Sorry about the delay. I've had a lot of stuff come up. Because I'm not happy with at least two of the ratings I've posted already (Silver Will is one of them), I will be putting in a "revised" rating for them in a separate column soon.

156) Lufia II: Rise of the Sinistrals - Battle #3
Series rank: 2 of 2
https://youtu.be/RBnYGYa6l3M
Composer: Yasunori Shiono
Score: 6.5/10 (Good)
VGMC History: VGMC 2 (Lost R3), VGMC 3,(Lost R1), VGMC 4 (Lost R3), VGMC 5 (Lost R6 to Chiro 6's Life)
Favorite Part: https://youtu.be/RBnYGYa6l3M?t=76

Catchy intro, isnt it? Random fact: this tune has likely been stuck in my head more than any other video game track during my teenage years! Throughout the track, the percussion REALLY does its job in providing punches and energy honestly its one of the best SNES themes Ive heard in that department. The initial theme comes off as generic to me, though thankfully, the bass beat is really cool, so it partly makes up for that. It gets betteras we head into 0:56, though. I dig those those hemiola patterns at 1:00, which reminds me of the intro! Not only that, but you got this WEIRD muted lick in the background thats TOTALLY foreign! 1:16 has a fun rhythmic structure (I like the layout of the accents), and then it gets to repeat the idea a few times as it heads toward the climax and end-of-loop. Overall its good, but I prefer the regular boss battle theme.

155) Jets 'N' Guns - Shop Music
https://youtu.be/dGzGSapPGL8
Composer: Machinae Supremacy
Score: 6.6/10 (Good)
VGMC History: VGMC VI (Lost R4), VGMC VII (Lost R6 to Re-CODA)
Favorite Part: https://youtu.be/dGzGSapPGL8?t=95

Hmmm it has a very full sound to it! It's like an extremely dense painting landscape of sounds (I'm sorry, my descriptions are terrible)! The way the offbeat-based melodies are used makes it all even cooler! Despite those things, I guess Im not usually into electronic rockish stuff when it's this loud? Still, the staccato stuff in the background is cool, especially at 0:48. Nice slow synth stuff, too. I dont like that electric guitar at 1:03 too much I feel like it doesnt belong, though I like how it continues the offbeat stuff. The acoustic guitar is much more welcome, though, and I enjoy how it takes over when everything else softens yes, very nice indeed, especially with the electronic punches beginning each phrase.

154) Xenosaga Episode II: Jenseits Von Gut Und Bse OST - Communication Breakdown
Series rank: 4 of 4 ("Xeno")
Composer: YUKI KAJIURA
Score: 6.6/10 (Good)
VGMC History: VGMC 1 (Lost R5 to Stickerbrush Symphony)
Favorite Part: 0:00-0:26

Yeah, I know Xenogears/Xenosaga/Xenoblade aren't exactly the same series, but I thought I'd lump them together just for fun. This has a German game title, and its a game made in Japan. zOMG AXIS POWERS. (all we need now is a Mario cameo) The opening low crescendo. It reminds me of the opening of Light from the Netherworld from Xenogears I wonder if that was intentional? WOW at the vocals immediately following. They exude a primitive/chanting quality, but its kind of operatic, as well. Thats probably the highlight of the whole thing. Strings take over from here playing legato, contrasting the rhythmic beginning. Then the strings play nearly the same thing as the vocals at the start, but its not nearly as awesome. The cymbal and chime do help, though. The vocals come back after that, but its not AWESOME like the beginning! Oh, well. (I assume its the same singers, but their role is different now) Still not bad, though very intense. 2:25 brings oh-so-lovely bells, perfectly placed. WOW! Oh, and it ends like it starts! Yummy.

153) Mass Effect 2 - Suicide Mission
https://youtu.be/VTsD2FjmLsw
Composer: Jack Wall
Score: 6.7/10 (Good)
VGMC History: VGMC IV (Lost R2), VGMC V (Lost R5 to Unfinished Battle)
Favorite Part: First 43 seconds

What Im wondering is why the heck you are going on a suicide mission?! (I never played ME2) Ooh, the beginning is fantastic. So quiet and subdued. The way it drones for so long seems like exactly the thing that should happen. At 0:43 I enjoy the big crescendo, first adding the low strings, then the percussive violins, then the legato horns. The rhythms in this track are fun its a 7/4 meter, but it splits them via (2+2+3)/8 with another (2+2+3)/8, which is actually kind of cool because the second one is displaced by an eighth note relative to the first. At 2:09 those sounds that I love come back, but this time with strings and chorus. At 2:47 finally the trumpets enter and shortly after that, the chorus takes the center stage. The trumpet at the end is good and unexpected. its not often we hear pure, quiet trumpet sound in a sample! Not a lot of variety in the harmonies, unfortunately (sorry, Im going to say that a lot in these writeups). Not a whole lot of actual melody, but composer didnt intend to have much melody: Its all about atmosphere with this one. Typical action cinematic sound here is "nice", but not amazing to me or anything.

