I hate this.

It needs to stop.

The gaming industry needs to get its shit together.

The only mobile game that I can think of (off the top of my head) is Ys Seven for the original PSP. It was probably the best handheld game I've ever played. Not only because it was fucking amazing....but also because it was one of the few handheld games that allowed you to literally save at anytime, anywhere, and the saving process took less than 3 seconds. It was just like: press start, go down to save, press x.....bam. Move the fuck on with your life. Catch the bus. Eat dinner. Hide your PSP under your desk before your teacher/boss/darklord sees.

But most other handheld games I've played require you to actually take your character to a physical save station of some kind in order to actually save.

And handheld games are more and more often designed as though they are console games....with long cutscenes, extensive dialogue, deep dungeons, puzzles, lengthy boss battles, etc........and you might only have a few opportunities to save. So playing on the go can become a nightmare.....because if you need to turn it off for any reason, you risk losing progress. A lot of progress.

Also, wtf is a darklord? Do you have a darklord in your life?

Uh... I dont think all games are like that. Just because most of the games you play require you to save at save points doesnt mean all of them do. Also, handheld have built in sleep mode for this problem. For the DS/3DS, you literally just close the system. For the PSP, you just move the power button up for like a second.

Most handheld games also have a quick save function that can be accessed at anytime on top of the handhelds having sleep mode, this topic is still really bad

I feel like this topic would have been much more relevant ~15 years ago, before the DS normalized sleep modes in handheld games. Forcing long gaps between saves still sucks, regardless of the platform, but it's not like the pre-DS days when your only options were turning it off (and losing your progress) or leaving it on and hoping the battery lasted until you got back and reached the next save point.

Yes, many handheld games did offer workarounds for those limitations, so even then it was only the occasional poorly-designed game that had a problem. It's just even less of a problem now that sleep modes exist.

As said, there have been games since the GBA that offer work arounds. Quick save (save. Turn off. Load that save and it erases itself upon loading).

And since the 3DS all handhelds have had a sleep mode either closing the system or hitting the power button briefly.

No it isn't. If I can literally save every two seconds I can just re load every time I get hit so I got full health when I get to the boss. Then I can in turn save after every hit I land on the boss so if I do lose I can load up my save and not have to fight the whole fight again.

It kills the challenge of certain games.

Some games you'll never hear me claim I beat them even though I did because I know I abused save states to accomplish it.

I miss my flip phone!!! It was the best conversation starter! People always teased me, or assumed I was a drug dealer. Had a flip for 10 years. Finally had to upgrade last summer because work related group texts with multimedia messages and emojis wouldn't display and caused my phone to get really hot and display jibberish. Now I have a cheap ass $30 smart phone. I hate it.

The one I had before it was my mother's old one, and it stopped working (a little rubber pad near the microphone degraded and plugged up the hole, meaning I couldn't make calls on it) at the ripe old age of 13. My current one still works, so I still use it.

They truly are superior. Don't have to worry about cracked screens. They hold a charge for like a solid week! And texting was easier. I was like a machine sending Morse code with that sucker. And since you get that satisfying click with each number, you could text in the dark from memory of what characters each click would give you.
