The Portuguese sub translated "ultimate" to "super duper". I get it that ultimate doesn't translate directly into Portuguese, but I can think of at least three less dumb ways to do it, including keeping it as "ultimate". Makes the remnants look like clowns.

I don't know if that's better or worse than "super high school level"

Yeah, that's how the very first English DR fans experienced DR1 and 2. Some of the character titles are also different from the official translation. The translator said he chose that because the original Japanese prefix is also intentionally goofy and sounds like something a kid would say.

Despair 1

Chisa (the Ultimate Housekeeper) is here, to make up for the fact she died in Future Arc. She is so good of a teacher it reminds me of Korosensei. It's gonna be interesting to see her failing to save every single one of her students from being corrupted. And that makes for a pretty tragic story, too.

The DR2 cast is mostly the same.

Fuyu's Japanese VA is cool, it reminds me of Mondo's Enlgish one. Sounds a lot more like a gangster, though that is not necessarily a better fit considering who he really is.

Nagito is a lot more cheerful and that confuses me because I thought the simulation was supposed to portray them before they went to HPA? I think I'll read his free time events to see if I missed anything.

Imposter has an actual name and isn't actually copycatting Byakuya. He is also really shy. Also he's the Ultimate Animator, for some reason?

Chiaki is a real person and is part of the DR2 class. I'm gonna guess she'll die at some point and have the virtual version remade after the living one. She also seems to have a crush on Hajime, who is apparently a huge gaming nerd too.

Gundham has an evil lair, and I approve.

Nekomaru and Akane are greatly helped by the setting, so that we can really see them showing their athletical skills. Neko shat so hard in the bathroom he broke the wall, while Akane basically flies.

Not much to add, this cast is not very different from what we saw in DR2. Even the Kazuichi x Sonia one-sided ship is the same.

In the end we learn that Chisa, Ultimate Boxer, and the Mirai Vice-President (Ultimate Council Room President) were best friends.

Fun little episode. We have yet to see Junko, or anyone from the DR1 cast (assuming they'll even appear). This is gonna be gud.

Ok so I read Nagito's free time dialogue.

Damn. It seems he is cursed to have a stroke of extreme bad luck, followed by good luck, over and over. His parents are dead, but he is a millionaire. But he has terminal cancer and dementia. So it makes sense that he decided to end his life by giving it all to create the Ultimate Hope. Because his luck can just get him there. And look, it may have worked out in the end, since the DR2 cast did some impossible things.

So I guess Nagito is cheerful in Despair arc because he hasn't come across an opportunity to create havoc yet, which he got in the DR2 game. He'll probably get one soon though, thanks to our friend Junko.

Im really interested in these anime reviews, because to be honest, Ive retained very little from those episodes. I remember the big items, but not a lot in between.

Future 2

Okay, I officially hate this show. Killing Hina is low. I get it that DR is about death, but ruining previous games' payoff by murdering whoever survived in them feels like pissing the viewer off just for the sake of doing it.

Boxer continues to be a terrible character. He accidentally gets Farmer killed because he can't stop punching everyone he sees in front of him. He tried to punch Hina because she disagreed with him, then the new kid defended her, and he punched him instead. Then Farmer dies because not seeing violence is the restriction of his poisonous wristband.

The wristband thing is clever, because it provides a gazilillion of murder methods.

Therapist was the one who created Monomi, and she moves around in a car with a Monomi screen because she's shy. Cool character.

Baker and Blacksmith have a cute romance. It's gonna be sad to see it get ruined.

Wrestler continues to be awesome.

This setup is different from the usual DR one and offers a lot of possibilities, but I'm afraid we might not get the usual detective work because Boxer and Vice-President can't do any thinking besides "KILL MAKOTO !!!!1!!1". Only Kyoko can save us now.

The opening says there are 15 surviving characters, but I counted 14 after Housekeeper died. Are they counting Hiro too? Even though he's outside...

It's stilll a decent show, but they really did not have to kill Hina. Meh.

So Hina got killed inside a barricaded place, where the only people where Makoto, Wrestler and Therapist. So the last two are the only suspects. Or are they?

