there are individuals that cooperate with both groups. Group A pursues a more immediate need. Group B pursues a need that is met repeatedly over time. They could be divided on methodology for choosing between them.

I think most sane rational people regardless of race, sexual orientation etc want good paying jobs and careers, decent communities to raise their kids and schools to send their kids to.

I also think most want a decent quality of life but we all know a certain group in America has been systematically denied access due to institutional racism etc.

See, I get called "alt-right" for pointing out our potential when the elite are out of the picture. If the "1%" use our money to buy $500 million yachts and shit, imagine what we can do when our energy (money) is distributed the way it ought to.

Fear is what divides us. It's the reason to not be trusting and generous. It's also the reason to betray others and look out for yourself. Not that I see any real solution to that. You can try to increase understand so people can see whats not worth being afraid of, but that only goes so far.
