No, there's nothing more annoying on YouTube than people who complain about how much money they make (whether that's some rambling video on "the algorithm" or making a Patreon). I'm sure these people have some legitimate gripes about how YouTube treats them but they act like their "talent" is some gift to the world and they couldn't possibly work an ordinary day job. I couldn't possibly give the slightest shit about the financial sustainability of someone who makes the same mediocre content as a hundred other people, or if that stream of content ends. I don't even whitelist ones I like on adblock. Just because they made it so YouTube can be a career doesn't mean it should be.

No, I think it's only like $10 a month. It's just one of those things I think about, then forget about repeatedly.

Yeah I know, but YouTube is a predominant example. I know people do it on Twitch too, but that's like an even narrower talent niche than YT. Do people really get that excited over somebody talking over playing a video game that they'd pay extra money to keep it going? I'm not saying I can't enjoy that kind of thing myself too, but I find it wholly disposable with so many superior entertainment options around.

Or wait, maybe Twitch people don't do it since you already pay for subs and can tip or whatever, but same principle pretty much.

Way to miss the point. I didn't say this stuff couldn't be entertaining, it's just not entertaining enough that I care that much about it. The vast majority of the type of content that would be supported by Patreons isn't exactly cinematic masterpieces. I bet most of these people could pump out these videos if they had a day job, but they just don't want to.

Uh isn't Patreon basically just Kickstarter but whatever you commit is paid on a monthly basis instead of one time? And thus whoever you are paying is in turn expected to deliver [whatever] on a regular basis. Sure sounds to me like a thing that YouTubers would use to stay afloat (that and literally seeing YouTubers with Patreons)

I definitely understand why the gun channels on YouTube turned to patreon. True, gun reviews aren't exactly riveting content, but they're expensive to do. Ammo ain't cheap.

I think its a little different than Kickstarter. But you are right about it being a monthly thing. And based on the price, of multiple prices are available, you do get different things for it.

But I can understand not wanting to pay a patreon. But I can also understanding paying one, as well. It depends on what youre getting. I dont think its wrong for some people to turn for it when they need help with stuff. This podcast I listen to started one most because they needed to get equipment and being able to rent a room. Especially after splitting into multiple groups because of a move (they still work together, but have multiple groups in different areas). They were mainly borrowing equipment from their jobs and trying to find a studio when they could. Haha. They all still have other jobs, though.

For some, its worth it. They may get something they want. For others, its not. I wouldnt pay to get episodes early. But maybe somebody else would. Some like behind the scene content. Some allow you to be part of a group. Or play games with them. It just dopends on what they offer and what you want, I guess...

No I don't believe in giving money to people who don't earn it.
Talking on a mic for an hour a day / week does not deserve anyone's money. It is something that anyone can do, it just requires a free hour of time and something to talk about.

I'd disagree with this, most people can't do it, or at least can't do it well. The problem is that it's not a true meritocracy, and it really couldn't be since entertainment is subjective, but regardless a lot of it is just getting lucky and hitting all the marks on how to market/expand your brand. For me it's less that anybody can do it, but that no one person does it so well that they're irreplaceable.

I get that, it's more of a generosity thing than actually getting a good entertainment value, but I don't really like it. I see a lot of this gross mentality where people act like content creators are their personal friends, and I think this kind of thing feeds into it (not that I'm saying every donor is like that).

Yes I have. One was Creston Spiers, the guitarist for the metal band Harvey Milk, who has since disbanded. I was stoked on the new music for a while, but then I got tired of his conspiracy theory BS. I also have one that a friend does, that has generally been about her photography/art/mental health. Not sure how much longer I will subscribe, as I do need to take care of myself too!

The only other one I would consider donating to currently is 8-bit music theory. That guy puts out amazing music theory content on youtube, and puts up scores/sheet music that he notates on his patreon. I think that's a lot of serious work, and I'd gladly pay for the products.

You've got to parse through whether or not your money is going to a worthy cause. There definitely are a lot of already wealthy people claiming to be working towards some sort of goal on patreon, when they're apparently just supplementing their income.

Sure I can agree with this, but I would say that there are people that can do it, they just don't want to do it. Take one of my favorite Youtubers, Buildzoid:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T9fypwMCmug" data-time="

He basically does three types of videos, PCB reviews, rambles and overclocking livestreams. I would love to do something like this as a hobby but the monetary / space investment is quite high. Back when I was more active in the community I've had multiple people (including Gigabyte's Marketing) if they wanted me to do reviews or receive free product to help users out. I had to decline as I don't have the storage to support it.

Ad revenue and sponsors could probably cover that. However if people want to throw money at her then she obviously isn't going to say no. Nobody would.

Edit: After a quick google search I see she's also a attractive Asian chick. That's automatic money making right there. For reference:
