I would never want to count on Florida

And the Dems shouldn't; in 2018 it basically didn't shift at all despite Dems making huge gains everywhere else.

FL is like the least elastic state ever. You could travel back in time from 2021 and tell me the Democrats won Texas, Georgia, North Carolina, Arizona, Iowa, Ohio, and Alaska and I would still feel the need to ask "...So what happened with Florida?"

it's the living embodiment of lucy pulling the football away

Obama won it twice and it's a goldmine of EVs. I suppose I generally agree with you though.

But if you don't get Florida, you need 3 out of 4 of PA, MI, WI, and NC, which are probably going to be the swingiest Trump 2016 states other than FL.

Trump's been President for three years and the country hasn't burned to ashes in a smoldering fire, the economy - regardless of your metrics - hasn't collapsed, and we haven't entangled ourselves in any new wars that have resulted in the deaths of thousands of young Americans. Enough of the country has been conditioned to accept this pathetically lowered standard, and because of that, he'll be tougher to beat in 2020 even if he faces a stronger opponent than Hillary. The incumbent's advantage won't simply disappear.

Speaking more specifically, I still believe this election is overwhelmingly about the Midwest, and if anything I feel Trump will be stronger there than last time. He won't be ceding WI, MI, IA, and PA so easily (and OH is red).

I think this is right. The economy has been so strong, there's been no new wars, our international standing as a tough, self-interested, negotiator has improved. Incumbents rarely lose.

So, there was an interesting point raised by Chris Hayes last night as the impeachment was happening contrasting how the grassroots bases of both parties reacted to impeachment when it happened to them.

During the Clinton impeachment, the Democratic grassroots - then MoveOn - was calling for the censure of Clinton. A clear recognition that they knew and believed he had done wrong. Flash forward to today, could you even imagine the grassroots of the Republican Party calling for the censure of Trump?

That's because of the same thing I mentioned before. If you're a Republican who supports impeachment then you're not a Republican anymore. It's a tautology. That wasn't the case with Clinton.

It's a big gamble by the Republicans to shed all non-trumpers like this but it's probably the right move in the short term. Long term they seem fucked either way (unless the trumpers get their dictatorship) but who knows.

I'm having trouble understanding Van Drew's political calculus here. By all accounts he's said multiple times Trump is crazy, so in order to avoid a Republican primary challenge from his right, he'd have to lie and (probably) make votes he doesn't believe in. But if that's something he's willing to do, why not just do the same for Democrats and vote for impeachment? His opposition to it was allegedly based on strategy reasons, not because he thought Trump was innocent of the crimes, so there's no moral dilemma there. I guess he's just banking on Republicans being so grateful for the good news that they'll help him fight off a primary challenge?

Yeah Van Drews play here has been weird as fuck. My best guess:

  1. He does dislike Trump but thought impeachment would backfire politically
  2. He cares more about his own political fate than that of the party as a whole. He therefore decided to publicly bash impeachment and vote against the inquiry.
  3. This backfired on him hard, and his polling showed him he was likely going to fail to be renominated
  4. Again caring about his career more than any principles, he decides to gamble on switching parties

Very pathetic any way you slice it

If the House seriously takes the position that it doesn't have to send articles of impeachment to the Senate for trial, then the Senate will be able to easily take the position that it doesn't need to consider any such articles if they are sent later. The 6th Amendment guarantees defendants the right to a speedy trial if they so choose, and the Senate could easily just adopt that.

As for as delaying the trial, the motivation is obvious. The Democrats don't want to lose at trial. I think it's quite clever - trying to get the benefit of impeaching Trump for the election, without suffering the loss they'll take when he's acquitted. Props to Nancy Pelosi for thinking of it.

But procedurally it looks horrible. Especially since the Republicans have been harping on about not being allowed to call their witnesses for ages, and now it looks like the Democrats don't want a trial because the Republican witnesses would finally be allowed to testify. It would be like if the Trump DOJ charged Hillary Clinton with a bunch of crimes and then refused to prosecute her, trying to give her the permanent status of an indicted person.
