I like in the park to play a Disney princess you have to naturally look like whichever Disney princess youre cast as (Cinderella has to be a natural blonde, same eye color, etc). One of my wifes friends played Bell for a year or so and they were anal retentive about the details

On one hand, I don't know if the Little Mermaid will be as iconic as she has been in the past - we've seen a good handful of movies that have been robbed of their sentimentality and power through lackluster performances, i.e. Beauty and the Beast. This is the one casting choice I'm not really sure about in Disney's live action movies, especially since they've been flushing their renaissance-era remakes down the toilet for years. I'm hoping this actress can pull off a once-in-a-lifetime performance here, but I don't really have hope overall considering how watered down, milquetoast and lame Disney's live-action remakes have been so far. Will this be an unabashedly emotional performance? I would like to hope so, but having never heard Halle Bailey's material before, I'm in the dark here. Prior Disney remakes tell me that this might just be another phoned in product, but I hope this actress gives the role everything she's got.

With that being said, anyone who's criticising the casting choice by going "I can't say black people are ruining movies without being called a racist!" is a fucking chump.

To be fair the ocean is huge and if you wanted to work for the king of it you could come from anywhere to work there. Now what you do have to work on is that it seemed near to Prince Eric's homeland as she first saw him on his boat when he was coming home, and took him to shore where he was found by his subjects. Based on what we know with the Catholic priest, the French chef, the clothing,etc his home land was in or around the North Sea most likely. So Atlantis most likely is based around that area as well. I could be wrong of course but it seems logical from the stuff in the movie.

Why is it these days bad casting doesnt seem to exist and whenever an actor doesnt visually match up to the character they are playing as its thought of as a new modern alternative reimagining?

Flash Thompson doesnt look anything like he should in the new Spider-Man movies either. Marvel nailed it with the Avengers. You cant get an actor closer to comic book Tony Stark than Robert Downey Jr. but then they screwed up the supporting cast of characters from the Spider-Man comics.
