Not putting spoilers in first post.

Better than expected, though i went in with super low expectations. Not great and clearly inferior to the original but neat to see with a couple cool surprises.

Are the songs better with the visuals of it?

And how was Jaffar?

Songs were worse, visually and vocally. Aladdin can't really sing anywhere close to the animated movie and is probably the worst singer. I was disappointed in Jump. Many of the visuals were aiming for 1 to 1 conversions and look clearly out of place - especially A Whole New World because everything looks cartoony as hell.

Jasmine was a good singer though. Not as good as the original but that's not fair to compare her to. She did her part well, even with her new songs.

Jaffar was good. More compelling and interesting of a character than the original since he wasn't completely one dimensional.

Oh, I figured the songs wouldn't match the original, but I meant more than Friend Like Me and Prince Ali seemed kind of off with weirdness added in at some points, but was wondering if when you see what they are going for visually during the number if it seems like awkward.

Granted, it could be because they've changed those songs I've loved for my whole literal life that makes them feel off too.

Oh, Friend Like Me was the best song in the movie visually. It wasn't particularly awkward and was every bit the cartoony spectacle it ought to be. They had fun with it.

Prince Ali is toned down more but it comes off fine. The short version on YouTube misses some of the magical antics.

Okay, that's good to hear then, because I had faith that Will Smith could make it work if the visuals we're there.

But the cartoon being so vibrant and wild is why I thought this wouldn't be able to match unless they went all out with CGI zaniness, which I kind of wish they had just done. It's just going to always feel more dull in comparison otherwise.

It's a very, very different take but i like it a lot for entirely different reasons. Gilbert was the better one but this version is a parrot I'd love to have.

saw it, I really liked a lot of the visuals and outfits. Jafar looked great

but I still wish we were in the timeline where Mustafa Ali was Alladin and Jafar was Jinder Mahal

but yeah the music suffered. Arabian Nights was kind of butchered and it made me sad

Just saw it, I fucking LOVED it. It was different, especially the ending, but it's great. It's just a new telling of the same story, I'm not gonna 1:1 compare it. Jasmine's new song is amazing, and she was just....DISTRACTINGLY beautiful.

naomi scott's absolutely gorgeous and it feels like a meta thing for the movie to continuously go "hey there's more to this princess than just her looks."

like yeah, we know that, but goddamn she's stunning. can't fault aladdin for becoming completely stupid when he's trying to impress her.

I went into it with really low expectations but came out loving it. Not as good as the original, but it's unfair to compare. I thought Will Smith did a great job, and yeah - Naomi Scott as Jasmine is stunning. I enjoyed the extra backstory for Jafar too, even if the actor was a bit boring.

after sitting on it for a few days the main thing about jafar that i disliked was how forced the whole "i'm gonna marry your daughter!" bit went. there's no implications that he even liked her that way so it's just kind of random. even just a little bit of him lusting for her or trying to gain power through her would've worked. instead you're left with a random reason that doesn't make the most sense.

i did forget how good Carpet was though. i don't know what Disney did to make both a parrot and carpet such compelling characters in a live action movie but i'm okay with this. especially the parrot, i had to double check to see if somebody legit voice acted that because i was completely fooled into thinking it was an actual bird.

Pretty sure he was doing it just to assert his power, and also to stick it to the prior Sultan.

he was, it's just that marrying her just to punish the old sultan is weak.

i mean granted, jafar wasn't made to look like the brightest guy in the room when it came to titles (wife not meaning anything is alluded to early on so that could've backfired) or people ("I'm gonna marry the person who wasted my first wish through sheer force of will") so it totally makes sense for his character to do something that dumb. it just is lacking and felt like we were going through the motions on that. just a few lines of him clearly lusting after her or a few lines of him talking about how he's going to keep her caged in and silent would've worked to make him that much more of a villain.

an alternative i would've liked more is if she had come up with the idea first - if she willingly reduced herself to being just the most beautiful princess in the land in exchange for saving them. would've worked out to his ego too and would've foreshadowed the finale a bit too.

All of this, plus a couple of my own thoughts:

Loved this take on Iago, basically instead of trying to be Gottfried this version is a macaw that occasionally provides commentary and quips instead of holding full on conversations. Also loved the addition of Dahlia, and I appreciated that she wasn't added simply to be a love interest, but also a good friend, a voice of reason, and yes comic relief.

The movie did NOT completely blow its CGI budget on Friend Like Me as I suspected from that clip Smith posted, for whatever reason a lot of the effects were just missing from it. It was a serviceable adaptation to the original, and though the original version of both songs are better these were still fun to look at. The same could be said for the film as a whole. Does it need to exist? Nah, but I'm glad it does. I'd watch it again.

It's a good movie. It's hard to compare it to the original because there aren't a ton of things I'd say could improve my favorite film in the Disney canon. The one thing that really could was improving on Jafar with some sort of backstory, which they did actually touch upon and reference/make use of several times throughout the story. It gave a character that, while liked, honestly never really shows you any motive or character. Jafar is all style with very little substance. That isn't to say this film blew me away with his portrayal, and at times I felt it fell a little flat just because initially, I was impressed by the character and their changes to him a bit. However, ultimately I don't think he felt strong or powerful enough. That was the biggest flaw I could point out in the film though.

The songs were all pretty good. I enjoyed Smith's portrayal of Genie. He didn't attempt to mimic the original yet there was still plenty of good throwbacks anyway. I especially liked him taking the place of the Peddler though. His Arabian Nights was actually really, really good to me so I'm not sure why people are claiming they butchered it. They took the most liberties with it and I was impressed by it. As far as the other songs go, as I said I pretty much liked them all. I'm not sure what complaint anyone could have for Aladdin's voice here because in the original, I hate to break it to you, but the dude is not a singer. He doesn't have a powerful voice; he sounds like his character singing, which is the same thing this guy sounds like. In fact he sounds very similar to me, much more similar than Jasmine or Genie sound to their original voices. Jasmine is an improved upon character here, which is something I think they've struggled with for their live action adaptations so far. She was more interesting than Belle, whom Disney really just lifted from the original film and plopped down in a new one.

I'm glad we're on board the Iago love.
Good month for animals in movies. John Wick is about doggos, Aladdin about birbs.

One thing I loved about the Iago is related to the changes in Jafar: his similarities to Aladdin don't just extend to being thieves but their pets. Iago is his Abu, down to stealing things.

Watched it. Pretty awesome version of the story, actually. Not as good as the original, but still great in it's own right. Genie Smith was tons of fun.

Iago is like the driving part of this movie and like, nothing happens in it if he isn't stirring shit somehow.

While I think you are right that Jafar was a more in-depth character I think his actor struggled in comparisons. I didn't find him threatening at all. I acted the Aladdin actor and I'm not a music expert so I'll take your word for it. I had a struggle with a lot of Aladdin's better lines being given to Genie as oppose to where they were originally Aladdin's Itty-bitty living space. Some other small complaints, Genie not knowing Aladdin's name in Friend Like Me made it a little awkward in the song. No, "Mr. Aladdin Sir." If Prince Ali starts faster I think the new version is better than the original.

The comparisons to the original is the hard part I think the original was perfect and this was just good and that's probably to problem. If the original was in my mind I probably would have thought this was great.