Are we going to get an investigation or will we just watch Makoto running away from Boxer and VP until the next kill?

Despair 2

Chisa is secretely spying on HPA along with VP-kun. They suspect the school is plotting something with the Reserve Course. She approaches Hajime to see if she can learn anything about it, but as he's right about to spill the beans on the whole surgery plan, she decides to lecture him instead and leaves. Chisa is a great teacher but a terrible spy.

The president from Future Arc approaches Hajime and tells him maybe he should just be normal. Later on Chiaki invites him for some gaming. I'm guessing Chiaki's death is what will break him and get him to accept the program.

Teruteru teams up with Ultimate Pharmacist to make potions or whatever. He gives one to Akane and she turns into Adult Gon from HunterxHunter. Okay.

The class cannot unite, so Chiaki steps up and invites them to play games. They play Smash, Mario Kart, Bomberman and Mario Party. And they invite Nagito to play Mario Party.

I repeat: they invite Nagito to play Mario Party.

Teruteru makes anazing curry, and Hiyoko ruins it by dripping Teruteru's love potion into it. Hilarity ensues. Kazuichi tries to use the chance to make a move on Sonia but is stopped by Fuyu. Mikan makes a move on Peko's sword. Yeah.

The Four Devas who also drank the potion are in love with Gundham, lol.

Teruteru almost rapes Hiyoko. I'm not making this up. But Chiaki stops with with a move she saw in Double Dragon 2.

Chiaki is now the class representative, because she is less dumb than most.

A little better than the Future one in terms of music, but still somewhat uneventful. I guess the highlight is Junko and Mukuro getting ready to wreck some shit.

Also I just noticed the future one has dad versions of all the characters. Hadn't notoced that before. Wonder if it changed since the Despair one also changed to include Chiaki.

Hina lives. Phew. It was a fake knife and blood.

But Wrestler is dead. Godanmit. The awesome ones always go down first.

Therapist is the only suspect, and Recruiter even voted for her as the killer, so she's probably the curve ball.

Hina must not be punched or kicked. If Boxer dude had actually managed to get to her, he woud have gotten both her and Farmer killed. Idiot. Makoto's restriction is pretty harsh, too. He cannot run.

Kyoko lampshades how the traitor will have a hard time surviving if there are too few players left. Strange how nobody mentioned that in previous games. Then again, Junko managed to be absent from the main crew in both of them, so it worked. I wonder what the plan is now.

Makoto made the most Makoto speech ever. Well, someone has to be the Makoto in these shows. Extreme pessisism doesn't win wars. Hope does.

Pharmacist turned into a medusa monster after taking some drugs, and started chasing people around. What.

VP is a cool character, but he is not being rational here. There is nothing to be gained by slicing Makoto with a sword. Meanwhile, Kyoko is doing the actual detective work. This extended cast is pretty pathetic compared to DR1 and DR2's ones. Or maybe the previous two worked because they were forced to participate in trials, and this one isn't.

And of course, Boxer-kun is trying to stop Kyoko from investigating. Because that will totally help you when the sleeping gas kicks in again and the traitor murders your ass. Idiot.

Calling it: the traitor is either Recruiter, or the New Kid. The former is certainly hiding something, the later is so innocent he's possibly hiding a dark side.

Despair 3

We meet Fuyuhiko's sister, as well as Girl E (I know she has a name but imma call her Girl E).

When they are around, the song that plays is the one from the videogame in 2-2. Nice touch.

Fuyu's sister wants to kill Mahiru to take her place in the Main Course. Just so we are reminded she deserved it when she dies later. Also we learn that the three hail from the same photography club, and Fuyu's sister is jealous of Mahiru's talent.

I like Mahiru, but she seems much more passive here than in DR2. I miss the GEEEEEEZ.

Fuyu's sister is not that bad, she just doesn't want to be left behind by Fuyu and Mahiru. They should have noticed separating Main and Reserve Courses was a bad idea.

She wishes to be the Ultimate Little Sister, but there is no such role. Well, maybe someone tell the headmaster about this, and he'll create one! It's not like there are huge restrictions for what the Ultimate roles can be.

