Francouz letting in more goals in the past 2 games than his previous 6 combined... or in 7 of his previous 8 combined.

Which reminds me how Samsonov used to be so great and now he's, unbelievably, worse than Holtby. Kuemper also lost tonight letting in 3 goals. Mrazek still concussed. Is my fantasy team the goalie graveyard?

Meanwhile, Stalock is quietly playing himself into "actually good" territory the past few weeks. Pretty crazy.

What have I been saying all this time? I refuse to believe, because this is the Wild's M.O. for 10 years.

Unless they actually make the Conference Finals (or even second round to be honest), what else am I supposed to do? I come off as "eternally miserable" because Minnesota teams (in general) are that level of defeatist.

Gophers did great last year, but other than that, I have seen local teams punched in the face for 15-20 years now.

The Detroit Red Wings are so bad...

HOW BAD ARE THEY????

So bad that the gap between them and the second worst team in the league, the Kings (who I must remind you are terrible, have been terrible all year, have never had any designs on not being terrible, and have been actively shipping out their best players all year) is 21 points. That's the largest point gap between teams adjacent to each other in the standings in the entire league (by far, the next closest such gap is at the very top of the standings where the Bruins and Blues are separated by 8 points). That 21 point gap is the same as the gap between the 30th place Kings and the 12th/13th place Leafs and Flames. So the gap separating the Red Wings from second worst in the league is the same as the gap separating second worst in the league from being in the playoffs.

The good news? They haven't quite clinched "worst in the league" just yet. The "magic number" for this is 6 points. Any six points lost by the Red Wings or gained by the Kings clinches 31st place. They will likely hit this threshold sometime next week, with 10+ games remaining in the season. Technically the Sens and Sharks could still finish last overall if they lose out as well, but that's even more unlikely.

One metric of failure they aren't quite leading on (but are close and very well might achieve) is "worst point total compared to themselves last year." As of today, they are 37 points behind where they themselves finished last year. Tampa (39) is technically worse than that as of now, but should almost certainly close the gap. San Jose is also sitting at 39. If the Red Wings can stay within one game of the Sharks from here on out, they'll manage the feat of only being the second worst team in terms of falling off versus their own performance a year ago. Note that last year, they sucked too, and finished 28th in the league.

One thing they have already clinched... they are guaranteed to finish worse than the worst place team in the league last year. Remember how bad last year's Senators were? How they sucked all year and traded away all their decent players at the deadline? They finished with 64 points, a number the Red Wings can no longer reach. Even if they were to win out from here and finish the season on a 14-game winning streak, they'd be worse than last year's Sens.

Muffin: thanks for the Wings stats, those are pretty staggering (I'm sure KnightofNee appreciated them too lol...)

Just realized the Blues are leading (really comfortably leading?) the West despite
-"Stanley Cup hangover" usually being a thing?
-No Tarasenko for almost the entire season... and he'll be back any week now

....meanwhile the Bruins are leading the East. The last thing I want is a rematch of last year (I don't want the Bruins getting that close, fuck the Bruins) but that does seem like having a good chance.

Not really. Adjusting for games in hand, they're only one game up on the Avs. But those two are pretty far up on everyone else.

That said yeah, it IS impressive that the Bruins and Blues are both doing great this year despite deep playoff runs last year.

Ah I was looking at the standings that had Vegas listed in 2nd, thinking they were actually sequentially ordering the teams and not doing the ol' "division leaders top 2". Which doesn't even make sense in the playoff format. And I didn't even look down to 3rd place... why the hell would they list the teams like that...

Well I still don't buy into Colorado making a deep run, even when Francouz was on fire. Before he, uh, was on a different kind of fire the last two games. And Grubauer's not enough either.

The Hurricanes OT game winning goal was the result of a Hurricane stick hitting the puck over a foot above the crossbar. After review it was not overturned.

I'm... Honestly not sure how the NHL replay system continues to be so defunct that it regularly misses such obvious calls. I've been starting to lean towards the building bandwagon that the NHL needs to stop reviewing things at all for a while now. They just can't seem to get it right, and it's making it worse how often they seem to fail.

