I may not have a beautiful wall o' text explaining how Board 8 changed my life for better or for worse, but obviously it has, and charon said it better than I ever could anyway so I'll keep this short: Planning a wedding is hard to do! So I thought why not let Board 8 help? I mean you guys have been instrumental to my life since I joined you during the Game of the Decade 2010 contest almost 10 whole years ago, so maybe B8 can keep on contributing in the future. I've already got vague ideas in mind for the dress, cake, wedding band, and color scheme, but nothing else aside from the time, date, and venue is concrete. A lot can change between now and April 17th, 2020 so if anyone has any suggestions, particularly if you've been down this road before or you want to share your experiences this can be the topic. Thanks in advance for any help, and I love you a-... I love almost all of you!

Yoooo I'm in the floral/decor industry, so any questions you got in that area, just hmu

General advice:
>stick to color instead of feeling the need to select specific flowers [which is an intimidating learning curve that too many clients think they need to master before they even call us]
>bring in a color swatch of bridesmaids' dresses/ribbon for the florist to keep on file
>use Pinterest to organize your preferences on general look and feel
>the better the vendor responds, the better the vendor. You don't want someone who will ghost you as your wedding date approaches.

That is all great advice, thank you. I'll admit I did kind of want to do my favorite flower, but it doesn't even come in my favorite color so I'll stick with the theme instead.

^That's the plan! It's not about how much you spend, but how you spend it. I've already got a friend who has graciously agreed to DJ free of charge (of course we're going to compensate her for her time anyway), and on a similar note I'm working on the wedding playlist a bit today.

Does anyone have any suggestions? If it helps, both charon and I are huge Disney nerds, we love video games, particularly horror and RPG, and both of us like alternative music, though his tastes lean more goth, new age, and industrial, and mine lean more punk, techno, and soft rock.

He's going to help too, but so far we've only locked down 3 songs and I think we need about uh... gee I forget how long the ceremony will last, but let's aim for 50. Better too many than not enough because I'd rather we not have to loop the soundtrack.

I received rave reviews for the playlist from our wedding 2 weeks ago. I'll post the playlist when I get home if I remember. It was super heavy on guilty pleasure songs and some B8 in jokes.

I had 93 songs on the playlist to cover from 6pm to midnight and used almost all.

Some things will not go according to plan or just be flat out wrong. Be prepared to be calm in the face of it and have at least one person by your side who is willing to be a point of contact for vendors on the wedding day to look into any potential issues should something arise. Ideally have it be somebody who is adept at cutting straight to the point of things so that you don't need to be pulled in.

Question: Did any of you guys go with a nice suit instead of a tuxedo for your wedding?

The reason I ask is because a suit seems like a much more practical option than a tux- something I feel like a man only wears 2 or 3 times in his entire life (and charon is too late to wear one for prom night). It's not like we're getting invited to any fancy balls any time soon, and even if we merely RENT the tux it's still bloody expensive. Whereas for roughly the same price I can just buy a nice black suit to have forever instead of just one night. Jason doesn't own a suit if that weighs into your decision. I feel like every man should own a formal black suit. What if someone close to him (god forbid) dies unexpectedly? We'd have to get one anyway eventually. You know... the more I think about it the more I think fuck that tux. We could probably have the suit for $60 or less, and have it tailor-made to fit for like $30 more.

I wore a tux but my groomsman did not.

But honestly if you arent having a very formal ceremony I think a suit would be fine for the groom as well. You could always add a vest to dress it up more.

I wore a suit, all my groomsmen all just needed to match color. We didn't all have the same suit or anything.

I didn't spotify the playlist. I will post it gimme a sec

also yeah super just roll with the punches

Our entrance musics were a disaster and it made things more charming, speaker shut off and then wouldn't reconnect and then phone wasn't listening when the person in charge of that was hitting next and then Cokes swooped in to help

But also my wedding was like the most laid back wedding I have ever been to. I have been to too many where the bride and groom looked so busy. Did not want that.

Some of those are definitely some interesting choices. Jack Sparrow is a great choice though- literally just put a smile on my face. This is our day, we should be able to put whatever we want on the playlist regardless of how "traditional" or "appropriate" it is! Fuck appearances, I wanna have fun.

Man now I'm tempted to put a bunch of Lonely Island and ERB on the set list. Did totally blank on having a dance music section. Welp, guess I'd better add Feel Good, Inc.

Thanks Nick!

Oh for sure it's your day. Do what you want to do 100%.

But part of your day is giving your friends and family a fun event. At least I took it as that. For the reception anyway.

I wouldn't wanna put people through an event they are gonna not enjoy, especially since chances are you will be so busy with social stuff that you won't get as much out of it as they will. I missed a bunch of songs because of thanking people for coming and people coming up and congratulating us. I didn't even really eat because it was non stop lol. I have watched enough of that show on TLC four weddings to see how miserable people look and are at some of the really personal unique weddings.

Our background music was the Lord of the Rings soundtrack.

And my wife came down the aisle to Arwens Vigil played by The Piano Guys.

My best friend actually used a symphony recording playing FFX for a lot of their background music. Another friend used legend of zelda.

Music is definitely an area where you can make it your own.

Two must-haves for me: open bar and a good DJ/playlist. Probably third is the cake. My ex and I had three tiered cake, each one a different flavor. The photographer was a quirky newbie so it wasn't super expensive and we had all of the usual photos and some fun ones too. That was before everyone had an amazing camera in their pockets.

Oh man the cake is huge. We got this crazy awesome one with four different layers and everyone still tells me how great it was. That and the food! Family style/buffet are super awesome alternatives to a plated dinner that can cost less. We had family style and people loooved it. Oh and dont forget to eat! Our venue tacked on cookies with a monogram/initial of our family name as part of the dessert bar, which is edible. Best way to go if you can't settle on a useful item, and a lot of American wedding guests just leave favors behind.

For dinner/bgm, we created a selection of instrumental music or adaptations from anime and video games [e.g., Smooth McGroove, Walt Ribeiro, HarpTwins]. The result was that most people enjoyed but didn't recognize the music. The table and a half that did were laughing when they recognized the different tracks.
