That sounds less like reparations and more like retroactively acknowledging their state marital status at a federal level. That just makes sense. This is as much a matter of state rights as it is an LGBTQ thing, so it should be fun to watch Republicans trip over themselves to be hypocrites.

That, and even if we are calling them reparations, it's the direct victims of this offense that would be receiving them and many of the same people in government that would be paying them back, so the usual anti-reparation rhetoric of "it wasn't my fault!" isn't really as applicable here and there isn't much room to object.

I'd be happy to agree to reparations to just about anyone for any reason, as long as Congress agrees to garnish 90% of their wage to pay into the necessary fund first before anyone else's taxes have to go to pay it.

Until then, I think they should kindly shut the fuck up about it, generally speaking.

Yes. It was fine to be used for a while and thats why it was included in LGBTQA2ZBBQ, and even Carlos Maza has it on his profile and calls himself it frequently, but as soon as Steven Crowder called Carlos Maza what he calls himself he flipped out and said Steven Crowder was harassing him by calling him the Q word. Strangely enough Carlos Maza still hasnt removed the Q word from his profile, but Im sure its just an oversight and hell get around to it eventually...

Why are Democrats shooting themselves in the foot so badly on this reparations stuff?

It's like they're trying to lose in the general election...

I wish someone would promise to raise taxes on the rich and capital gains and cut spending, to balance our bloated fucking budget. But that person would never be elected in either party b/c people are too dumb, selfish, and short-sighted.

Raising taxes on the rich just makes them hide their money better pay their workers less or raise the price of their products. Ive always been more a fan of everyone being taxed the same percentage. At least until we find a way to stop the rich from doing those things I just mentioned.

Republicans have been lowering taxes on the rich for 40 fucking years, and in that time span, wages have been stagnant.

Not buying this bs that actually taxing them at reasonable rates will someone hurt workers' wages.

And obviously you can't just raise the %, you also have to close the loopholes and fix the tax structure itself. We should be taxing companies, for example, based on where the sale was made / where the buyer resides, not let them set up a bogus HQ in Ireland and claim all their worldwide profits were made there.

Going into a higher tax bracket never costs you more money than you'd make post-taxes prior to going into said bracket. Each bracket is taxed at its respective %, and only amounts earned above that bracket get the higher %.
Now, income is taxed at a much higher rate than capital gains and the % jumps by like +10% or +15% at a level that's still solidly middle class level earnings, so in that sense, yes they're getting screwed. But they're not literally losing money.
I would be fine smoothing out the tax % increases so there's no huge jumps like that.

Well, if they hate not making much extra money for their hard work, they should really despise Trump:

https://www.reuters.com/article/us-usa-labor-overtime/trump-administration-moves-closer-to-undoing-overtime-pay-rule-idUSKBN1AA2DZ

The Trump administration on Tuesday pushed forward with its bid to undo an Obama administration rule to extend mandatory overtime pay to 4.2 million workers and said it was considering treating workers differently based on location and industry.

The rule would have doubled to $47,000 the maximum salary a worker can earn and still be eligible for mandatory overtime pay under federal wage law. A group of 21 states and business groups including the U.S. Chamber of Commerce challenged the rule in a lawsuit filed last year.

Plus, you know, his whole history previously of stiffing people he contracted out work to.

The issue with that is that somebody being taxed 25% of their income at $20,000/year has a vastly greater impact on their quality of life than somebody being taxed 25% of their income at $2,000,000/year. As fair as it might seem to just take the same percentage from everyone, when you consider what's left afterwards and what that means for the person's ability to live, that's very obviously not the case. As such, you get brackets that place more of the nation's tax burden on people who can better afford it. In theory, anyway. In practice, the rich can afford accountants and lawyers to find them loopholes to exploit and get out of paying that fair share, leaving a disproportionate amount of the burden on the middle class, but that's a problem with how exploitable the tax code is, not with the fundamental idea of tax brackets.

As I said, this sounds less like reparations in the usual sense and more like the refund equivalent of back-taxes. This isn't (or at least shouldn't be) a matter of saying "gay people everywhere deserve X dollars total so every gay person gets X/gays yay we're all happy now!", it's a matter of identifying gay couples who paid more in taxes than they would have if federal marriage law had kept up with that of certain states and refunding them that difference. It's a very clear, easily-calculated sum, to be paid out to specific individuals who should not have had to pay it in the first place. That's actually pretty straightforward, reasonable, and not nearly as emotionally-driven as most "these poor people deserve reparations!" platforms are.

Now, if it evolves into compensating gay couples who were living together common-law before gay marriage was legalized in their state? That's substantially more ambitious and less reasonable, to say nothing of how impractical it would be to have to validate every such claim. It's still a specific, calculable figure that would be paid to individuals based on what they are personally owed, rather than a sweeping "this population deserves $X," and there's an argument to be made that it would be the right thing to do, but it's a much less feasible suggestion. I don't think it should go that far.

I will say im cool with people below the poverty line getting a big tax break. Dont see much point in taking money from them to turn around and give money back to them in the form of welfare/food stamps etc.