The Red Wings win against the Blackhawks last night got them to 37 points. Good news! That means they no longer have to worry about matching the lowest point total ever among Red Wings seasons. That honor will still lie with the 1937-38 Detroit Red Wings, who finished with 35.points (in 48 games). Detroit also had a 28 point season when they were Cougars, but it's more fun to only include their 87 seasons as the Red Wings here.

Also, while I was looking over past seasons just now, I just... can we talk about how fucked up the playoff bracketing was back in the late 30's/early 40's? 6 teams made the playoffs, and the matchups were 1st vs 2nd, 3rd vs 4th, and 5th vs 6th. The 3/4 winner would face the 5/6 winner, and then the Stanley Cup Finals would be the winner of the 1/2 matchup against the winner of the 3rd-6th place teams.

Once the league fell to just the original 6 teams, the bracket was still 1 vs 3 and 2 vs 4. It even stayed that way through the 60's expansion. It wasn't until after '71, when Minnesota intentionally lost games to drop from 3rd to 4th and earn an easier first round matchup did anyone realize that this maybe wasn't the best format.

KnightOfNee: out of curiosity I checked the worst PPG season for the Wings and it was an even 0.5 (40 in 80 games) in the 1985-86 season. 17-57-6

Now the Wings are 16-48-5 with 2 SOW. If we knock out 2 points for the shootout wins that'd still be 35 in 69 games. I like your chances to get 7 points in the last 13 games...!

Also can't believe they were so bad with their matchups back then, geez. Huge appeal if you're in 2nd and can't reach 1st to drop down to 3rd...

I like when teams think they can go start their backup against the Wings because it'll be easy and the Wings make them really work for it. Sure they usually end up getting the win in the end but sometimes they don't... like today!

Feel good for those lowly Wings (and Mantha when he produces 4 points for my team, also what I like to see)

Don't forget the tiebreaker is regular season record vs. opponent, so if you tie Great Scott he'll win.

But if you can get past him, you'll be up against me and you have the tiebreaker on me...

(though the funny thing is, the only 2 opponents I'd lose to in a tiebreaker are you and him so I don't have that nice little buffer in the semifinal either way...)

I gotta say, getting the first round bye, I'm feeling like an NFL team that gets a bye and rests all their guys, since I'm rocking 4 DTDs right now... talk about a buffer.

So thinking of the prospects of NHL games being played without crowds and I'm wondering if that's happened before?

The only thing I remember, very fondly, was a few years back when... okay I forget this part. The play by play guys were on strike or something? I forget what channel or how many years ago or how many games it lasted, but I distinctly recall watching one game with no play-by-play or colour commentary, just the sounds of the game and the arena. The sound on the ice was 10x louder, you could feel the crispness, it was so great. I'd take every game like that.

....so I kind of want to believe a crowd-less game would have that kind of ambience, but the broadcast team would still be calling the game, damn.

Damn, I was hoping the NBA suspension was due to infected players but I guess the push for social distancing (and not wanting to lose money playing in front of empty crowds) made this inevitable... I really wanted to watch crowd-less games, damn.

Well I just picked up some more players on the IR... feeling like a fantasy vulture here but hey, maybe some "done for the season" folks will be back now when (if?) things resume.

Same, and uh... I hadn't considered it might just get cancelled entirely. I figured they'd pause it too - resume when the season would? Which I guess might not? Could they just begin the playoffs immediately based on the current standings (while correcting for different #s of games played) or would they be obliged to play out the rest of the regular season? Hope somebody out there's doing some research on potential next case scenarios...

If they do cancel fantasy hockey ideally the league winner is who finished 1st in the regular season... which is also me.

Going to need at least some period of either exhibition games or some sort of build up for reconditioning before starting playoffs.

You'd realistically need at minimum a two week reconditioning period and a two week playing period. Its possible, but at some point you'll compromise the next season trying to save this one if it takes too long.

They'd really have to put things together well.