152) Pinball Fantasies - steelchambers2
https://youtu.be/Za0GHrE4WIM
Composer: Olof Gustafsson
Score: 6.8/10 (Good)
VGMC History: VGMC 13 (Lost R5 to Chocolate Missile)
Favorite Part: 0:13 - 0:52

This beat Break the Limit. :[ Yeah, maybe you could complain about the overall sound quality (its an old game), but you cant deny the composers creativity with the sounds used. Orchestral hits, synths, trumpets, bells, and bass all impressively blend together. The rumbles, choo-choos, xylophones I LOVE the chord movements from about 0:13 - 0:52, especially with those 2nd interval rubs within them. Yummy. The flute at 1:41...wow, that's some excellent sampling! I like it a lot! The hyperactive bass movements. Ah, nice and DARK at 3:41. The unexpected melody at 4:18 helps propel the music to its close. Yeah, the music always seems to find some way to keep my attention for the most part (except for a boring stretch a couple minutes in).

151) Homestuck - Sburban Jungle
Composer: Michael Guy Bowman
Score: 6.8/10 (Good)
VGMC History: VGMC 5 (Lost R1), VGMC 6 (Lost R7 to Dorchadas)
Favorite Part: The section at 1:41

Here's the one and only non-video game music to make the list! Is Homestuck music even allowed anymore in these contests? Regardless, I'm kind of surprised myself that this one is ranked as low as it is. This theme is apparently about the suburbs within a jungle? Or maybe it's a Chevrolet Suburban in a jungle? (sorry, awful jokes) Okay, now on to the music... I first gotta note that xylophone pattern! (Nice chords there) It goes without saying it's an appropriate instrument for the title. I'm liking the way both the synth 16ths and big piano octaves are presented. It's unique for sure. I wish there was more development, but alas. 1:39 - I love how it concludes with those tripletized big chords! The section when the textures drop out is pretty good at 1:41. It kind of reminds me of... Ice Cap Zone Act 2. I like 0:52 where the synth joins the fast 16th note runs, especially when they start arpeggeiated all over the place. I enjoy the slight change of mood at 2:32.

Hey, we're 1/6th of the way through!

Whoops, I forgot Sburban Jungle's link: https://youtu.be/gOSnen64a7M

150) Air - Summer Lights
https://youtu.be/OiTqfiMlLVs
Composer: Jun Maeda aka Key
Score: 6.8/10 (Good)
VGMC History: VGMC 6 (Lost R3), VGMC 7 (Lost R4), VGMC 8 (Lost R5 to Small Two of Pieces)
Favorite Part: https://youtu.be/OiTqfiMlLVs?t=118

Traditional east Asian (pentatonic) opening with nice synth pad cluster... Piano flourish plays around with harmonic possibilities (sounds like something similar in Uminekos Hope)... yay for ambiguity! It becomes a bit more standard with the main theme. Its nice how it ends on a C major (home key is Eb) at the last moment, but otherwise its kind of boring on its own. Fortunately, other stuff gets added, such as traditional Asian-style stuff four-note motif around which the music revolves, especially when it comes back later at 1:17! String synths with fourth-based intervals (really, based on the same notes as that four-note motif) I enjoy the Shamisen-style piano countermelody at 1:58 its my favorite part, for sure! Panning light bells help with the atmosphere. At the very end, instead of the C major triad like before you get 1/4/5/7 chord (intervals used in earlier material)!

149) Barkley, Shut up and Jam Gaiden - Johnathan Taylor Thomas
https://youtu.be/XoMaqxivvKY
Composer: Dominique Messinger Rick Rhodes
Score: 6.8/10 (Good)
Favorite part: https://youtu.be/XoMaqxivvKY?t=48
VGMC History: VGMC2 (Lost R3), VGMC3 (Lost R1), VGMC4 (Lost R6 to Trombe!)

