are you telling me it's not extremely reductive to boil something down to "being a tool for telling time" or "being a status symbol"? i'm not saying i dont understand where things come from, i'm saying that is too reductive. if i said "jewelry is a status symbol" that is also incorrect. the price is based off the cut, the purity, how rare the stones are, etc. the brand doesn't determine the price, there's a ton of factors involved. that level of detail and appreciation is what makes someone an enthusiast about the subject. and as i mentioned, life is all about understanding and appreciating details. there is not a single hobby anyone has that they don't appreciate and understand the details. so calling watches "nothing but a status symbol" is reductive and completely inaccurate
