All right, anime general. I need help deciding what to watch next after I finish Land of the Lustrous. I've narrowed it down to four choices:

1) Watch Princess Tutu, a classic show that I've had on my backlog for years but never got around to.
2) Watch Symphogear AXZ, the last season I need to watch to be fully caught up for when XV airs this Summer.
3) Watch the second half (episodes 25-48) of Suite Precure, since I watched the first half earlier this year and then put it on hold.
4) Re-watch Princess Principal with its English dub, which I enjoyed a lot subbed and has (from what I've heard) a great and very unique dub.

I dont really have an opinion since I haven't watched most of those. But I contribute a 1/3 vote to the first three options, since watching something new > watching something again with dubs.

Friday has actually been a dead day for me for the past two seasons, because I didn't watch any shows in those seasons that aired on Friday. Technically I could say Index 3, but I watched the dub and that came out on Wednesdays. Plus it wasn't very good anyways.

Before that though, I had a year straight where some of the best shows of the season for me aired on Friday.

Fall 2017 = Girls' Last Friday
Winter/Spring 2018 = Katana Friday
Summer 2018 = Harukana Friday (technically Starlight Friday too, since the fansubs were always released on Friday, but Revue Starlight aired in Japan on Thursday and HiDive release the official subtitled version on Saturday, so I'm not sure it counts)

Has anyone else felt that this season in particular is really weak in comparison to the last like... 2 years worth of seasons? A couple GREAT anime are airing, but I've gotten spoiled by having a lot of solid quality in a season versus just like, "Here's the 4 great anime this season, and the rest just... exists!"

I mean, let's be fair. The majority of anime is trash. Look at how much is out now and how much is legitimately high quality.

And there is nothing wrong with getting entertainment from trash. I watched Marchen Madchen to completion after all.

The reason I dont watch videos of youtubers involving anime or anime games is because 90% of them are man tools that at some point are guaranteed to say "Dohohoho what am I playing lolololol, omg lololol" or something stupid like that. I haven't watched the video so I'm not saying he does it, but the whole "Look how weird this is hahaha, I'm watching/playing this ironically to be funny!" meme needs to die out along with everyone that spreads it.

well, I think constantly calling many things trash (especially things you enjoyed!) is unnecessarily negative and I sorta wish that would stop too, that wasn''t really what I meant to be talking about. I guess I was going more for the term "trashy" than "trash"

you know, those people who watch something like oreimo and just can't shut up about how it's all incesty and creepy and hapan is weird and how does anyone even like this and etc but they watch the whole thing anyway and kinda seem to enjoy it? but then whenever they talk about it afterward they weren't watching it seriously and they don't really like it they just can't tear their eyes away from such a horrible spectacle of trashiness and it's all just ironic, and despite thinking it's actually a good entertaining show they'd absolutely never admit it

Yeah considering how many fucking animes seem to be churned out every season, it's difficult to say if even the most hardcore of anime fans have truly watched it all to have an opinion truly representative of the industry as a whole. Especially in the Americalands and beyond outside the confines of Japanopolis where we don't truly fully understand how anime is being marketed or produced, even though sure we have some degree of ideas on things like disgustingly low wages and hilariously outdated monetization strategies like blu-ray sales contributing to a majority of an anime's revenue during a period where services like Netflix has been prospering.

But when there are plenty of gems in almost every season if one really peers deep into it like unique shows like Thunderbolt Fantasy or an objective classic like Mob Psycho that is being less than heralded yet released season after season. Considering that, it sounds pretty wrong in general to say all animes suck, and anybody with half a brain will immediately respond to how wrong that sounds in general. That is to say, you want to talk about personal tastes, all one has to do is look at the sheer number of genres covered in a single season of anime when there are 4 freaking seasons of anime per year. When a lot of other forms of media like movies or games or western TV also go months and months of no true quality content or even an attempt at cover multiple genres, it doesn't sound fair for anime and its excessive churning out to be criticized whatsoever, while you don't really hear nearly as many people might claim "all video games are trash." At that point, who's really not making the effort here, the producers or the viewers?