This game uses similar engine to Final Fantasy VI, or so I've read! I definitely need to look into the game, 'cause FFVI is one of my all-time favorite games! The game looks really quirky, but this theme is, IMO, the QUIRKIEST of all the retirees, even outdoing the Undertale music in that area! A men+women chorus at the start sets off a groovy, but relaxed, mood. An odd melody gets put on top of that and, um, yeah! Nothing but arpeggiated quarter notes to start off! The synth is loud and buzzy, but it has charm! Strange. But it's cool! Also, a melody (that doesn't break itself into chords) with only a few bits of accompaniment is a very "Uematsu" thing to do. 0:27 - now the arpeggios are doing 16ths, aw, yeah! I really like how the main theme repeats with thickened instrumentation at 0:48. I enjoy the surprise key change at 1:36, too! An additional surprise: the piano finishing it off in somewhat classical style is a memorable way to close it out.

Score: 6.8/10 (Good)

Favorite Part: https://youtu.be/B4QHpEn_zRM?t=78

Oh, geez... this got nearly tripled in its last match. I don't think it quite deserved that. I suppose when it comes to simple music, emotional themes top my list. This theme is a good example. Its very traditional pentatonic, Asian-sounding music. I enjoy the added note on the strong beats. I also like the dominant at the end of the second phrase, and Id assume its because of the same melodic fragment being used two different ways. Using low strings for support isnt uncommon, but it sound JUST right in this case warm and mellow and they especially sound good at moments like where play staccato. Some random 7ths add to the textures, too. In the second half, the melody gets some added oomph (in a subtle way) with how it leaps up to slightly higher notes than before. I especially like the ascent at 1:18-1:23. This music wasnt meant to be overly fancy or emotional, but I think its very good for what it tries to be. I dont know why it sounds so good to me it just does!

147) Xenogears - Small Two of Pieces
Series rank: 5 of 6 ("Xeno")
https://youtu.be/faJMFBBlvJs
Composer: Yasunori Mitsuda
Score: 6.8/10 (Good)
VGMC History: VGMC 1 (Lost R2), VGMC 2 (Lost R1), VGMC 6 (Lost R2), VGMC 8 (Lost R7 to Zero-Two)
Favorite Part: https://youtu.be/faJMFBBlvJs?t=306

Whoops... there are actually six "Xeno" retirees, not four! I still dont know how SToP ever got to round 7. It makes me feel good, though, because Xenogears ha one of my favorite twentieth century OSTs of all time, probably my second favorite from the 90's! (this song isnt even in my top ten from the OST, though) Hey, the intro uses the same musical idea that Phoenix Wrights Objection! Theme has, but this was released like 4 years earlier! Ace Attorney IS A FRAUD! (j/k) Anyway, SToP is based on Faraway Promise, a music box theme. One of my favorite music box themes, too. Im not into this particular style of 80s(ish) rock the theme was set to, particularly the snares, strings, and the harsh electric guitar involvement. The chosen sounds at the start are really lovely, though! The first half of the melody is alright, but the second half of the melody is what really shines (the chorus at 1:14 - 1:50), even though its slightly altered in a way I dont like. (compare to https://youtu.be/jEmTH7-nQUM?t=61) Good lyrics all around, too. 4:19 is cool how the singer takes over what the flute was doing earlier in the piece! More on that Celtic flute, though I dig that in general, but especially where its basically that and the harp towards the end! What a way for it to beautifully wind down! The harp reverb at the VERY end is chill-inducing! =O Its kind of a mixed bag, so putting in this in the good tier sounds fair enough.

146) Umineko no Naku Koro ni 3 - miragecoordinator
Series rank: 13 of 15 (When They Cry)
https://youtu.be/p85zQLOMlUY
Composer: zts
Score: 6.9/10 (Good)
VGMC History: VGMC 3 (Lost R5 to Youre Not Alone!)
Favorite Part: https://youtu.be/p85zQLOMlUY?t=171

Finally, our first Umineko track shows up! Piano starts with a haunting patterns typical of the series. So many subtle beeps, steam, cymbal reverbs, synth hairpins, etc. and Like most Umineko music, impressive use of sounds in the transitions between sections! 0:54 finally brings the main theme it seems like Ive heard this in another Umineko track. 1:30 - 1:32!!! Aw, yeah, love the wind chimes and blowing wind. Its kind of boring after that, though. Until 1:58 - 2:01!!!! YES!! (sounds like a furnace) Then it goes back to previous stuff played by different instruments. At 2:51 we finally get a nice contrast, probably my favorite section, though its not THAT great. Piano octaves give it some oopmh, while still being somber. Great instrumentation there. The softening synth wahs, yeeessssssss!! WHOA @ the ending chord (1st/2nd/4th/5th, YUMMMM)!!

