i agree, but i baby stepped myself. i thought "$700" isn't bad. and it has free shipping/free returns (now negated due to import duties). but then i paid $150 more for the GMT function (tells time in a 2nd timezone, via the orange hand) and now another $120 in import duties...and all of a sudden it's an almost 1k watch that i lose $120 on if i return it lol

no, they're not. they can be used as a status symbol...but that is not exclusively what it is. it's about craftsmanship. i can type out an essay about how/why rolex is worth the amount it is. a well made watch isn't something that's made for $25 cents by workers in sweatshops. some parts need to be hand made. it definitely needs to be hand checked and regulated. these things cost time and money (no, not 10k worth, but way more than you'd think).

it's the same reason why nice cars are more expensive...they are constructed in a way that makes them work differently/better than cheaper cars. they can be used as a status symbol since only those who have the money can afford them. but there's a reason they cost that much, and that isn't exclusively due to the brand name (unlike nike, etc)

some people just don't understand those reasons, but i do and i appreciate them.

just because you guys don't understand and appreciate the craftsmanship doesn't mean that it doesn't exist and that it is what is driving the cost

are you telling me it's not extremely reductive to boil something down to "being a tool for telling time" or "being a status symbol"? i'm not saying i dont understand where things come from, i'm saying that is too reductive. if i said "jewelry is a status symbol" that is also incorrect. the price is based off the cut, the purity, how rare the stones are, etc. the brand doesn't determine the price, there's a ton of factors involved. that level of detail and appreciation is what makes someone an enthusiast about the subject. and as i mentioned, life is all about understanding and appreciating details. there is not a single hobby anyone has that they don't appreciate and understand the details. so calling watches "nothing but a status symbol" is reductive and completely inaccurate

oh i'm not denying it's a luxury item...but you gotta spend money on something. it's something i enjoy and i've explained why, so it's worth it to me. and according to value per dollar, in the watch world this watch is very much worth it

Looked gf posted...

correct, i doubt anyone knows what a christopher ward is lol. that said, the brand has a great rep in the watch community and as mentioned the value per dollar is there. imo any more than this and you start to reach the law of diminishing returns

MabusIncarnate posted...

you really can't just assign a value and say that's how much you'd be willing to pay. that may be how much it's worth it to you...but that doesn't mean the objective worth isn't much much higher. it's like if you didn't like the looks of an astor martin and said "i'll pay $500 for it, no more". people would laugh you out of the room. between design, materials and construction, the watch alone costs way more to produce than your price. the guy who hand checks this watch probably makes $39.98 just for that task. the price isn't artificially assigned, there is purpose and reasoning behind it

TreyFlowers posted...

Yeah, good call. I have to use metallic straps, leather irritates my skin. Which is fine, because I usually wear black watches.

I've had my current one for nearly 3 years, my wife gave it to me as a birthday present on the night we got engaged. If it didn't have sentimental value I would've replaced it a while ago, but I love it still. I'll post a pic
