For that matter, even if it's catered toward local tastes, a decent restaurant can still mirror the real thing closely enough to get a sense of the cuisine, especially if you're in an area with enough immigrants from that region to create a market for something genuine. It won't be exactly what the locals would eat, no, but it'll give you enough of an idea to let you form an opinion. That's all that's really necessary if you're looking to explore a bit, unless you're looking to understand the cuisine in greater depth (i.e. to be able to open your own restaurant based on that theme). As far as cooking yourself goes, though, it is worth noting that regional availability of ingredients can result in different final products. To use this topic's example of stroopwafels, I believe making a genuine one usually calls for using treacle in the filling. Outside of Europe, treacle can be hard to come by, so recipes will suggest molasses instead. Of course, making stroopwafels at home also requires you to have a waffle iron that can make waffle cones and then cutting those waffles in half horizontally (making two thin halves), so that's enough of a pain that buying them is generally preferable. --- This is my signature.
