Wigs you've never actually seen what they did before

It was the first time in Mets history they led by at least 6 in the 9th and lost (800+ games)

It was also the first time in Nats history they've won a game trailing by at least 6 in the 9th (700+ games)

That wasn't just a choke, it was something special!

i thought the game where John Franco gave up the slam to Brian Jordan allowing the Braves to walk off in 2001 was a 7-run 9th inning deficit but looks like it was only 5. But it was a late September game with the Mets trying to get back into the playoff race, so still pretty similar.

edwin diaz though lmao. blew it again. Stat I saw yesterday (before this blown save but after the Tuesday game)

Among Mets with 10+ saves in a season, Diaz's 73 ERA+ trails only Frank Francisco (2012) for worst ever. His 5.65 ERA is the worst ever.

like wow.

On the first part, yeah, probably. I think he's still a good pitcher having a bad year. I don't like using the excuse of "he can't handle New York," but it's possible. More likely that it's a mechanical issue that he's struggling with. Hopefully a reset with the offseason, starting fresh next season (wherever that may be) will see him back to his old self. However, the Mets certainly cannot plan for him to come back and be a reliable closer for them next year.

What does that mean for his future with the Mets? I don't know. He's still cheap enough that you're not worried about the financial commitment (even by Mets standards), so you're not gonna just give up on him. His trade value has tanked, so it's probably not worth it to trade him. The bullpen as a whole needs to be addressed and improved anyway; Diaz's resurgence alone, if it happens, isn't enough. So what should happen is they keep Diaz while bringing in additional pieces, potentially someone who can close (though I don't expect them to spend big money on a top closer), and make Diaz earn his job back, not just be handed it.

I think I'm less hopeful about Familia, I think he's lost it. Wilson has been a nice piece, we've got another year on him. Brach has shown potential, we probably re-sign him (he grew up a Mets fan so he'd gladly return). If we do have to spend big on a new closer, it sucks that we've lost an advantage of having a cheap, elite closer in Diaz, but it is what it is. Hopefully Diaz bounces back next year, and I think he can, but you can't rely on it, and you can't keep sending him out there until he proves he can be reliable.

Yeah, part of the reason the Mets are in this bullpen mess has been their complete inability to develop relievers internally over the last few years. 2017 trading deadline we traded for all these young relievers, and not a single one has panned out (of course, part of that problem is the Mets getting back lower level talent because they refused to eat any money on the trades).

criticize the mets not trading wheeler at the deadline all you want. if they did all they'd get back is the next low level reliever + cash.

Relievers are so volatile anyway, most of the guys who had good years this year anyway won't be good next year. Stop buying high on relievers.

Also: The Mets activated Lowrie who said he's not 100%. Another case of the Mets only acting in the name of "looking good". Can't have the trade viewed as a complete bust- it doesn't matter that activating him puts him in long term injury danger and may be bad for the team . All that matters is the Wilpons get to look slightly better.

This is just utterly inexcusable from Callaway, probably the most unforgivable thing he's ever done outside of threatening a Mets media member. This guy has fucking destroyed any possible (false) hope the mets could've had this year.

He fucking IBB'd a .180 hitting catcher in the 7th inning , with the Mets trying to fight back from down 3, to load the bases to bring up BRYCE HARPER (pinch hitting, for the pitcher's spot), who of course, walked in a run.

how the hell can you be this bad at your job

this team just depresses me so much on a daily basis. Why can't we be allowed to have a sustainable decree of joy. I love this team so much and my heart is just goddamn broken all the time, it's so brutal, I really can't take it. This btw was right after they fought back to be down 7-6 and then give up a 2 run homer because the stake needs to be driven though the heart at the most painful moments and as much as possible

Still, back to the Mets, from a broad baseball fan point of view, 1-0 games are so much better than this garbage. Both are tense but the tension of a 1-0 game is much better than the tension of a 10-7 lots of offense every inning game. It feels cheap and manufactured and much less fun. Not every game should be 1-0 but those games are way more enjoyably tense

The unfortunate thing is that the Brewers are making an incredible push right now to get back into it. Winners of 5 straight, plus some losses by others in the running. Cubs are losing right now, we could be 1 game out of the wild card by the end of the day. At this point though, even if we somehow do squeak into the playoffs, there is no way we are going far.

As you said, our offense was already banged up before he went down.

Every team in the race for the second wild card spot is bad. Cubs included!

It just feels like every time a team has a chance to take it from them they bomb.

The Brewers are tied with them now though and are playing the Marlins so maybe they can buck that trend FOR YELICH.

I mean like the Cubs can still make it that's fine I just want someone to actually pass them for a day.

As an aside, I've felt like for a month and a half the first team out will inevitably be the Mets because they'll get right back to the cusp and then the Braves will rip the soul right out of them for a third time in a row.

It's the most Mets thing possible to take the series from the Dodgers in order to set that up later.
