Baretta Xtrema 2 is easily the best gun I own. I have put more shells through that fucker in a day than most shotguns see in a lifetime.

Its pricey, but since money is no object that's what i suggest. It's a shotgun, so you don't need to be a marksman to be lethal with it.

Need more info.

I live in a 3000 sq ft. house. including the basement. It is a two story home, built in 1892. There is an attached garage, built in 1987. The well is under the house. The house sits on 0.9 acres of land, with close proximity to two cities and one town, with easy access to a major highway at three locations. The house uses gas for cooking, as well as electric. We have a coal stove, wood stove, and an electric furnace .

There are several neighbors by the house. Roughly 15 would be a good estimate.

There was a buit-in safe in the wall in the den on the first floor, but that was removed by the previous owner. All valuables are kept hidden elsewhere in the house.

In the event of an intruder where lethal force would be needed (and NY is a duty to retreat state so I can't just go blasting), my wife and kids would hide in our bedroom. If the individual comes up the stairs, I don't have to leave my bedroom to have a clean shot from the head to the chest.

I have multiple vantage points and options to pick from if needed, even go so far as to lie prone under my bed in the foot of space.

If things were perfect, I'd use the basement. But anyone who breaks in would be near that entrance

I'm rather fond of the "buck and ball" design for a shotgun shell, like the Winchester PDX1 12 Defender, which packs a 1 ounce rifled hollow-point slug and three plated 00 buck pellets into a 2-1/2" 12 gauge shell.

They also make a .410 version for guns like the Taurus Judge. It has either 3 Defense Disc projectiles and 12 BBs for the 2-1/2 inch version or 4 discs and 16 BBs for the 3 inch version.

Yes. Unlike some states like Texas where one can defend their property with lethal force, and Florida with the "Stand Your Ground" laws, we're supposed to run away and hide.

Great example how asinine it is and it's still a problem: about 6 years ago, a guy broke into a person's home with the owner there. Owner calls 911 after seeing the guy has a knife. One of those good hunting knives, not a little switch blade. He runs into the bedroom to be safe and potentially arm himself

Intruder hears him and tries to break down the door. Meanwhile, owner is panicking, begins loading his shotgun. Intruder broke through and charges.

Owner never got a shot off. He just issues a quick buttstroke with the shotgun and breaks the guy's nose and cheek bone. Problems solved! No?

No. The DA charges the homeowner too with assault and few other charges, including intent on using a deadly weapon. He eventually dropped them all due to public backlash.

That's how screwed up it is here, and that's before the bail reform act

Murder was an exaggeration, of course, but it would be considered manslaughter where I live unless there's a direct threat to your life. You can scare them off, you can shoot to wound, but you cannot shoot to kill (though it's thankfully very hard to get your hands on guns here in any case).

Defending your property is not considered reason enough to apply deadly force, and that's how it should be in a civilized society.

That's one of the reasons why so many places stopped giving the death penalty for rape; the result was going to be the same for murder, so why leave anyone alive to talk?

A person has the right to defend property from being stolen but the extent of force varies from state to state. My state is a lot like the rules for self defense and force used is supposed to be equivalent to stop the crime and not more. People have faced jail time for beating the hell out of an unarmed thief with a baseball bat

Other extreme is like Texas where you can even defend YOUR neighbor's property with lethal force

AED use takes the success rate for CPR from ~10% to ~85%. Heart disease obviously is not the only potential reason for cardiac arrest that would necessitate CPR, but it seemed like the best word choice to make the sentence nice and succinct.

Most Americans are significantly more likely to have the opportunity to save a life in their home with CPR than with a gun. The ambulance is just as far away as the police are. Why rely on one when you like to believe that relying on the other is a death sentence?

AEDs are way more expensive than a gun. Which is really sad.

(You can buy a .22LR rifle for as little as $150, while an AED starts at $1250.)

I'd say stick with a large caliber revolver. .44 Magnum or .45 Colt. Revolvers are practically indestructible compared to automatics, and when fired single-action (i.e., you cock the hammer first) are much more accurate. And in a home defense situation with a large caliber round you should never need more than 5 or 6 shots if you're even a halfway decent marksman. A handgun is also easier to aim and maneuver indoors than a long gun.

The Taurus Judge has the ability to fire .45 Colt rounds or .410 shot shells. A 3" .410 shell can hold five 00 buck pellets, each of which is about the size of a 9mm bullet. Or you could use bird shot if you want something a bit less lethal. (Or a combination, load the first two chambers with bird shot, the rest with bullets or buck.)

If you really have your heart set on a shotgun, I'd recommend a 12 gauge double-barrelled break-action coach gun. They're super fast to load so you can leave it unloaded all the time. You just break it open, stuff a couple shells in, and closing the breach cocks the hammers. Make sure you get a model with an autoejector, it'll kick the spent shells out when you break it open. A coach gun has the shortest barrel that's legal to own so it's easier to use indoors than a hunting shotgun. Accuracy is for crap, but it's made for short range so that doesn't matter. Just don't pull both triggers at once.

They're not really unreliable though. A revolver may well work better after being dragged through a beach for 16 hours, but otherwise you can expect a modern pistol designed for military use to be more than capable enough for any normal citizen.

I'd say the option of more than 5 rounds and quality recoil suppression far exceeds theoretical reliability potential.

Hell, I can easily hit the center of a target at 75 yards with my shotgun. It may not be a true bullseye (as I take a paper plate and color the little circle in the middle red) but that's likely more about my aim than the gun

One thing that's being overlooked on this discussion thread: license and costs. To get one for a pistol in NY, you need 6 signatures from nonrelatives saying you won't shoot places up. You need to apply for one on your county (mine is $150) and then you can take the pistol safety class ($100). If you pass everything, including the background check and mental health check, they can still deny you a permit

So you get your permit and don't forget to renew! If you live in New York City, pistol licenses must be renewed every three years for a fee of $340

To get a shotgun, you pay for it, show your license and/or ID and then you just wait to clear the background check. Then go pick up your firearm. No renewal costs

Different guns for different scenarios. If you don't have any loved ones outside your room and over penetration is not an issue a shotgun or rifle is the best choice. If you may have to leave your room to carry or escort a child, a pistol may be a better choice due to maneuverability and being able to carry a child or hold there hand, while still maintaining full control of your gun.
