Ironically, it's only needed in China because they don't have a history of Purity culture. In the Americas, you're either a 100 or a 0 when it comes to social credit.

I mean, think about it - who was the last widely popular grey area person?

That's an absurd idea, there is plenty of gray area.

But no thanks, I'd rather not be put on a No-Fly list for playing video games too much.

We already have one here, you're just not aware of it.
Recently I have been researching DNS over HTTP. Did you know that cloudflare (or other providers) likely log what sites you visit? It's pretty trivial to do.

There are some good and bad elements. On one hand, China has a pervasive lawlessness where a "Broken Windows" policy might do some good, but this will almost certainly go into free speech issues in addition to being yet another massive infringement on privacy.

I don't even approve of mandatory public service in schools meant to encourage people to be better citizens, I sure as fuck don't think we should aspire to living in a panopticon that enforces it through punitive reaction.

Though it's also worth noting that Asian "Shame Cultures" tend to operate on an entirely different scale than Western "Guilt Cultures", so even if it was a good idea there (which it isn't), it wouldn't necessarily be a good idea here regardless. Especially with the different emphasis on groupthink and communal morality versus individuality.

In a way, we do kinda have a psuedo system here with the whole 'law of public opinion' and whatnot...but yea, personally the CSCS is basically a way for ppl not to act like an @$$hat to others...if so, it should hurt your wallet (or better yet, any perks and privileges) you may receive...

That is not "basically" what it is, but thank you for providing us with Chinese propaganda.

In fact, it some ways it encourages behaving like an ass hat, since if you can provoke someone into doing something and film it (example: drive 10 mph on a 40 mph road but speed up when they try to legally pass until they pass in the breakdown lane and catch it on your dash cam), you can earn social credit for snitching on that person.

Wasn't there an episode of black mirror which was basically like that? Everyone had a social media account and likes and dislikes showed up, the lower your score, the less things you could do, or the more people would avoid you etc.

Think the main char like plumetted and couldn't do almost anything because her score was so low lol.

Well let me put it this way. I'm not sure exactly HOW it would play out but it would almost certainly play out one of two ways. Either you would be forced to speak positively of the president and worship the ground he walks on, or you would be forced to utterly despise the president and likely the entire republican party as well. Either way, you'd effectively see the immediate elimination of an entire political party as well as any dissenting voice or even voice that didn't 100% agree with the party line.

Yeah and unfortunately as the reality we're headed toward. The Chinese social credit system is an inevitability here eventually.

The wheels are already in motion with government working with big Tech to demonetize anyone who speaks out against the establishment

And when they try the SCOTUS will be flooded with 1st and 2nd, among others, amendment violation suits. In short it will never happen unless we completely fall over for an attempted coup.

Worry when Britain or an EU state implements aspects of a similar program. That's always the dry run for rolling it out in America.

The real dichotomy is more like "The squeaky wheel gets the grease" versus "The nail that stands out must be hammered down."

The West fetishizes individuality, the East demonizes it. And that's a difference of perspective that goes back thousands of years.

Then the person doing the 'provoking' would be in 'Bad' Social Credit terrority...I'm pretty sure there will be cameras everywhere to document incidences like this, esp on the City Highways/Streets...
