Was driving to the cinema with my girlfriend we saw the asshole in front of us hit an animal and not even stop. Driving a really expensive car too. We immediately u-turned to check and managed to get back before anybody else hit it again.
Turned out to be a cat that is very likely a stray. He was still alive when we got there so we took him to the emergency clinic. Hard to evaluate how injured he was. No broken limbs but was bleeding from the mouth and had a hard time breathing. He was calm on my lap all the way there and then had enough fight to be feisty and hiss/try claw and escape when we got to the clinic so hopefully his injuries aren't too severe. Had to surrender him to the vet clinic and legally they aren't allowed to give any updates after surrender :( I offered to pay all assessment fees just to find out and then surrender and let them treat but unfortunately not an option. I really hope hes going to be treatable and ok. Him still having fight when I tried moving him off my lap gave me hope and the vet promised to treat him if possible rather than euthanize. They said they were doing xrays as i left and they weren't even supposed to tell me that much. But it infuriates me that people will A. Hit animals and B. Not even stop when they do. The car didn't even attempt to brake or anything and it was after a light so he could have easily avoided it with a little effort in my opinion. ... Copied to Clipboard!

I was taught in Driver's Ed that if anyone is remotely close to you and an animal gets into the road, be it a squirrel or a cat, you do not brake and risk getting rear-ended. You also do not swerve. You just keep going without accelerating and maybe adjust a little bit to try not to hit it.

While my brother was driving home for Thanksgiving a few years ago, some guy veered into his line like a foot in front of him while they were both on the freeway. My brother spun out and nearly died while the guy drove on his merry way. I think like 90% of people who'd make a mistake like that wouldn't stop, so yes we are pretty garbage.

ShatteredElysium posted...A. Hit animals I mean if you're doing like 50+ and it jumps out then I understand but most of the time it happens at low speeds where I live. This happened at a light and he hit the cat before he even crossed the intersection so he was still accelerating and absolutely could have avoided it. They absolutely had to know they did it. And bullshit, it's so heartless to just carry on. That could have been someone's pet. Menji posted... What are you supposed to do if you hit an animal though? Seems excessive for 911. You do what I did for him. You pull over to check on it and take it to the vet. I mean I had plans with my girlfriend, we were both all dressed up and it took time out of our schedule to do it. Plus my clothes got covered in blood but I wouldn't think twice about doing it. Like I get that people just drive on and don't think about it but it's just frustrating to think people would do that and leave a defenseless animal to an awful death. Most of the time it isn't going to be able to get out of the way and it's going to get hit again and die a horrible death. I don't think people are aware that you can take it to the vet and surrender the animal and they will treat it for free if possible. So the only extra effort you have to make is to take it to the vet which I guess depends on where you live as to how available one is ... Copied to Clipboard!

Wow you really went above and beyond. That is admirable. If the person really did know they hit it, or saw it beforehand, that's really bad, especially since they were at a stop. Hope it survives, you did all you could.
I've hit 2 animals without stopping, but I'm almost positive both were killed instantly, and they were definitely not pets. One of the times it was a busy road at high speeds so there was no sense in stopping - a smallish deer basically suicided in front of my large van. There was foliage right near the road and he suddenly shot out of it out of nowhere, I had no time to react. Also fuck deer anyway, they cause serious damage and can get people killed. The other time was a possum that I didn't see in time, at night, and ran over. I felt bad about it but I kept going because it wasn't gonna survive my tires going over it. --- Official Advokaiser advocate ... Copied to Clipboard!

I looked up Oregon's law and you are required to stop and try to contact the owners or the police here too. I do see recommendations to call 911 which was surprising to me... but good to know if something horrible like that happens.

If it's not true across the country then that is news to me. I'm not sure how the business side works but I think cost is usually covered by a rescue or just donations to the vet place. --- "Hope is allowed to be stupid, unwise, and naive." ~Sir Chris ... Copied to Clipboard!

Maniac64 posted...They treat it and if they can help it great. Then it will go to an adoption place or rescue. If not then it gets put down. They aren't legally obligated to do it but I'd imagine a lot of vets, especially owners of the clinics, got into the business because they loved animals / wanted to help them. Also when you surrender the animal, the vet clinic then takes ownership of it so its up to them which rescue it goes to or some do adoptions themselves. So they would know ahead of time whether it's going to a kill shelter or not. I know a lot around here are no kill shelters. The one I went to last night was pretty great. I had to have a long conversation with them to make sure that if i surrendered the animal to them they wouldn't just euthanize and they would actually treat him if possible and his injuries weren't too bad. I'd have likely paid for the care myself and taken ownership of the cat if that wasn't the case but I realize that's not going to be the norm. I think the clinics just genuinely want to help though. They aren't going to let an animal unnecessarily suffer if you turn up with one ... Copied to Clipboard!