There's also the subject of subjectivity that I think semi-applies here, where somebody can be like well it's just my opinion bro. Well those people are actually the worst, because in the grand scheme of things, subjectivity can be described as a "grey" as it is pretty commonly. And the world is also claimed to "not be black and white." Well which is it really? Because people like to talk as though those two statements imply each other when it's more like one disproves the other. Grey is a color that's composed of a mix of black and whites, which actually imply there is a black and a white in this world for a grey to exist. Opinions are actually made of a lot of objective points that can be quantified to see what shade of opinion you actually hold about a subject. Keeping that in mind and not flat out dismissing an anime for what it is is pretty valuable. Otherwise it's easy to lose enjoyment of something that's not particularly attributed to the media you are losing enjoyment of.

In any case blanket statements are actually pretty dismissive of objectivity, ironically, because it tries to willfully ignore the other blacks and whites that make up this supposed judgment of theirs. At that point it's just not even worth trying to convince them of otherwise, because they'll probably paint your probably very valid point just about the same way

I agree that this sort of viewpoint is a pain but it's mostly the external viewpoint. Like, the people already on the outside of the subculture. They don't really have any knowledge of or interest in anime and other adjacent media, so they mostly stay out of those circles, and while their dismissal of it does tend to be needlessly vicious it's also pretty easy to just set them aside and forget about them

the people I'm talking about are the ones who constantly trashtalk their own hobby and their own favourite stuff because they are completely incapable of actually being genuine and talking about what they like, instead taking this stupid detached position where they'll never be forced to back up or defend any of their tastes or statements because they're just doing all of it "ironically" anyway

Yeah not being genuine is a big problem also. I've found that as I grew, the more I was outwardly (but also reasonably and not totally in your face) passionate about a subject, the more people gravitated towards me. If I instead just bashed my own hobby and called it trash, not only would I feel innately bad about it, people would be like "oh" and move on with their lives. It's more interesting to be interesting

But what can you do really. The only way they'll see it the other way is if they give it an experimentation themselves. It's less effective if you make them just take being more confident in a hobby as a fact.

A while ago some CEmen was twitch streaming him playing Katawa Shoujo of all things. I dont usually watch streams, but in about 10 minutes I heard him say "omg, what am I playing lolol oh wow" no less than 5 times. I ripped on him randonly for awhile on CE afterward and he never seemed to understand why lol

It feels like an awkward nerd thing. Where they are too nervous to admit what they like so they try to laugh it off as doing it for laughs and bash it. But it comes off so awkwardly, both fans and haters are embarrassed by them. Quit being nervous about your damn hobbies people.

I think you can be conscious of the fact that what you are watching is objectively bad, even if you enjoy it.

Again, I watched all of Marchen Madchen. It is objectively bad. The animation is poor, the performances are just OK, and they literally did not finish the series in its original production time. It felt like it cut out a LOT of content, and it got worse as it moved on.

But if you enjoy something, then it's not purely objectively bad. There's a pretty apparent value in its multitude of shockingly distorted screenshots bringing about tons of discussion and laughter. It's also like how nobody would ever really put The Room at a worst movies of all time list, when 90% of RedLetterMedia's Best of the Worst have 3 featured movies that are just about worse than The Room in more aspects than not.

You can certainly point out things that are objectively bad in Marchen Madchen, namely probably the bland story and the massive dip in animation quality in the last few episodes, but then it's the sheer situation in which this sort of thing actually happening in real life where the act of watching this anime becomes worthwhile. We literally saw this being made fun of in Girlish Numbers, where some viewers might've thought, there's no way those kinds of disasters happen for real. But it did, and here it is.

In the entertainment industry, slapstick comedies have always been a thing. You don't ever say "oh, that man must be in pain, so this is a poor form of comedy," because the man being in pain IS the comedy. Much like how Marchen being a disaster is a form of entertainment, and it succeeds in what it set out to do, albeit unwittingly