Girl E and Fuyu's sister are dead. Hajime wants to investigate. But unfortunately for him, Boxer-kun is in this show too, and he is as much of an asshole here as he is in the other one. He plays his part in causing the Tragedy by beating the crap out of Hajime and telling him is is garbage for having no talent.

So Boxer-kun is spying on the school alongside Chisa, and he was just protecting Hajime. But protecting by inflicting psychological trauma is not a good idea, dude.

Hajime doesn't want to play vidya gaems with Chiaki anymore. He wants to become a guina pig in illegal brain surgeries instead. Nice job breaking it, Boxer-Kun.

DR3 should have been named "Why Boxer-kun is worse than Junko".

But everyone is worse than Junko

Last we saw, Wrestler had been murdered, Hina had not been murdered, Boxer was trying to stop Kyoko from investigating who the traitor is, VP was trying to slice Makoto in two because he's a better protagonist than VP, New Guy was learning the meaning of friendship, President was having difficulty carrying all his death flags around with his old body, Blacksmith and Baker were trying to find a safe place to fuck, Monster Pharmacist was trying to stop them from fucking but probably wanted to join too, Therapist was thinking what else she had to do to become Professor X, Recruiter was muttering something about keikakus, and Hiro was still outside, dodging bullets fired by an helicopter that was probably piloted by a stormtrooper.

Boxer-kun just tried to hit an elderly citizen with a chair. Because his kill count is never high enough.

The elderly citizen is a badass. Sorry, Wrestler, you are not my favorite new character anymore.

VP is an asshole like Boxer, but he has a brain. He figured out the bad guy's plan pretty well. And it's a good plan. It employs Makoto as a tool instead of trying to beat him.

Kyoko has started investigating. Now the plot can finally move.

Baker, Blacksmith and Pharmacist and dealing with their high school issues. Perfect timing.

President has the coolest weapon. And he can throw like a street fighter character. Wish Chiaki could see this.

Therapist has missiles. Take that, Professor X.

President is almost dead, after throwing himself and VP from the upper floor and getting impaled into a metal bar. Nice try old man, but your badassery could not overcome VP's superior plot relevance.

Therapist is a robot, and is being controlled by a green-haired Junko from afar. I did not expect this.

Despair 4

The class is filled with despair. I'm gonna guess the reason is the Mahiru plot. I didn't think it would play such a big part in the Tragedy, but it makes sense. A double murder in a real life school would scar the students for life.

Nagito wants to see the school exams bringing Hope out of the students. In the absence of murders, that's what Nagito can use. I wonder if he would kill himself for exams.

Fuck, he's planning something. That's Nagito for you.

The episode is named "The melancholy, surprise and disappearance of Nagito Komaeda". Never a dull moment with this guy.

Chiaki is sad her crush is not around to play Nantendo with her.

Nagito's plan, once again, begins with Teruteru. By bribing him with Sayaka pictures. Effective.

We get to see how the plot with Pharmacist and Baker happened. Turns out Baker is a manipulative bitch. Amazing how even in Despair Arc, the cast from Future Arc keeps getting worse.

Nagito picked the wrong med, believing his luck would get him to get the right one. He got the performance enhancer Baker wanted. She got Nagito's laxative. This is gonna be fun.

There is a bomb, and threats on the wall. Smells like someone we know.

Nagito bumps into pharmacist and accidentally trades his identical bag with her. This is gonna be fun

Final score: Baker gave laxatives to a bunch of judges and got expelled. Pharmacist accidentally made a bomb threat, and got expelled. Blacksmith randomly tried to threaten people with knives, and got expelled. Nagito got bumped by a dog who drank his drugs and helped him realize it was not laxative before it was too late. The dog then became giant, rushed into the gym and activated the bomb, making Naguito's plan work all along. Yay!

The headmaster decides not to expel Nagito because he is excited by his Luck. He also decides to punish Chisa by transferring her to the secondary course. Suddenly there is a bunch of karma in that scene where he is killed in a rocket.

Nagito is a magnificent bastard.

