Republican official, Reagan Dunn says he has an idea on how to get rid of 1000 homeless people out of Seattle..by buying them one way BUS TICKETS and sending them OUT OF TOWN!!

He wants to solve the crisis by spending 1 million to expand a strategy to get the people off the streets by kicking them out of the city and said the concept was to send them back to where they're "from" as the concept has been around for decades in parts of the US struggling to get people off the streets

The city of Seattle and community organizations already offer free bus tickets as part of their broader approach to homelessness as Reagan says he wants to go further by creating a stand alone bus ticket program that will emphaize "family reunification"

He proposed this to merging the services to better combat rising homelessness in areas dominated by tech companies like Amazon where income inequality and housing prices skyrocketed, a pattern in west coast cities

Dunn wants to target 1000 people who he claims said want to reconnect with their families elsewhere

Seattle officials says its diversion program allows people to determine how they can best help themthrough deposit money for rental housing, car repairs or finding a wayto return home for long term support if it's "safe and realistic solution"

Dunn represents a WEALTHY suburbu in Bellevue and his program would be better funded and promoted than the city's piecemeal approach

He said "We have the highest homeless rate per capita because we're promoting failed policies. We don't need more government to promote Seattle-centri policties"

An investigation by the Guardian revealed how cities failed to properly track the people who were sent away or banned them from using public services such as shelters or case managers if they returned after taking a one way ticket out of town as people have gone MISSING.

Dunn maintains that his proposal is a "good place to start" and that it's better to ship these people away to other cities so they can make their areas "attractive" again.

Do you support bussing homeless people out to other cities??.

See, they're not thinking long-term enough. What they need to do is update their passports THEN buy them bus tickets all the way into Canada, at which point Canada might feel obliged to help them.

Ca did this years ago and sent my brother back to Reno, where he stayed for awhile before coming back to CA (La actually). He ended up on goverment disability and was able to get a room and live there, no clue how that all worked, didn't talk to him much during that time (and he died 4-5 years ago now).

Anyway heard they were still doing it, and it was in the papers or something before I left like 3 years ago to move to WA. Think they also were shipping prisoners as well as the prisons were so overcrowded.

I always thought it was kinda evil of CA to just ship their homeless to other states. Like, here you deal with them, lol.

While I dont think this is a great idea, I also dont think most of the people in this topic read the details. It isnt just Lets send this homeless dude to Sacramento, hes their problem now! Its about sending people to locations where they have family, which would be a better situation than they are in now.

Its too dependent on the family being able to take them in and actually help them get back on their feet, but for people who actually have situations like this where they simply cannot afford to leave the city, it would be a better situation than they are currently in.

Ultimately, Seattle needs to devise a way to reduce the causes of homelessness.

I know most people are immediately condemning him as not doing anything but isnt most homelessness because they cant afford to move somewhere where family can help them or somewhere they can get a job or a place which is more affordable?

Yaknow, if that were the actual case then this would be an actual good.

...

What's that phenomenon where people are living in dying coal mine towns and can no longer afford to leave? It's kinda like that.

My initial naive thought was "giving the homeless free access to public transit would really increase their opportunity to work and better themselves" and it took about 2 seconds of thought before I realized where this was actually going.

Wow that was a pretty dumb thing to say.

So there was a time when there were no homeless people?

I wouldn't mind this in theory. As someone else mentioned, there may be homeless Americans who just need help going somewhere else. So if this was something the state did to help homeless people find jobs and shelter in cheaper areas I would approve. But seems like a waste of money to just move people randomly out and hope for the best.

In most cases the reason people are homeless is because they have no family, really shitty family, or the homeless person really screwed their family over and they have disowned the homeless person. Now are their exceptions to this sure, but if their family really wanted to take them in, I doubt the barrier is a fucking bus ticket to where the family is at. Since the family member could buy them a ticket in quite a few cases.
