When has reuniting 60+ year old actors from an older movie ever gone well?

Motherfucker so could a wikipedia page.

PT was worth it because, since Lucas was involved, it was still the same genre.

The issue with the new films is that they don't actually know what Star Wars is, so they don't really mesh well. Rian Johnson's vision could have been executed well, but literally was impossible after TFA set different tracks. TFA didnt know how to be Star Wars so it banked on copying what had come before to account for the fact that it was trying not to be the PT, which meant it was trying not to be Star Wars.

Prequel trilogy had bad writing and acting at points, but the movies were still Star Wars. Lucas isn't a great movie maker but he understands his creation at least.

Especially since the PT has less in common with the OT than the ST does. Both in content and tone.

I'm sure that means something to Han but I don't agree with it.... these movies are definitely Star Wars.

That's the same as arguing that Lion King 2 is less of a Lion King movie than Kimba.

There's tons of material in the Star Wars franchise that you can look at to see if things fit the setting or not. TLJ is clearly outside of the setting. TFA is not but it doesn't really do anything besides echo stuff that came before it, which is why it's a serviceable film but a disappointing star wars film.

Like I said - despite being a lackluster filmmaker by himself, Lucas is still the creator and there's a notable difference without him. This literally happens in every single other piece of media where the creator stops being involved after a certain point.

I'm tired as shit and did not make that point well, but I'll explain better tomorrow (maybe).

But basicslly? TFA tries to be a Star Wars movie and fails because it's just a recreation. TLJ tries to be something different and fails because it doesnt fit the tone or themes of the established setting (specifically mainline star wars movies).

New Star Wars fails because the movies are engineered specifically to be events, which is not necessarily bad but is a complete 180 from how the original six films were made in the first place.

it is probably a reasonable assumption that Lucas expected to make a decent amount of money from his 11 million dollar space samurai movie, yeah

Literally any movie you've ever heard of has this intent, yes. Not that it's at all a bad thing, but don't delude yourself into thinking any art that's marketed exists for its own sake. (Least of all multimillion studio productions)

Well it took me until last year to fully appreciate the original trilogy, and I felt like I had to understand how cinema generally was at around that time - I also watched the likes of The Godfather, Chinatown, and Halloween right before watching the OT.

Hurry up Saturday afternoon

Its early days for tracing fan score and there is the obvious risk that targeted bot campaigns will stupidly obfuscate the whole ordeal again but thus far that seems to be exactly what is happening

57% from critics

89% from audience

Just got back, liked it overall. There's a couple specific plot points that made me raise an eyebrow, and it's too fast paced with a lot going on, but other than that I really enjoyed it.

I saw the movie and

I liked it, but I did see some problems. I think it moved extremely fast, like they just cut out things. The permanent losses didn't feel that meaningful when they happened either. They did a thing too where they would say or allude to something and only a few minutes (maybe like 20 or something) later they would instantly resolve that little beat in the story. Like when Chewie "dies", Rey not taking Lukes saber... and then taking it just a couple of scenes later, "never underestimate a droid", etc. Like, the movie didn't let things stew... which is where I think the feeling of it just moving from point to point as fast as possible comes in.

The call backs to some of the original characters and such were nice. I liked how each of them had something to "give" to the new members. I also think the whole Rey and Kylo reaching across space by their connection to literally physically help each other was pretty cool. I'm not a huge fan though of like Kylo using force healing (or force exchange idk what it was exactly), that's a pretty heavy light side ability and even if he was reformed, I'd think he would find using it pretty difficult. I understand why they did it from a narrative standpoint, but it might be something that makes big lore fans annoyed.

I think the only reason Ben was able to use Force Heal on Rey was specifically due to their bond. I feel like he'd have trouble using it on anyone else. Really liked that he gave his full life force to bring her back though.

My favorite part of the sequel trilogy overall and this film specifically was Ben Solo's character arc. It's the most consistent thing across the films and Adam Driver really sells it. After his face turn here you really get the impression that Ben Solo was very different from the Kylo Ren we've seen. One of my favorite parts of the movie was when Rey transferred the lightsaber to him and he gave that little Han Solo-esque shrug before fighting the Knights of Ren. Just a subtle touch that's something Kylo would never have done.
