Yes. I also think less known channels tend to put in the most work as they need to prove themselves. Of course some of the very successful ones often require a lot of work to stay successful too.

The lighting is on point not using a lens light, actions are done with good respect for the lens as eye height to give convincing perspective, the delivery is clean so no obvious script reading, no jump cuts, solid array of props, well overlaid sound unlike most who abuse the mic making everything in to jarring scratching and no green screen.

I have thought about supporting a Patreon before, but I see a number of fanficcers on there using it to take commissions for their works, and I do not agree with that (because fanfic is not supposed to be done for profit, and that used to be Rule No. 1 of the craft).

I'm skeptical of how much a lot of the people (specifically YouTubers) who have a Patreon actually need it vs. just using it as a tool for supplemental income. Obviously they have a right to privacy on their income but there is a total lack of transparency. They can just complain that YouTube is fucking them over and people will eat it up because they're desperate to kiss ass, or don't know any better since they don't run a channel of their own and YouTube is inconsistent enforcing stuff anyway.

I mean fucking JonTron never uploads videos, lives in NYC, has a huge crew that presumably is getting paid when he actually does make a video, and has publicly said things that would make sponsors uncomfortable, but he seems to be doing fine. At the very least I'd imagine most of these YouTubers have banked a large amount of money, and maybe they don't have what would be a sustainable income anymore, but that isn't really a huge issue when you have a million saved up.

Have you not heard of a dream job? It doesn't matter how much you enjoy doing something, all that matters is that somebody else has something to gain from it. As it happens, people want the output and google wants to skim your attention. You deserve pay for what you supply others, your personal loss is merely what pushes up your minimum ROI.

anyway yeah i pledge to a few artists, i've actually gotten a couple of commissioned art pieces out of it. nothing wrong with supporting people who make stuff you like. i dunno if i'd pledge to a large-scale youtuber though, not because i think they don't need it or shouldn't have it but my five bucks is a lot more noticed by a smaller artist than by someone who already makes $100k a year

You could also think of it as selling a service. Like a play. People pay to go see plays. Or people pay to watch/listen/or whatever for someone who has a Patreon. Those are pretty similar. Watching a person/people perform. Why is paying for a service so bad?

Well not to mention this is a voluntary pay system, if I want to go see someone in concert I have to pay a good deal of cash to get a ticket and if that is a very popular band I may need to buy it from a scalper for an even more exorbitant price.

Meanwhile most Patreon people do their thing whether or not you pay for them on Patreon. So it's more like seeing a guy playing a musical instrument and throwing a buck in his hat or something. You don't have to give them a dime even if you vastly enjoy their content on Youtube or whatever they do.

It is funny those that claim they have no talent and anyone can do it, sure you could make the same claim about a musician signing I mean any moron can get up on stage and try to sing Don't Stop Believing but a damn good singer will make that song far more enjoyable. This type of claim reminds me of how things probably worked when saw our first novelists and how people would claim "Any moron can write some book, what a joke of a profession".
