reminds me of when I was a little kid playing Power Rangers with my friends at recess, lol.

we'd role play and I was usually Tommy. I was around 8 years old and a blue belt. so not only could I perform flashy moves, but I was in the best physical shape in my class, the 2nd fastest kid in school, and other athletic advantages you could expect from an 8 year old blue belt in TKD over the average kid.

but there were always a couple fat White kids who objected and kept trying to make me be Zack. he was my 2nd fave, but he was assigned to another buddy lol.

they were like "Tommy isn't Mexican." literally my skin was going to be the qualifier, lol. every other qualifications fell further back in priority.

I guess that's why I was already used to people over emphasising race before I was even an adult.

You know what's sad about this whole thing?

People completely ignore who Halle Bailey is. It's as if the only thing that matters about her is that she's black.

I only heard good things about her, and it seems she has a beautiful singing voice. What if she ends up delivering an amazing performance? Are people just going to ignore it because of her race?

I'm willing to bet a lot of people who are pissed off about her being in the movie may just end up loving it once it comes out and then come back and deny they were ever against her being in the role.

Hopefully.

People pissed and moaned for months about Beauty and the Beast having a gay character and when the movie came out nobody cared anymore.

But, wait a minute. This means King Triton (or Ariel's deceased mother) and Ariel's sisters will have to be black as well. Or will Ariel be an adopted child?

No need to. People will be discussing it upon release. Besides, I already know the story (both the happy one made up by disney as well as the tragic original one).

How many actors have played Spider-Man? Or Batman? They all looked different from each other. Why is skin color so important to the racists on this board? I know it's because they're racist, but I thought I'd ask.

When has there ever been a black Bruce Wayne or Peter Parker?

Miles Morales was Marvels way of having a black kid be Spider-Man without changing the race of Peter Parker. Id welcome Miles Morales being Spider-Man in a movie, but Id be offended if they cast the actor that should be Miles Morales but called the character Peter Parker instead.

My point is that there are countless physical attributes, and skin color is not inherently more important than any of them. I don't know enough about Batman to know if race plays a major role in his universe and thusly shaped who he is, but I know damn well skin color is no more important in the Little Mermaid universe than the difference between Keaton and Kilmer's chin height is in the Batman universe.

Cant a white character just be white and stay white without it having to be an important defining aspect about themselves?

yep, which is the case of 95% of white people in cinema. they usually aren't called out for being white, and they just go about their lives as characters without people needing to bring it up. Unless it's relevant to the story.

Ideally, this would happen for all races, including here.

At least children are honest about these things. Adults will pretend to be color blind while also still trying to apply their racial bias at the same time.

I wonder what the issue is outside of Halle Bailey being Black? Is she a terrible singer or something?

I feel like people are completely missing the point of the entire issue. It's about staying true to source material. If they made a Winnie the Pooh show, and instead of him being a yellow bear, they made him a brown bear. It's not the same anymore.

Ariel shouldn't be black anyway. If mermaids live deep in the ocean, they should have pale skin due to lack of sunlight.

I'm black myself, and i think this is a stupid decision. If it's not broke don't fix it.

White skin and scales make them visible to larger prey, that's an evolutionary dead end to wind up in. More likely is they would have skin matching their scales and so in Ariel's case, green. Also, no hair because that increases resistance when swimming. And wait, how do they sing just as well under the water as above?

No because she looked a certain way and now she doesnt.

Youre the one whos saying that people who want her to stay true to the original must hate black people.

If Halle Bailey played a completely new character or the role of an existing black character, those people you call racists would have had nothing to say. Its not about race, its about change.

Black people taking the lead role in movies is a good thing. Casting actors that dont look like the character they are playing as is a bad thing. That goes for other physical attributes too, not just race.

Imagine if Harry Potter, Superman or Luke Skywalker was player by a black actor?

If they acted well and didn't outright change the story to specifically make their race the focal point of the story, who the fuck cares.

People would care.

Only racist people

People only care when existing characters are changed

Mace Windu is loved by all. John Henry Irons and John Stewart are awesome without having to complete replace Superman or Hal Jordans identity. There is a difference between straight up replacing an existing character and making a new main character in the same universe.

And if the made changes to Windu in future installments I'd be fine with that so long as it doesn't't change the story.

That's the whole point. Ariel's race has no impact on the story whatsoever. The only thing its impacting is people's feelings. And its because she's black.

I said people mad because they chose a black girl. Not that anyone hates black people. I haven't even used the word racist.
