Today I tried their tomato mozzarella chicken sandwich, from Canada, and it tasted like I was eating a leaf with some chicken hiding under it, and I also got their cheesy bacon fries, from Australia, which tasted godawful! Its like someone decided to make chili cheese fries before they realized they were out of chili, and they used terrible cheese too!

I wanted to try their stroopwafle McFlurry, from the Netherlands, but they were out of ice cream, but judging by these two I probably spared my tastebuds some more pain.

On the plus side I did try the double grand McExtreme bacon burger, from Spain, the last time I went to McDonalds and found that to be enjoyable, but I could just get a better bacon burger by getting a western pretty much everywhere.

seriously....it's like a running gag at this point that anytime you go to mcdonalds chances are the ice cream machine's busted

and honestly i doubt the stropwafle mcflurry would have been that bad(it's basically little waffle cone like chunks in ice cream right?)

but back to my main thing...most of the time it almost feels like they just don't want to bother cleaning the ice cream machine more so than it's actually broken

so they just say it's broken....to keep from having to clean the thing and using it

Nearly every single McDonalds and certainly the ones abroard from North America may have different standards of food production as they actually run by people who are using the name and menu rather than being fully controlled by McDonadls themselves. Even in this country a McDonalds further down the street may have worse tasting food to the one you just past earlier on. Well technically there all bad over here but some are worse lol.

I was interested when I first heard what they were doing with the favorites menu. But I was disappointed when I saw what they were offering. I had hoped for stuff that you wouldn't expect to find on a typical American menu. But everything they offer seems like average American fast food.

Not even. You can get a sense of a region's cuisine by making their food yourself, or going to a quality restaurant somewhere else. McD's is neither of those.

Both I guess, but then I learned "stroop" is unique to Dutch and English has no separate word for a thicker kind of syrup. But yes, I would expect either "Stroopwafel" or "(Thick) Syrup Waffle".

If you follow a recipe, you can definitely cook something to taste like it does in wherever its from. Cooking is based on taste and upbringing. But thats usually for cooking without a recipe, or without following a strict recipe. So, I think adjl is right about being able to get a sense of a regions cuisine by making it yourself. Even if it doesnt taste exactly the same, its might be similar enough to just get a sense of it...

For that matter, even if it's catered toward local tastes, a decent restaurant can still mirror the real thing closely enough to get a sense of the cuisine, especially if you're in an area with enough immigrants from that region to create a market for something genuine. It won't be exactly what the locals would eat, no, but it'll give you enough of an idea to let you form an opinion. That's all that's really necessary if you're looking to explore a bit, unless you're looking to understand the cuisine in greater depth (i.e. to be able to open your own restaurant based on that theme).

As far as cooking yourself goes, though, it is worth noting that regional availability of ingredients can result in different final products. To use this topic's example of stroopwafels, I believe making a genuine one usually calls for using treacle in the filling. Outside of Europe, treacle can be hard to come by, so recipes will suggest molasses instead. Of course, making stroopwafels at home also requires you to have a waffle iron that can make waffle cones and then cutting those waffles in half horizontally (making two thin halves), so that's enough of a pain that buying them is generally preferable.
