I haven't read any of the reviews because I want to go in knowing as little as possible, but a friend said that many of the critics explain that it is very predictable and that if you loved The Last Jedi then you would dislike this one. He loved TLJ so he's not happy about that, but that is exactly what I'm looking for so I'm pretty excited. This feels like one of those, "critics hate it, audience score is 97%" type of movies at this point.

My spoiler tag has nothing to do with a plot point or anything about the movie at all really, but I know some people don't want to hear anything about anything so I figured I'd add it in.

As someone who loves TLJ, sounds like this is gonna be terrible.

Few things I care less about in Star Wars than nostalgia wankery, and impressions seem to be that this is the entire movie.

the prequels gave us all the cool Jedi like Kit Fisto and Plo Koon, so theyre not 100% devoid of value even if theyre pretty bad

11 year-old me thought they were cool just based on the movie, but I havent seen it since 2002 so I dont know what exactly that feeling was based on.

It's hard to imagine a less original movie than The Force Awakens, but I guess that madman JJ's gone and done it

I didn't like the Last Jedi but at least it was trying. It tried and failed, but at least it tried.

I mean I liked both TFA and TLJ so I might like this too, but it does sound like a bummer. Part of why I gave TFA a pass on essential being a New Hope remix is because that's what the series needed at the time and it could build to something different. TLJ was something different. If we're just going to end on more of the same that is a bummer. Regardless of how I feel about TLJ, I don't want a movie that feels like Disney going on an apology tour!

agreed entirely. more than that, they need to give up on the whole "good/evil balance" crap. It was fine, but not enough to build three whole trilogies around. again, this was something TLJ tried to do, but didn't quite stick the landing.

but that being said, I didn't really like solo or rogue one either so maybe SW just isn't for me any more, lol

Solo had a lot of interesting ideas weighed down by compression, and TLJ was trying to force in roles for characters that had no purpose.

Clone Wars' best episodes focused on politics, Mandalorian doesn't touch on the Jedi, Rogue One steered away from Jedi. And a host of the best Star Wars comics focus on the seedier underbelly. Hell, Thrawn is far away from the Jedi world.

People who prefer the prequel trilogy largely do so because it was at least George Lucas's vision, just like the original trilogy, while the new films are a complete 180 from that and are specifically engineered to be event films that will grab most movie-going audiences who only watch a few movies in the theater every year - and are thus more likely to pick something they're familiar with.

The original trilogy was a miracle George attempted to sabatoge at every term that was salvaged by his fellow team leaders and wife.

If George had done the OT his own way it would be a laughing stock.

Hard disagree on this. Star Wars is both sides of the coin, and it should have media dedicated to both the Force side of things and the seedier side of things.

I'm aware I'm in the minority on that though.

next time they do Jedi stuff I want it to be either way in the future or in the past where there can be a bunch of Jedi again. Theyve done enough of the time period where theres maybe three people with lightsabers at once.

The low level stuff is where most of Star Wars' truly good storytelling happens, but the contrast against the space wizardry of the "main" story has always helped it be extra cool. Rogue One is a particularly strong example of this.
