The issue isn't the season accrual for 4 year purposes. The issue is that if he doesn't report the Steelers can franchise him again next season for the same cost as this season (or transition tag). If he reports then if they tried franchising again, the cost ramps up.

I thought the issue all along was that bell needed to play a certain amount of games in order to become eligible for FA next year. This reads like he can just sit out the whole year and the steelers can't do **** to him and he can leave anyway.

I've heard this "Bell doesn't have to report to get the accrued season" line for a few weeks now. My understanding (which is largely based on secondhand info from people not versed in contract law) is that it seems to be a grey area in the CBA that would wind up in court, but if it does Bell stands a decent chance of winning just because of a tendency for judges/arbitrators to side with the individuals in contract disputes.

He's already played well over 4 years

Drafted in 2013. So he has played:

2013/14 - Rookie contract
2014/15 - Rookie contract
2015/16 - Rookie contract
2016/17 - Rookie contract
2017/18 - Franchise Tag
2018/19 - Franchise Tag

So he's been eligible for UFA for 2 seasons but the Steelers have franchise tagged him both years. He can't turn down the franchise tag to become a FA. Technically he can report this week and the Steelers can still tag him a third team. However the third tag is 144% of the previous years tag OR an average of the top 5 salaries at the highest paid position (I.e. QB)

So the reason it's important he gets the season accrual is because with this years accrual it would cost Steelers Top 5 QB money to tag him again effectively ruling out that posibility. If he doesn't get this years accrual then he gets the same offer as this year (14.5m I believe)

He could fight the accrual in court like Reg says but I'd imagine at that point Steelers would be petty enough to drag it out and force him to lose another year anyway

Also for the record, the last person to fight the season accrual in court lost. Granted it was due to drug suspension (Josh Gordon)

I have had a shitty time with defenses this season. I think that I have had one game with 10+ points (standard Yahoo scoring I think), and the highest output that I have had in the past three or four weeks is like two points. I decided to drop the Dolphins D this week and they put up 30. I just can't win.

Things could still work out this week as I have the Cowboys D, but if I had the Dolphins D, then I could have had a 15 point lead tonight with my Zeke against Para's Henry.

My strategy with defenses is to look at the available options, find the one with highest projected points for the week, and pick it up. I got Miami this week, Washington last week, and the Bengals a few weeks ago when they also put up 20+.

Too bad that the rest of my teams are so bad that it often doesn't make a difference.

I mean I call it a strategy but it's more, "I have no other choice here because I didn't draft a defense".

I mean as long as you look a little below the surface.

Like obviously you have to be aware of key injuries and whatnot. But generally.

Generally the options are "1-2 potentially decent picks" or "bad team going against top 10 offense", so my choice is generally made for me.

Of the 16 available defenses this week, 12 of them were either on bye or got less than 3 points, and the only one of that bunch that was projected to do well was Oakland.
