Three Houses definitely deserved someone, but a silent sword-using protagonist is the worst possible choice. Oh well.

I'm incredibly disappointed with Smash 5's roster expansions especially after 4's were great. Fortunately the roster is already so good it doesn't matter too much.

On the one hand, Im genuinely excited that my 2019 GOTY is getting a rep. I look forward to it. Maybe Ill even try to main Byleth.

On the other hand, my heart goes out to everyone who was hoping their favorite franchise would make it in but instead its yet another Fire Emblem character. That sucks for you, and I mean that with sympathy.

And on a third hand, goddammit, it should have been Edelgard. Sadly, Japanese players effing LOVE Byleth.

so we learned two things

1. the "three" sign WAS an indicator of the next character. So all of the crazy conspirists were "right" in trying to figure something out there
2. at the beginning of the pass, I saw people rule out a Fire Emblem three house character because its "too new"

Said it in the other topic, but they started working on the character before release, so they probably didn't even consider anyone other than the lead as an options.

But yes, as a 3H stan with almost 200 hours...this is a huge letdown. Nobody gives a shit about Byleth by themselves. Even people who do only do so for, like....shipping with Edlegard or someone.

They're putting in a main character from one of their biggest new releases. A lot of popular characters have sword. Our old beloved most popular characters here was 4/9 sword users. Such it is.

And Byleth looks different enough.

People should stop being pissed.

Every poll I've seen out of Japan had Dimitri winning it, not Byleth. In the west it's hard to say but I bet Edelgard is the most popular.

I get why Byleth was chosen, only character you get regardless of route, etc., but I can't not be disappointed here; Edelgard and Dimitri are two of my favourite characters period and Claude's great too and I figured there was a decent chance we'd get one of them, so Byleth just deconfirmed all three.

Like, I guess there's a chance that 3H gets multiple characters in (Awakening somehow has three) but people are already salty with the amount of representation FE gets so I doubt it.

With apologies to the people who wanted an actually hype-worthy announcement, I am enjoying this so much right now and I haven't even played Three Houses, nor do I care one bit about Byleth in general. This is the actual best-case scenario choice for me personally next to my true most-wanted, who is never even sniffing Smash anyways.

They don't listen

"Another sword guy" is a common complaint. "another fire emblem guy" is also a thing. Sure, they've confirmed they dont' add characters for popularity, but still man.

but at the same time, can we blame them? I guess they simply don't want to listen to the smash community and...thats actually fair too.

Touche on Dimitri! I forgot about that. Though Im quite certain Ive seen at least one that put Byleth at the top? Ill try to dig it up later.

Also its worth noting here that Byleth will have access to multiple weapons and isnt a Marth semi-clone in moveset, apparently? And theres something about costumes for other characters? Though Im not sure about the specifics; I had to leave like 15 minutes into the video

Maybe after all the complaining about Pokemon, and then Pokemon outselling smash showed Nintendo its far more profitable to give people the opposite of what they want.

They 100% listen, they just don't always act on it.

The Direct straight up joked about too many sword users before Byleth was revealed to have more weapons, for instance.

They know, and they knew people would be mad.

Why are people surprised/mad about this? It's a main character from one of the only Nintendo flagship brands that actually introduces new characters. And Three Houses was huge.

Well they probably have known who would be in the pass right when it was announced

It was probably a safer bet to go with Byleth than anything else from that game

I will say it's less that it's another FE character (I actually like using the FE characters in Smash a lot), but just the fact it wasn't anything third party.

I would have been happy with almost anything even if I didn't like what series it came from. Have the Fighter's Pass be all third party characters for hype, and put Byleth in the second pass to round things out. That would have been fine. Imagine seeing nearly every single gaming company nearly outright begging to include their characters and they go and choose another Fire Emblem protagonist. Nintendo is mad.

I already got all I could have possibly asked for, between everyone being back, and my realistic most wanted after that (a Dragon Quest character) coming as part of the first fighter pass. At this point, my reaction to someone like Dante (maybe not the best example since I haven't played any of his games, but you get the gist) would basically be "cool, a big-name Smash character".

Byleth actually looks really good; can't wait to play as her with that sweet sweet three houses music

they have alts for the lords and their weapons too, so it's like four characters in one (kind of)

I don't mind that they chose a 3 Houses character, but the fact that they made what seems like by far the most uninteresting choice of the main characters in that game killed any potential hype for me.

I could have even been brought back on board if Byleth looked fun to play (a similar situation to Corrin in Smash 4 outside of no one knowing Corrin was lame in FE: Fates since the game hadn't come out - or at least not in the west), but a slow character with a moveset that looks mostly bad isn't doing anything for me either.
