ESPN screwed up when they spent 24 hours saying Georgia should have been in the playoff instead of OU

Because Notre Dame is clearly not a top 5 team

If we only score 14 tonight then they might as well just have Bama and Clemson play 12 times a year.

But yeah most teams in Clemson's position just kneel on the
ball there and go to halftime.

That was a drive fueled by knowing their opponent was a fraud and wanting to end it before halftime. They gave zero ****s about anything ND might do to then.

But game results have to matter.

If you don't believe results matter we may as well go back to the poll era of National Championships because otherwise literally what is the point of a playoff.

I'm not going to pretend that was a close game but listen to this argument. During 3/4 Clemson touchdowns occured while NDs best defensive back was not on the field. With Julian Love out Notre Dame is unable to rusher the passer because now Drue Tranquil now has to help Loves backup. This gives Trevor Lawrence more time and thus gives his guys more time to get open. All of Clemson's touchdowns were 20+ yards. Only one occured while Julian Love was on the field (and that was a run play).

With Julian Love in the game the Irish only gave up 10 points. I'm not saying they would have won the game but I am saying that the game would have been much much closer and naturally would have required the Notre Dame offense to move the ball more. While it is a justification it is just reading the stats.

I'd venture to say if not running out the clock with a lot of backups in the 4th quarter that they could have scored 2 more TDS that quarter easily. They were gashing with the run at that point.

Honestly this felt like the best case scenario. Murray felt like a poor man's DeShaun Watson in that he was doing enough to keep it respectable whereas Watson kept them in with a chance to win it.

Basically 45-34 is a much better game than I anticipated, 28-0 start not withstanding.

One of the reasons Clemson is so good is that they are deep everywhere (except QB. Chase Brice isn't near Trevor Lawrence).

Clemsons superior depth is a valid reason for their victory.

I think if Oklahoma doesn't get so gobsmacked and only go down say like 21-0 instead of 28-0 that this is a bit of a different game.

Also turn one or both of those red zone stops into TDs.

Alabama has looked super vulnerable their last two games and neither is good as Clemson.

if you had told me we lose 45-34 before the game and Murray has 400 total yards I would have been content that we showed our offense was pretty darn good and maybe we get a defense finally in the next few years

I'm not happy we got there after being down 28-0 but oh well

I mean total yardage was 528 to 471 and I'm pretty sure 30-40 of that was the final game sealing drive.

I just can't help but think he should have gone for the touchdown late in the second to cut it to 28-14. Really think that would have fired up the defense enough to get the stop and they could have scored out of the gate in the second half and you're in a full fledged shoot out.

This is the real problem with Notre Dame being independent. If they go undefeated they are going to get in whereas if they were at least forced to play a conference championship game, we would see where they stand. They basically play an ACC schedule but they got to dodge playing Clemson in the conference schedule and didn't have to play them in the championship match. Whereas Georgia got punished for effectively having to play their playoff game in the SEC championship game, if they could have dodged the title game like Notre Dame does then they would have been in the final four.

I mean Notre Dame's schedule wasn't even good. They beat Michigan but it was week 1 and we also saw Ohio State dismantle Michigan in a far more impressive manner. They beat Northwestern but again we saw Ohio State beat them way more convincingly. They struggled past Pittsburgh who both Clemson and UCF absolutely demolished. They struggled past Vanderbilt. They struggled past Ball State. They struggled past a terrible USC team. Their only really good win came against Syracuse and of course going undefeated is always going to look great year end.

Even as an Ohio State I'm not stupid enough to believe we could or should have made it in after that Purdue game and it's not fair on Alabama to put Georgia in after they just beat them on neutral field. Notre Dame were always going to get in but I always felt a rough defeat was the most likely outcome.

It will be interesting to see what UCF do today who I know have a weak schedule but going unbeaten 2 years running is still impressive. I don't think they beat Clemson or Alabama but they at least score a few TDs. I do think UCF beats Notre Dame though and I've thought that all year.

But yeah I get why Notre Dame get in but they really need to be forced into a 13th game. There should be an ACC clause where they play in that title game if undefeated or like they play the highest ranked non conference championship participant if they are unbeaten (which actually would have been Michigan this year. Hmmm.) . Of course I know this will never happen, Notre Dame would have to be left out for them to try do something about it.

Oh yeah, I know it won't happen until they get left out when undefeated which would basically require 4 unbeaten P5 teams. And at that point I think playoff expansion is more likely than Notre Dame actually doing something about it.

Maybe they actually use this year as a reason to be skeptical of them in future but I highly doubt it.

If the ACC adopts a Big 12 style title game (which they should after lol Pitt in this years title game) then Notre Dame should be eligible for it.

Also I wouldn't call Notre Dames schedule weak by any stretch.

Let's compare their opponents to Georgia's

ND has a mix and matched Big 10/ACC/PAC 12 conference of:

Syracuse*
Pitt*
Wake Forest*
Florida State
Northwestern*
Michigan*
Stanford*
USC
Virginia Tech*

with at larges:
Vanderbilt*
Ball State (mid-major)
Navy (mid-major ind.)

Only two real cupcakes even on the schedule and neither is FCS and only 4 non bowl eligible opponents. Some of whom traditionally are pretty good like Navy, USC and Florida State.

Here's Georgia:
Austin Pea (FCS)
Georgia Tech*
Middle Tenn(mid major) *
UMass (FCS)

South Carolina*
LSU(L) *
Florida*
Kentucky*
Vanderbilt*
Tennessee
Missouri*
Auburn*

Alabama(L)*

The only way that doesnt look decently even to me is if you truly believe the SEC is THAT MUCH better than the other conferences and the fact that Ball State/Navy are better weakest schedule stops than Austin Peay and UMass.
