i will add that teams really need to try something different on onside kicks

kickers need to practice kicking hard low line drives at players and hoping it hits them and takes a bounce back towards your team

Don't see how that would work even in a surprise situation. You're either kicking the ball with enough force that, worst case scenario, the players get down/out of the way and let it go out of bounds, or it goes downfield too far where the kicking team has no chance to recover.

I don't see why the NFL doesn't have a rule to re-allow running starts specifically for onside attempts though.

Edit: I guess I didn't consider that you can set the ball on it's side when teeing it up, but I imagine that would tip the recovering team off as to what was about to take place.

And just before the all-time skins vs phins classic, 0-5 vs 0-4 coming off a bye week.

Better to fire him now than let him get a win which delays the firing... or suffer the ignominy of losing that matchup.

Wonder if anyone in the suicide league will touch that one.

there's always someone that gives into the temptation of taking a godawful team when facing an even worse one to save more good teams for later. or the opposite scenario, where they've already used all the big favorites so they have no choice but to take a big gamble.

Kinda where I'm feeling teams right now, did this exercise without worrying if I had X number of playoff teams.

Nothing but Confidence they are a major threat
Patriots

Right now I'd say these teams, have a shot to make the playoffs and at least win a playoff game
Packers
Vikings
Lions
Eagles
Cowboys
Saints
Rams
Seahawks
Browns
Ravens
Texans
Colts
Chiefs

Teams I'd list that are close but need something dynamic to change or a rookie to make next step/keep growing
Giants
Bears
Panthers
49ers
Jaguars
Titans
Bills
Raiders
Chargers
Broncos

No Hopers
Cardinals
Bucs
Falcons
Redskins
Bengals
Steelers
Jets
Dolphins

Yeah its kinda unreal

W8 Browns (if they arent having another rollercoaster week)
W9 Ravens (the better the team, the quieter they get)
W11 Eagles (??? who knows what this team will be injury wise by then)
W12 Cowboys (they will be dead by here)
W13 Texans (First test guaranteed)
W14 Chiefs (Now an asterisk game only cause Mahomes status will be a lingering question all year)

Thats really it, thats kinda nuts

The Bills have a defense that can win them a playoff game. I don't know that I trust Josh Allen in a big playoff road game (because it will have to be a road game).

Still, putting them so low is silly. Also, putting the Bucs in the "No hopers" tier is silly, and I don't even like the Bucs. They're way better than every other team in that tier.

honestly i think the steelers week 1 blowout makes them a bit underrated. They are too far behind to make the playoffs id imagine, but a 2 pt loss vs Seattle, 4 @ SF, and 3 vs Balt. If one of those games goes differently they are 2-3 and not nearly as fucked. Still needing at least the rest of october to get to .500 just doesnt compute for them.

I never understood the "NFL is a marathon" people. Its seems more like a sprint to me with only 16 games and losing 2 in a row rarely means playoffs

Eh, the NFL is certainly less of a marathon than the other major sports, but we see a team start 0-2 and make the playoffs nearly every year. Not sure who would be the contender to do that so far this year. Maybe Carolina? The NFC is a tough conference this year though, and they're not as good as the Saints, with or without a healthy Cam.

I just don't think the Steelers have a very good offense this year. People acted like you could lose Bell and just replace him with any old guy and things would be pretty much the same, but that's not true. Conner has done fine, but he's no Bell. Losing Brown obviously hurts them (at least on the field), too.

Teams that have done it since 2007:

2018 Seahawks, Texans

2017 Saints

2016 Dolphins

2015 Texans, Seahawks

2014 Colts

2013 Panthers

2009-12 None

2008 Chargers, Dolphins, Vikings

2007 Giants

So we had a four year stretch where no one did, but it's happened 8 of the last 12 seasons and multiple teams on a few occasions.

ah you got it from that denver post article. In the past 24 seasons, 205 teams have started a season 0-2. Of those teams, 24 have managed to qualify for the postseason. So that it enough for 1 a season i suppose, but its a low ass chance.

Usually losing 2 in a row in the nfl means you dont make the playoffs id imagine. Its definitely a sprint.

Well, obviously most teams who start 0-2 in a season don't do it. Most of those teams turn out to just be bad teams rather than merely unlucky ones. A pretty low percentage of the teams in the NFL make it in the playoffs to begin with, after all, but if you're actually a good team, you can recover from it.

I would be super interested in the flip side of this stat, actually - how many playoff teams each year lose back to back games? The normal stat would be sort of interesting too I guess.

My intuition says that starting 0-2 says a lot more about playoff chances than back-to-back losses at any other point in the season, but I fully acknowledge that makes no logical sense, there are a ton of other factors in play, and I can't back it up.

The ravens should of lost to the Steelers probably. Their defense is not good, and they will need teams to stupidly not gameplan around Lamar running the football.

The afc north is shaping up to be dogshit tbh.

Well, the point is that your chances of making the playoffs aren't 50/50 like in basketball or hockey. Plus, there are only two wild card teams per league, so if you start slow, that's probably what you're playing for unless you're just in a terrible division.

Yeah, Baltimore is good enough to make it to 9-7 or 10-6. They've still got 2 games against the Bengals ahead of them, as well as a game against the Jets.

The real question is are the Niners for real? I'm still not sure!