Also that trio of Baker-Pharmacist-Blacksmith are just...miserable. I don't know how they can make three bad characters and put them together in an unholy trinity. At least Teruteru was a lone agent.

Baker, Pharmacist and Blacksmith are childhood friends. What are the odds three kids from the same neighboorhood end up becoming ultimates? Then again, in my college, the classroom of 40 had two guys from the same 10k people town from another state, so it can happen.

Plot hole: Pharmacist revealed way back she couldn't eat sugar. Fast forward to Despair Arc and Baker hates her because she doesn't want to try her sweets. Well, probably not a plot hole, just Baker being an asshole.

Blacksmith knows his shit. This fight might be good, after all.

President used to kick even more ass. But he probably wasn't trying to kill VP in their fight.

Boxer-kun resumes his chase of Makoto. Will this asshole finally die?

Hina is challenging Boxer to a fight even though she knows she'll die in the first hit. I need to update my DR1 character list some time.

I'm suddenly happy for Hiro showing up because I think it may actually improve the average quality of this cast. Yeah.

Pharmacist just overdosed and now she is about to kill Baker. I hope succeeds.

"When did everything go so wrong?" When you guys bumped into Nagito. It's always Nagito.

Green Hair is just having a good time. I can relate. I wish we could see DR1 from Junko's PoV, it might have been pretty fun too.

President reveals something. The identity of the traitor? The Foundation's big secret? The key to defeat Despair once and for all? Then he shows his wristband and reveals it's a lie detector! He knows shit and he can prove it! VP will finally start moving the plot now! He will...

...oh never mind he killed President anyway. Idiot.

The fucker lost his eye, at least. Shame the samer can't happen to Boxer or Baker. Or everyone who did not originally appear in DR1, tbh.

Either Pharmacist or Baker is about to die, imo. Hope it's Baker.

It's Pharmacist. There is no way this show was going to kill the shitty character first and let the more interesting one live.

I'm actually enjoying this show, but it's bordering on "So Bad It's Good" at this point. I'm just hoping the Foundation characters die and the DR1 ones make it.

Also just noticed most episodes have post-credits scenes. The latest one is the most interesting. VP is doing drugs. Also apparently Chisa wanted to go to the Secondary Course to investigate it. Too bad the most important thing about the Sec. Course already happened.

I forgot how bad the Future Arc characters were. Probably because they all did nothing and died, except for three of them. I will say, I'm okay with Boxer by the end and he had my favorite moments in the Future Arc easily. He's still an idiotic dick right now.

We see the childhood of Imposter. Or Animator. Not sure.

Timeskip. Apparently a bunch of shenanigans happened during Chisa's 6 months as a teacher, but who cares about that (I do, I love shenanigans!). Most important, though, is that she has a lead.

I just realized, this Kamukura project is what President mentioned in the last chapter. So he still thought the Hajime thing will work. And it did, in a way no one could have expected! Interesting.

Chisa: "Do you remember that kid you assaulted 6 months ago?" Boxer: "Be more specific, bitch, I assault people all the time."

Nagito is missing. I don't know what is more dangerous: having Nagito around, or not knowing where he is.

So the DR1 cast is about to join the school life. That explains why they were missing: they are one year younger. I wonder if they will get any lines.

Chisa is incredibly precious. I wish she could just live a happy teacher life, instead of this nightmare her life turns into later on.

The DR2 class is happy and hopeful again. It will take more than a couple deaths to break their spirit. Pink Hitler can do it, though.

They stayed together because Best Girl Chiaki was with them. Of course.

Hiyoko grew half a meter in 6 months. Because.

Sonia is now Gundham's sidekick. I approve.

Oh so the Animator we were seeing was not Imposter. It was some other kid, and the Animator who is in school is just... Imposter. Damn, the dude is good.

Pink Hitler arrives. And with an entrance: she bombs a cab in the middle of daylight. Someone call the Avengers. The Justice League. The Power Rangers. This bitch is more dangerous than Joker and Thanos combined.

Mukuro appears. She is now a character instead of just an overly repeated name.