145) BALDR Force | Face of Fact KOTOKO
Series rank: 2 of 3

VGMC History: VGMC 3 (Lost R1), VGMC 6 (Lost R2), VGMC 7 (Lost R4), VGMC 8 (Lost R3), VGMC 9 (Lost R6 to Dark Legacy)
Favorite Part: 1:42 1:57

Fun electronic banger! Good vocals! I enjoy the piano and the 16ths note patterns, the way they set up for the buildup after. Lots of weird/quirky voices Im not sure whether to like them or hate them! Hm, yeah, I like most of it! The weird sound effects are really fun, but the way they pan is kind of distracting. Nice ascending chord idea at 0:30. When the singer comes in, the enjoyment level drops a bit, as the melody is just...bleh. But it gets much better at 1:13, plus the harmony does more of what I like to hear (erm, actually does SOMETHING).. 1:42 is nifty how the singer drones on that one chord while everything changes underneath! Best part! The instrumentation at the end is nice, too, basically mirroring the beginning piano and acoustic guitar together, and ending on the chord-less tonic at the end works well.

Composer: Alberto Gonzalez
Score: 6.9/10 (Good)
VGMC History: VGMC 9 (Lost R6 to Kurokami Midareshi Shura to Narite)
Favorite Part: 0:44 - 1:06
Man, Ive never felt so much anticipation as on those really long low notes at the start of this track! Then it suddenly kicks into high gear at 0:28! Cool way to start. It then sets up one CATCHY beat. And then finally, what most would agree is a true classic gaming melody at 0:51! And then comes the formal melody after, but its not quite as awesome. Not that it takes AWAY from the overall experience, but if it lived up to the stuff before it, it would be my favorite Game Boy theme of ALL time. The awesome part then comes back at 1:36 YEEEESSSS! Extremely good stuff for how simplistic it may be in terms of analysis.

...and that finishes the "Good" Tier!

Not Good - 1
Mediocre - 1
Decent - 15
Good - 20

That leaves 143 out of the remaining 180. That means 79.4% of the field has earned a "great" or higher!

How about some more stats? Here's the representation so far by VGMC.

VGMC 1 - 2
VGMC 2 - 0
VGMC 3 - 3

The Wild Westand windy....what fun. It pretty much relies on one basic musical motif (minor arpeggiated dotted-eighth-sixteenth+quarter note idea), and it works great. The harmonic progression is intriguing! I like how the last chord of the FIRST phrase is a major V, but the melody anticpates a minor v. Then shortly after that it goes to a way cool major IV in the middle of the second phrase (see 0:38)... perfect timing of it. Kind of stereotypical with the way the Mexican trumpet and whistling are used. The guitar sound is absolutely perfect! Actually, it seems that ALL the samples were carefully chosen... impressive. Even the string samples sound just right.... I LOVE those super fast sixteenth-triplets they play at 0:43 as the pickup into the next section! This contrasting section where the horn and strings take over is YUMMY, too! Cool trumpet solo at 1:18... I like its movements that don't fit in with the meter perfectly... tasteful!

For me, this one is a mixed bag. You know, this was actually supposed to be ranked below miragecoordinator... whoops. I'll probably end up switching them around in my revised ratings. Tasteful use of sounds (hairpins and such) the first few seconds! I like the voice-like crescendo at about 0:29. Once we get into the real thing, we hear that famous hemiola motif pattern from the game (4/4+3/4+4/4+3/4+2/4). Those transitions, man...like at 0:58 - 1:03 and many other places! So tasteful. The violin plays a theme that reminds me of worldenddominator, but actually its quite different (maybe this does play in some other retiree...13 Umineko tracks is too much for me to keep track of the differences)! Its not like I was introduced to them gradually like most of you!) This melody is really explorative with those nice harmonies underneath it! LIke other Umineko melodies, it just keeps going and going! It lasts a whopping 55 seconds! I like how the melody has doubled octaves at first. The string chords and piano underneath is yummy. The hemiola returns again 1:57. Aw, yeah. 2:37 gets loud beats again :( And it kind of stays that way until.3:34. I can now appreciate the offbeat patterns oh, hey, a different hemiola pattern! Loud again at 4:34 until the end of the loop. :[ Overall, though I found most of the music a bit underwhelming outside of my favorite part, which is SO GREAT.

