Well, a whole month later, I found one for you. https://myanimelist.net/anime/388/Capeta I found out about it because it was mentioned in a video by one of my favorite anime Youtubers, Misty Chronexia, where he talks about his 50 favorite anime of all time. Considering that this dude has literally seen over nine thousand anime (not even memeing, this dude is OCD completionist as fuck) a show being in his top 50 out of that many is a pretty big deal. The show seems to have a pretty good rating on MyAnimeList too. It's very close though, and I'll definitely have AXZ finished in time to watch XV as it airs. Articulating how fantastic this show was is kind of difficult...it doesn't really feel like any anime I've seen, contemporary to or proceeding it. --1976-77 --Shading like its the 80s --Diverse crew --Fantastic characterization --Amazing direction --Worldwide setting Maybe everyone's had a different experience but in mine, anime/manga/other stuff has the issue of the main character dominating the scene. Even First Gundam, which has fairly iconic heroes and villains, was ultimately kind of the Amuro Ray/Char Aznable show. So what makes Gaiking feel different is that from early on and continuing through the show, everyone had their own episodes. Fan Li the fighter from Hong Kong, for example, had an episode about his absent brother and another for his best friend; Yamagatake the sumo wrestler had one about his adopted father and another about his stable; Sakon the super genius had one about betraying the crew and another about a dire threat from space; and so on for all nine members. Even though Sanshiro, the main character, would usually end up defeating the monster of the week, I feel this format gave some great depth to the others. Besides the shading and characters, the actual episode direction was pretty fantastic. Sharp angles and pan + scan made for some really memorable shots. So in conclusion, Gaiking was much better than a Monster of the Week from '76 had any right or reason to be.
