initial thoughts

assuming mostly same rules as current contest. Characters can be from outside sources but not primarily known for outside sources (ie most comic characters)

Darth Vader
Yoda
James Bond
Captain Jack Sparrow
Indiana Jones
Gandalf
Harry Potter (or maybe Dumbledore?)
Rocky Balboa
Woody

maybe replace Indy with another Disney character like Aladdin or Stitch

I don't think Jack Sparrow would be shit anymore

replace Woody with Buzz IMO

also not sure about Rocky. Maybe. I dunno.

Would Alien or Predator do well? What about the Terminator? Any horror guys?

I'd argue Harry Potter has the same status as like Lord of the Rings and Game of Thrones, where it's known pretty equally for both the books and the films/show

Yeah, I feel like Woody is a kind of strange choice for a Disney/Pixar representative. I also have my doubts that Yoda would even be the second-strongest Star Wars character (Vader probably is the strongest.)

I'm not sure if Harry Potter even qualifies by your rules. Yes, there was a film series, but the original book series probably has a really high readership rate. I consider him a Literature character, not a Film character. (Bond, on the other hand, I consider a film character despite also originating in literature.)

I do agree that Vader, Bond, and Indy unequivocally belong. Gandalf too if he's counted as "film" (which sounds disturbingly reasonable in spite of how LotR is the progenitor of most fantasy novels).

Oh, yes, that's a good point. Jason Voorhees is a definite possibility.

My best guess, considering only film-originating characters:

Darth Vader
Han Solo (Solo bombing isn't going to impact him that much)
Yoda, I guess
Indiana Jones
Godzilla
Scar
Neo
T-800
John McClane

Something like that, though only Darth Vader would likely measure up to even low-end noble niners in strength.

Who would you pick? I definitely think Woody is the most iconic Pixar character

Mickey's the most iconic Disney character overall but he's not so much a film character as he is an animated short character. I'd put Stitch, Aladdin and maybe Simba as top Disney characters too. Maybe even Jack Skellington?

For horror reps I think Myers > Jason personally.

For me I think it might look something like this:

Darth Vader
Ellen Ripley
Han Solo
Indiana Jones
James Bond
Jack Sparrow
Gandalf
Terminator
Harry Potter

Possible dark horses:
The Bride
Obi-Wan Kenobi
Tyler Durden
Andy Dufresne
Neo
Michael Myers
Jason Voorhees
Godzilla
Hannibal Lecter

Ellen Ripley or Sarah Conner for the one female character?
V (outside shot, but the mask alone is potentially iconic enough to get votes)

He probably is the most iconic Pixar. But I feel like the big four of the Disney Renaissance are the strongest Disney/Pixar movies. I'm not sure which of their characters would be able to contend, though...

I've noticed that we keep gravitating towards villains. Not exclusively, but we all seemed to agree that Vader is the strongest Star Wars character, and most of the Disney movies also seem to be villain-driven.

Do we consider the Winnie-the-Pooh characters "film" or "animated short"? Tigger seems like he'd be strong. (I have to ask because I consider them "literature", but I know that they're more well-known for the Disney adaptation than for the original books.)

I'd rather see a literature battle. That being said GoT, LotR, HP, Marvel, DC would all be massively warped by their representation in other media. GoT especially would draw votes from people that have never read the books. Such is life.

Assuming you don't count Pokemon characters or similar examples, then yeah, DBZ would have most of the top manga/anime characters for sure.

Think gamefaqs is too old for Naruto to be worth much. First episode didn't air on U.S. television until 2005, by which point the average gamefaqs user as of last year's age poll was 17. And I don't think much of the site are hardcore enough fans that you can expect them to have watched one particular show as an adult for hundreds of episodes, no matter how popular.

I'd figure Sailor Moon, Yami Yugi, or Spike Spiegel would be the contenders for top non-DBZ anime characters? They could all potentially flop hard too; depends on what this site would value in a non-gaming medium over a dozen years since most have been seriously into any of their franchises. Also how widely watched Cowboy Bebop is here; the former two would at least have nigh-universal recognizability. Sailor Moon's probably closer to the nostalgic sweet spot for the site's demographics but I'm not sure she'd go over that well on a ~90% male site.

Assuming this noble 9 was formed in 2002 like the gaming noble 9, Ash absolutely would not be there. That's the year Pikachu only got 54.41% on PaRappa of all people

Lelouch/Zero and Edward Elric would likely be elite tier at least (I'm assuming the latter is beloved within the FMA fandom; I've never watched either series, but its popularity is obvious). I can also see Alucard (Hellsing) being around the level of Mr. Plan. There'd doubtless be a slice of life character or two up there as well like Haruhi.

Kirito would be a hilarious wildcard. Recognizability vs. mass anti-votes.
