First off, they would have to corner it. That would be a difficult task anywhere, let alone on a boat where, as evidenced in the video, it would likely jump off anyway. If it didn't jump off, it could instead attack somebody. Even if they took a swing at it, they could just injure it and it could hop overboard anyway or hide on the boat and bleed internally in agony until it dies. They can't even necessarily guarantee that they would kill it. Removing it from the boat guaranteed the problem was removed. First off, they would have to corner it. That would be a difficult task anywhere, let alone on a boat where, as evidenced in the video, it would likely jump off anyway. Yeah, let's clobber the thing slowly over 5 minutes, breaking bones and destroying internal organs along the way. Let's watch as it's agonized screams fade away into painful wheezing. Way more merciful than simply pushing the creature into the water. Not to mention, if he misses with the oar, he risks an agitated rabid raccoon charging and attacking him. Or he misses and damages the boat somehow and he's either stranded or sinking. Swinging an oar wildly is possibly the dumbest thing he could have done in that situation. Especially since at the end of the day the fucking thing is an overgrown rat. What if he beats the thing unconscious, then gets bit or scratched tossing it overboard if it wakes up? Then he has to go through the rabies treatment.