Junko and Mukuro's dynamic is great. At first is old fashioned bullying like what we saw with Baker/Pharmacist, but it works because one is batshit crazy and the other is a badass.

Animator is overworking himself to death. Very realistic portrayal of mangakas.

So Imposter couldn't imitate Byakuya anymore because the later was going to join the school. He needed a new person to become, and a socially disturbed mangaka showed up. He lent his bedroom in exhange of becoming the mangaka. Bunch of fuck ups, I tell ya.

Imposter was nice to Mikan and she's now crying. Eh... is it just me or Mikan's "beloved" is actually... Imposter?

Makoto enters the school, and the Tragedy is about to begin! As narrated and 4th-wall broken by Junko.

She has the Monokuma laugh, too. Cool.

So despite my Mikan bashing, I will say that the one thing the DR3 anime does well is make me kind of care about Mikan with the Mikan/Impostor arc

I've been thinking how is it that this bunch of morons made it to the top brass of Future Foundation, when it hit me: chances are everyone in FF are stupid jerks.

When Chisa first arrived in the DR2 class, she learns classes are not mandatory, and students are encouraged to just spend all day pursuing their own interests until exam day. Well, that's the recipe to create anti-social people. You spend 3 years locked in a lab, doing the same thing over and over, and when you get out, you'll be incapable of socializing, or solving any problems not related to your specific skill. So Boxer only knows how to punch people. Baker only knows how to make sweets. And so on.

This is ironic because in real life, everyone is talking about how kids need to learn soft skills: creativity, teamwork, leadership, emotional intelligence. Because if you only know the technical stuff, a computer will replace you. HPA would be considered a bad examplein real life, maybe. It does tackle the problem many schools have about being too standardized and having too long class hours, but it goes too much in the opposite direction. In Danganronpa's world, everyone is obssessed about individual talent, to the point they let that talent end the world.

People with better social skills are doing something else perhaps.

The opening shows 10 people alive. Did they suddenly decide not to count Therapist or is someone else dead?

VP is remembering when he wanted to stop the school from doing what the school ended up doing anyway. Sorry VP, you were not protagonist enough to win this.

Hey VP, shouldn't you use your sword as a funeral prop after you are done slashing people with it? Just a thought.

Wait, Kyoko got off-paneled? What the fuck? There is a fake out here, isn't it. Oh nvm it's a nightmare.

If the count is right the remaining corpse is Boxer, Baker or Blacksmith. It's profit no matter where you look at.

Recruiter-kun is an interesting character. Not much more than that. But he could become really good later.

Blacksmith. They still killed the least crappy character available. The worst ones keep surviving.

As always, Case 3 is a double murder.

I just noticed one character is being executed after each murder. But for dumb reasons. First Farmer, then President.

How to force kids to execute each other: DR1: enforce class trials. DR2: enforce class trials. DR3: lock up a sufficiently bad cast in a building.

Monomo talking about the Power of Hope while Green Junko types maniacally on her keyboard is amazing. DR2 did not use the chance to make Monomi evil. DR3 did, and it's great.

President, you are supposed to write 11037 in blood, not letters.

Byakuya appears! Please Byakuya, save us from this terrible cast!

So VP is attacking Jabberwork Island. But Byakuya is trying to defend it. I'd love if VP's fleet got there and ran into the fully recovered DR2 cast. Neko and Akane breaking things, Gundham sending ninja hamsters and Nagito just making meteors fall into his ships or something.

Real!Therapist is dead, and Byakuya already knows it. But he didn't reveal that to Makoto because of his 4D chess. Amazing.

We see Toko, and Makoto's sisters, the UDG protagonists. Sister is tasked with the ingrate task of giving Toko a shower. They are both saved from it by a call from Byakuya.

The fleet is approaching the island, but Darth Hajime is there to protect it. Red eye and everything.

I watched V3's opening out of curiosity, btw. It's cool. It's less metal than DR2, but that's a nice change of pace. Also I see there is a female protagonist, hope she is less bland than the first two.

I LOVE Kaede.

I hope by the end of the anime you're in the mood to get back to enjoying Dangan Ronpa as a game.