141) Undertale - ASGORE
Series ranking: 1 of 2
ELIMINATED: Undertale series
https://youtu.be/hMa4hZQbrms
Composer: Toby Fox
Score: 7.0/10 (Great)
VGMC History: VGMC 10 (Lost R5 to The Black Song)
Favorite Part: https://youtu.be/hMa4hZQbrms?t=109

Our first "series" (with two or more reps) gets eliminated! (To be fair, my favorite Undertale track is not on the list.) This kind of music is precisely why love Undertales soundtrack: its VERY quirky. And my bias towards NES games makes me love chiptune use, too. Seriously, Im flabbergasted by Toby Foxs abilities to not only create an entire game solo, but a soundtrack thats good enough to get two tracks retired in VGMC. Quirky modern use of chiptune. Use of timpanis and low choir samples make it that much more odd. I like the upgrade to maestoso at 1:32. I love the last 30 seconds or so when it gets quiet again the switch to Dorian scale sounds SO GOOD here, and then we get some weird scale modifications (flatted 2nd and flatted 6th at times) that make me smile! One thing I DON'T like is the intonation... it's, like, inbetween keys.

140) Alan Wake - The Poet and the Muse
https://youtu.be/GeSUvoY2oUk
Composer: M. Saaresoto, O. Tukiainen, M. Kaarlonen
Score: 7.1/10 (Great)
VGMC History: VGMC 5 (Lost R1), VGMC 6 (Lost R4), VGMC 7 (Lost R5 to the executioner)
Favorite Part: https://youtu.be/GeSUvoY2oUk?t=179

I tend to avoid most popular music genres, but singer-songwriter type music tends to cater towards me! Its simple, but enjoyable. It has a depressing feeling that I like. Lyrics are good. I find the acoustic guitar use refreshing ... the way it highlights the sharp 6 at the phrase ends, for example. Multiple guitar voices complementing each otherI like the upper syncopated stuff, the way the patterns bounce around. The soft backup voices are nice. The music slows, and the music ends Then out of the blue, you get this HUGE explosion of hard rock. SO EPIC, OMGOMG!!! Guitar impromptu-ish playing so groovy! Love the way it gets bluesy towards the end, the way its supposed to end, but then it keeps going up with that last TASTEFUL ornament before hitting the last note! Thats how you reach your destiny!!!

139) Umineko no Naku Koro ni 1 - Hope
Series rank: 11 of 15
https://youtu.be/xOq7ZNTPVug
Composer: dai
Score: 7.2/10 (Great)
VGMC History: VGMC 3 (Lost R4), VGMC 4 (Champion)
Favorite Part: The first 18 seconds

Finally we get our first "champion" on the list! Great instrumentation at the start! The electronic bells are very pretty. Piano flourishes are like water crystals! The build up of instrumentation is nice in the first half of it very pretty. I like how the "intro" melody turns into support for the "real" melody at 0:21... it makes for some nice counterpoint. The sustained (delayed) string synthsI wish they weren't delayed, and the sound quality isn't the greatest, though it provides fullness of sound. It's nice how the harmonies use the 5th of the scale for all sorts of harmonic usage...I, vi (7th), IV (9th), V.... Then at 1:18 the synth goes from staying on the root of the chords to ending on the 7th of a surprise new chord (major VI)! (oh, hey, the 5th note of the scale again) Nice climactic there IS a pretty climactic moment 2:24 - 2:27, the way it takes the climax part of the melody and halves the speed. <3

Both Hope and Poet and the Muse are too low :(

Hope probably one of my favorite Umineko tracks. It was my favorite for a long time, but I think I've come around on liking Ricordando more lately. I love heartfelt sounding piano songs in general, and this particular one is also really cool in context imo.

So wait, voting in these contests but only in some rounds is against the rules? Your contests regulars are the only ones whose votes count if you get an unexpected result? Might as well be making it on an invite only private board then.

No. But if you only show up the entire contest to vote for one song, and do so in every single round spanning a three month contest, I'm certainly going to flag that.

Sorry, I don't know what to tell you. There are times when the host has to be able to step in and blow the whistle. If you don't like the idea of someone exerting the authority to keep the contest fair, then maybe this isn't the contest for you.
