There are a lot of Christmas movies that aren't about the holiday itself but are still considered Christmas movies.

Why do people consider Home Alone a Christmas movie? It's just a kid defending himself and his home from some criminals. It just happens to take place during Christmas time.

Christmas is central to Gremlins, considering Gizmo was purchased as a Christmas gift and the movie was a deconstruction of holiday commercialism. It's more devoted to Christmas than a lot of movies starring Santa

If, in the logic of the movie, the event wouldn't have happened without Christmas. It's a Christmas movie. Die Hard, Home Alone, Gremlins all occur directly because of Christmas. Ergo, they're Christmas movies.

Because there's no such thing as theaters that show movies at times other than official first release.

I mean, I saw Star Wars and Empire Strikes Back in a movie theater in 1983. And I used to have a theater near me that would show movies months later but for like 1/4th the price.

And there's a theater near me that recently showed Godfather I and II one after the other. And I think they did a Back to the Future night with all three movies as well.

And I know one theater near me that shows Rocky Horror Picture Show every Halloween.

die hard could have just as easily been a normal office party on a friday night or something.

home alone just used it as a plot device to explain leaving him alone... it could have just as easily been thankgiving, or even just a normal vacation.

take out the christmas part, and the movies are the same

Yeah, but then you lose the entire subtext that he's estranged from his ex-wife, and that he doesn't really interact with her or the family much, and that she's extending an olive branch to him because "it's the holidays". You also lose some of the subtext of why he's so nervous (hence the whole subplot where he loses his shoes and is barefoot the whole movie, which Hans then exploits later).

There's actually a lot of Christmas elements in the movie. They don't need to be there, no, but they're still there. And saying you can take them out and still have a movie is true of most Christmas movies as well, so it's not really a valid argument (A Christmas Carol doesn't have to be about Christmas, it could just be about any old miser being misery at any point during the year, etc).

Bruce isn't flying out just to visit an office party. Flying out for Christmas, however, is an entirely different thing. I suppose it could be Thanksgiving, but most offices don't have thanksgiving parties.

It also could have been about a solar ellipse only viewable from Nakatomi Plaza but it wasn't. It was a movie written to be about an action hero saving his wife at Christmas. "Could haves" have no merit here.

Like I mentioned earlier, you could do A Christmas Carol pretty easily without the Christmas elements. It's not really about Christmas as much as it is about a miser learning to open his heart and become generous. Make the ghosts angels instead, take "Christmas" out of the title, and you've basically got a movie that can easily work on its own.

"Make the ghosts angels instead"

That's pretty much the plot of It's a Wonderful Life - an angel shows someone a parallel universe where he never existed, and how everyone's life is worse for it, justifying his own existence. It's not such a stretch to assume you could have angels (or even just one angel) who can show the past, present, and future.

Hell, you could even make it non-Judeo-Christian, and have it be the Norns. They literally represent the past (Urd), present (Verthandi), and future (Skuld). Or go with the Greek Fates and have Clotho show visions of youth, Lachesis visions of the present, and Atropos shows the grim future.

You could even go poetic with it, and have it be something like visions of the Past Remembered, the Present Unfolding, and the Future Foretold.

There really is very little inherent in the premise that is tied all that strongly to traditional aspects of Christmas as a concept.
