They treat it and if they can help it great. Then it will go to an adoption place or rescue. If not then it gets put down.

Do vets somehow get reimbursed? Are they legally forced to give treatment out of pocket to any animals brought in unclaimed? I'm not here to argue morality but from a business standpoint indont see how you could be forced to treat them out of pocket knowing full well when they go to a rescue theres a good chance they'll be put down anyways

They aren't legally obligated to do it but I'd imagine a lot of vets, especially owners of the clinics, got into the business because they loved animals / wanted to help them. Also when you surrender the animal, the vet clinic then takes ownership of it so its up to them which rescue it goes to or some do adoptions themselves. So they would know ahead of time whether it's going to a kill shelter or not. I know a lot around here are no kill shelters.

The one I went to last night was pretty great. I had to have a long conversation with them to make sure that if i surrendered the animal to them they wouldn't just euthanize and they would actually treat him if possible and his injuries weren't too bad. I'd have likely paid for the care myself and taken ownership of the cat if that wasn't the case but I realize that's not going to be the norm.

I think the clinics just genuinely want to help though. They aren't going to let an animal unnecessarily suffer if you turn up with one
